    Learning t say“yes, and”
When I first heard abut the imprvisatin (即兴交流) class, I was hesitating. As a quiet and shy girl, I feared imprvising in frnt f strangers. Hwever, I knew I wanted t wrk as a science cmmunicatr after finishing my Ph. D., s it seemed like a perfect pprtunity t learn hw t speak and cmmunicate with thers effectively. I signed up, knwing the experience wuld give me help.
During ur first class, we learned an imprtant cncept f imprvisatin:“yes, and.” It means that, as imprvisers, we'd better accept what fellw perfrmers say. If smene says that rhins(犀牛) are librarians, fr example, then rhins are librarians. We d nt questin the lgic; we say“yes” and then cntinue with the scene as if nthing is wrng.
The first few scenes were hard, but as weeks turned int mnths, I became mre cmfrtable and even started t enjy ur classes. I became better at listening, relating t my cnversatin partners, and cmmunicating clearly in the mment. Once when I was giving a presentatin abut my science, an audience member surprised me with a questin that didn't grw ut f the infrmatin I'd presented. Instead f getting cnfused and nervus,I tk the“yes, and” apprach— accepting the questin and letting my mind fcus n why it was asked. That helped me find an apprpriate answer. I gt pretty excited abut it.
The benefits f imprvisatin g beynd cmmunicatin. Befre attending the class, I wuld get stuck when my experiments prduced unexpected data, thinking that I had made a mistake. But nw, instead f getting discuraged, I will stay pen t the pssibility that the results are real, keep explring the data and end up identifying a new type f cell— ne that isn't behaving as expected.
I think all scientists can benefit frm this lessn. If the data say rhins are librarians, then it's wrth finding ut whether rhins are, in fact, librarians. As scientists, ur jb isn't t challenge data that supprt a precnceived (先入为主的) stry, but t say“yes, and.”
    24. Why did the authr attend the imprvisatin class?
    A. T get a different experience.

Many peple believe that wrking t the maximum is the secret t success, but research has fund that mderatin als gets results n the jb.
In a study led by Ellen Langer f Harvard University, researchers asked peple t translate sentences int a new made-up language. Subjects wh practiced the language mderately befrehand made fewer errrs than thse wh practiced extensively r nt at all. High levels f knwledge can make peple t attached t traditinal ways f viewing prblems acrss fields— the arts, sciences, and plitics. High cnscientiusness is related t lwer jb perfrmance, especially in simple jbs where it desn't pay t be a perfectinist.
Hw lng we stay n the clck and hw we spend that time are under careful examinatin in many wrkplaces. The yung banker wh eats lunch at his desk is prbably seen as a g-getter, while his clleagues wh chat ver a relaxed cnference-rm meal get dirty lks frm the crner ffice. “Peple frm cultures that value relatinships mre than urs des are shcked by the thught f eating alne in frnt f a cmputer,” says Art Markman, a prfessr f psychlgy at the university f Texas, Austin. Scial interactin has been shwn t lift md and get peple thinking in new directins and in ways that culd help imprve any pst-lunch effrt.
Markman als prmtes ff-task time. “Part f being a gd thinker is experiencing things that are seemingly unrelated t what yu are wrking n at the mment but give yu fresh ideas abut yur wrk,” he says. “Als, there is a lt f research shwing that a psitive md leads t higher levels f prductivity and creativity. S, when peple d things t increase their life satisfactin, they als make themselves mre effective at wrk.”
    28. What des Ellen Langer's study shw?
    A. Simpler jbs require greater cautin.

    C. Mderate effrt prduces the best result.

    B. Fcusing n what yu d raises prductivity.
    C. A cheerful md helps make a creative mind.
    D. A gd thinker is able t inspire ther peple.
    30. What des the text seem t advcate?

    B. Balance between wrk and family.
    C. Lng-standing cultural traditins.
    D. Harmny in the wrk envirnment.
    D
The latest research suggests a mre prsaic (平淡的), demcratic, even puritanical (清教徒式的) view f the wrld. The key factr separating geniuses frm the merely accmplished is nt a divine spark. It's nt I. Q., a generally bad predictr f success, even in realms like chess. Instead, it's deliberate practice. Tp perfrmers spend mre hurs( many mre hurs) rigrusly practicing their craft. If yu wanted t picture hw a typical genius might develp, yu’ d take a girl wh pssessed a slightly abve average verbal ability. It wuldn't have t be a big talent, just enugh s that she might gain sme sense f distinctin. Then yu wuld want her t meet, say, a nvelist, wh cincidentally shared sme similar bigraphical traits. Maybe the writer was frm the same twn, had the same ethnic backgrund, r, shared the same birthday.
This cntact wuld give the girl a visin f her future self. It wuld give her sme idea f a fascinating circle she might smeday jin. It wuld als help if ne f her parents died when she was 12, giving her a strng sense f insecurity and fueling a desperate need fr success. Armed with this ambitin, she wuld read nvels and life stries f writers withut end. This wuld give her a primary knwledge f her field. She’ d be able t see new writing in deeper ways and quickly perceive its inner wrkings.
Then she wuld practice writing. Her practice wuld be slw, painstaking and errr-fcused. By practicing in this way, she delays the autmatizing prcess. Her mind wants t turn cnscius, newly learned skills int uncnscius, autmatically perfrmed skills. By practicing slwly, by breaking skills dwn int tiny parts and repeating, she frces the brain t internalize a better pattern f perfrmance. Then she wuld find an adviser wh wuld prvide a cnstant stream f feedback, viewing her perfrmance frm the utside, crrecting the smallest errrs, pushing her t take n tugher challenges. By nw she is reding prblems— hw d I get characters int a rm— dzens and dzens f times. She is establishing habits f thught she can call upn in rder t understand r slve future prblems.
The primary trait she pssesses is nt sme mysterius genius. It's the ability t develp a purpseful, labrius and bring practice rutine. The latest research takes sme f the magic ut f great achievement. But it underlines a fact that is ften neglected. Public discussin is affected by genetics and what we' re“hard-wired” t d. And it's true that genes play a rle in ur capabilities. But the brain is als very plastic. We cnstruct urselves thrugh behavir.
    31. The passage mainly deals with .
    A. the functin f I. Q. in cultivating a writer
    B. the relatinship between genius and success
    C. the decisive factr in making a genius
    D. the way f gaining sme sense f distinctin32. By reading nvels and writers' stries, the girl culd .
A.cme t understand the inner structure f writing
    B. jin a fascinating circle f writers smeday
    C. share with a nvelist her likes and dislikes
    D. learn frm the living examples t establish a sense f security
    33. In the girl's lng painstaking training prcess, .
    A. her adviser frms a primary challenging frce t her success
    B. her writing turns int an autmatic pattern f perfrmance
    C. she acquires the magic f sme great achievements
    D. she cmes t realize she is“hard-wired” t write
    34. What can be cncluded frm the passage?
    A. A fuelling ambitin plays a leading rle in ne's success.
    B. A respnsible adviser is mre imprtant than the knwledge f writing.
    C. As t the grwth f a genius,I. Q. desn't matter, but just his/ her effrts.
    D. What really matters is what yu d rather than wh yu are.

“I can't” might actually mean“I dn't want t,”“I'm afraid,”“I'm cnfused,” r even“I dn’ t knw hw.” And after parsing ut(解析) hidden meanings fr the hundredth time,I can understand why my childhd gymnastics cach had put a gym-wide ban n the phrase.
Anyne wh used it, even the ther caches, had t d 50 push-ups befre trying cnversatin again. It wasn't that he wanted peple t d things beynd their skill r safety level. The plicy was against the wrds themselves. He felt they were a shield (保护盾) t hide behind instead f admitting mre useful and actinable hesitatins. “I'm afraid.”“I' ve never dne it by myself.”“I need t rest a few minutes befre I try.”“I'm embarrassed t try in frnt f ther peple.”“I dn't want t, because...”.

Fr me, “I can’ t” actually meant“It's s embarrassing t run and be laps behind my peers,” and“I wuld rather shield my eg frm the hit by intentinally walking the whle thing.” My heart still starts t race just thinking f the number f times my self-preserving.“I can't” was met with a dismissive“Of curse, yu can.”
But letting urselves fall back n the“I can’ t” can d mre damage than just hiding ur deeper feelings. Eventually we, and the peple arund us, start t believe it. I knw there are things I have stpped trying because f that. S, why try? The number f laps I have avided with well-timed bathrm breaks is surprisingly large. I can't g back and tell my childhd self that the mile run wasn't wrth the anticipatry anxiety. But I can remember hw badly I wished even ne classmate had acknwledged that I had barely missed the schl recrd in sit-and-reach instead f teasing me abut laps the next day. I can remember that“I can't” can s ften mean smething else. And I can take the time t try t ask the right questins, s that I can say smething mre useful in respnse than“Of curse yu can.”
    40. What were peple suppsed t d if they said“I can't” in my childhd gymnastics?
    41. What did“I can't” actually mean when I said that in the gym-class mile run?

    第二节
    Dear Chris,
I'm Li Hua frm Class [X]. I'm writing t talk abut the randm gruping fr after-class ral practice. The prblem is that students have different English levels and persnalities. Randm gruping might lead t situatins where ne student dminates the cnversatin and the ther has few chances t speak, r where students with similar weaknesses can't help each ther imprve effectively.
I suggest gruping students based n their English levels and persnalities. This way, students can better match each ther and learn frm each ther mre efficiently. Als, we culd change the grups regularly t let students experience different partners.
    Thank yu fr yur attentin.
    Yurs,
    Li Hua
