“T repair ancient bks, we have a lt t d,” says Sng Jing, 34, wh has been wrking in the restratin divisin fr ancient bks at the Natinal Library f China in Beijing fr eight years. Befre starting a restratin prject, Sng and her clleagues have t evaluate the subject t cnsider what prblems can be slved thrugh restratin and thse that cannt. Fearing the chemicals in cmmercially prduced pastes (胶水) might harm the bks, they have t make the glues they need by themselves, starting frm remving starch (淀粉) frm flur.
“The restratin als requires high levels f cntrl in brushing the paper. If the pressure is nt prperly cntrlled during the brushing prcess, the paper may tear, but if the tuch is t light, the paper wn’t stick,” Sng explains.
Sng was determined t jin the field frm an early age. As a child, she was attracted by dcumentaries abut the wrld’s cultural relics and became deeply interested in the art f artifact restratin.

Calling all film lvers! This Freshers Week, cme ver t the Film Club stand and sign up fr a year f creative fun!
The Film Club has been running n campus fr ten years, and jining it is a fantastic way t enjy the wrld f films! We take mnthly trips t watch the latest films and meet every week t discuss what we like. But we dn’t limit urselves t just talking abut films—we make them t! Funded by the Natinal Film Sciety, we have all srts f equipment t make high-quality mvies. We have a great selectin f cameras, lights and sund equipment. Never made a film befre? That desn’t matter, because we have lts f peple t guide yu. One f ur members even wn an award at last year’s Internatinal Film Festival in France, s yu’ll be in gd hands!
And even if making films isn’t really yur thing… jin anyway! It’s a great way t make new friends! We lk frward t seeing yu!
