The GIF – r graphics interchange frmat – has becme an imprtant part f tday’s meme (表情包) culture. But there have been heated arguments when it cmes t the wrd’s prnunciatin. Shuld it be prnunced with a hard G, as in “give”, r a sft G, as in “gentle”?

After a crrectin was made t the survey, the result came ut mre even, with 44 percent vting fr hard G and 32 percent fr sft G. The rest f the peple actually went fr the third chice – saying each letter ne by ne as “jee eye eff” (/dʒiː/ /aɪ/ /ef/), which is mst cmmn in Asia, especially in China and Suth Krea.
It may lk like the hard G is taking the lead in any case. But as The Ecnmist pinted ut, “A ppular belief isn’t always crrect.” The Oxfrd English Dictinary and Merriam-Webster aren’t picking sides either. They said that bth prnunciatins are acceptable.
S maybe it depends n yu. Just chse whichever ne that sunds gd – r rather, “jd” – t yu.

C.Mst peple say GIF with a sft G. D. Many Asians prnunce GIF letter by letter.

C. Abut 13000 peple went fr the hard G in the first survey.
D. Spanish peple might prnunce GIF as “JIF”.
