Sylvain Saudan’s skiing was s alarmingly ambitius that peple struggled t believe his accmplishments were real. Lcals didn’t trust that he’d really dne it until a plane flew ver the muntain and tk phts f his ski tracks. Nicknamed the “skier f the impssible,” Saudan sught ut slpes frm the Himalayas t the Alps, ften reaching the peaks by helicpter. But in 1982, he climbed fr 25 days t reach the 26, 500-ft summit f Pakistan’s Gasherbrum I, searching fr virgin areas in its natural state. “The first t dare smething are the real adventurers,” he said in 2016. “It’s the first that cunts.”
Raised n a farm in the Alps, Saudan didn’t have the resurces t train as a cmpetitive skier, and wrked as a labrer and truck driver befre becming a ski instructr. Teaching thrugh icy winters in Sctland helped gear him fr deadly slpes. After skiing the Spencer Culir, he spent tw decades “seeking greater challenges and testing new methds,” said The Washingtn Pst. He develped a new skiing style and intrduced equipment innvatins fr steep slpes, but ignred safety precautins as he sht dwn Oregn’s Munt Hd, Tanzania’s Munt Kilimanjar, and Nepal’s Dhaulagiri.
Saudan cmpleted his last majr expeditin in 1986 by skiing dwn Munt Fuji n bare rcks, walking away withut a single cut. He “spent his life challenging gravity and avalanches (雪崩),” said The New Yrk Times. He insisted that mental preparatin helped keep fear crnered, yet death was never far frm his mind. “There’s really nly ne way ut,” he said: “Dn’t fall dwn.”

Frm rlling hills t muntain ranges, views make any rad trip memrable, but fr blind passengers this is part f the experience they miss. Mtr cmpany Frd tries t change that. It teamed up with GTB Rma and AedPrject t develp a technlgy that will give thse unfrtunate passengers a way t feel nature’s beauty thrugh their car windws.
The prttype (原型) f the smart car windw has a device with an utside-facing camera. With just a press f a buttn, the system takes a picture f the current view. The clrful picture is then turned int an image with different shades f grey thrugh LED lights, which vibrates (震动) differently. As the finger passes ver different regins f the image, its shaking mvements prvide feedback thrugh the sense f tuch t the persn using it. The smart windw als cmes with a vice assistant that uses AI t identify the scene and help the passengers get infrmatin n what they’re seeing.
“As the prttype started taking shape, we realized we were giving birth t a cmpletely new language that wuld give blind peple a new chance t visualize and experience traveling,” Federic Russ, ne directr f GTB Rma, said. “When the idea was at its first stage, we lked fr suppliers all arund the wrld t make it cme t life.” He believes the technlgy can be emplyed nt just in cars. “It culd be intrduced int schls and institutins fr blind peple as a tl that culd be used in multiple ways.”
The technlgy may shw up in a Frd autnmus vehicle. It’s knwn that the cmpany is testing their technlgy and future business mdel and struggling t figure ut hw an autnmus vehicle gives different passengers the details needed t get frm ne destinatin t anther. It’s unclear when this technlgy will be made available. Hwever, the idea f building smething fr the less advanced is indeed a kind and influential actin.
Hw des the smart car windw wrk?
By srting shaking mvements.
By recrding the view with a camera.
By translating scenery int vibratins.
By presenting different shades f clrs.
What can we knw abut the technlgy accrding t Federic Russ?
It will have wide applicatin.C. It will be used in schls first.
It will be tested arund the wrld.D.It will understand different languages.
What difficulty is Frd facing currently?
Hw t explre their future business mdel.
Hw the technlgy is applied t everyday life.
Hw t prduce autnmus cars in large numbers.
Hw an autnmus vehicle prvides rute infrmatin.
Which can be the best title fr the text?

The rain frests are alive with the sund f animals. Besides the pleasure f the nise, it is als useful t eclgists. If yu want t measure the bidiversity f a piece f land, listening ut fr animal calls is much easier than digging abut in the undergrwth lking fr tracks. But such “bi-acustic analysis” is still time-cnsuming, and it requires an expert pair f ears.
In a paper published n Octber 17th in Nature Cmmunicatins, a grup f researchers led by Jörg Müller, an eclgist at the University f Würzburg, describe a better way: have a cmputer d the jb. Smartphne apps already exist that will identify birds, bats r mammals simply by listening t the sunds they make. Their idea was t apply the principle t cnservatin wrk.
The researchers tk recrdings frm acrss 43 sites in the Ecuadrean rainfrest. Sund recrdings were taken fur times every hur, ver tw weeks. The varius calls were identified manually by an expert, and then used t cnstruct a list f the species present. As expected, the lnger the land had been free frm agricultural activity, the greater the bidiversity it hsted.
Then it was the cmputer’s turn. The researchers fed their recrdings t artificial-intelligence mdels that had been trained, using sund samples frm elsewhere in Ecuadr, t identify 75 bird species frm their calls. “We fund that the AI tls culd identify the sunds as well as the experts,” says Dr Müller.
Of curse, nt everything in a rainfrest makes a nise. Dr Müller and his clleagues used light-traps t capture night-flying insects, and DNA analysis t identify them. Reassuringly, they fund that the diversity f nisy animals was a reliable prxy (指标) fr the diversity f the quieter nes, t.
The results may have relevance utside eclgy departments, t. Under pressure frm their custmers, firms such as L’Oreal, a make-up cmpany, and Shell, an il firm, have been spending mney n frest restratin prjects arund the wrld. Dr Müller hpes that an autmated apprach t checking n the results culd help mnitr such effrts, and give a standardized way t measure whether they are wrking as well as their spnsrs say.
Which f the fllwing best describes Dr Müller’s methd f bi-acustic analysis?
Cstly. B. Impractical. C. High-tech. D. Labr-cnsuming.
33. What can we learn frm the research f Dr Müller?
A. The species in the rainfrests have increased.
B. Agricultural activity negatively influenced the richness in species.
C. There are mre reliable sund recrdings in Ecuadrean rainfrest.
D. Trained AI mdels can identify as many kinds f sunds as experts.
34. Why did Dr Müller and his clleagues d the survey in Paragraph 5?
A. T figure ut the species f quieter animals.
B. T cnfirm the bidiversity f the quieter animals.
C. T emphasize the bidiversity f the nisy animals.
D. T cmpare the nisy animals and the quieter nes.
35.What’s the main idea f the last paragraph?
A. The investment in bi-acustic analysis.
B. The imprtance f frest restratin prjects.
C. The standard t measure the autmated apprach.
D. The research’s impact n frest restratin prjects.
