Stefan Hlm was tld he was t shrt t be a high jumper, but he wn an Olympic gld medal after 15 years f persistence and hard wrk. Nadia Cmaneci, hwever, had a very different path. Frm a yung age, she displayed an extrardinary natural talent fr gymnastics, perfrming rutines with precisin and grace that seemed effrtless. Her talent carried her t Olympic fame, where she became the first gymnast in histry t scre a perfect 10.
Listen t Olympians talk, and yu’ll mstly hear tales that ech the first stry — tales f irn discipline, f vercming initial setbacks. Here is Usain Blt, n the secret f his victry: “Easy is nt an ptin. N days ff. Never quit.”
But the Olympics als reveal that talent matters t. Blt is said t have been brn with the ideal traits (特性) fr a runner. Eer Mäntyranta, wh wn seven Olympic medals in crss-cuntry skiing, had a genetic mutatin (突变) that gave him extra red bld cells. Hard wrk is imprtant, sure, but nt everyne can wrk their way t the tp.
Caches and sprts psychlgists ften translate gld medal glry int “life lessns” fr the masses, prmting the idea that they can dream a life int being. But it is als, I think, a rather unhealthy principle n which t fund a sciety.
Fr ne thing, it leads us directly t a depressing hthuse culture. If hard wrk and achievement are jined by a straight line, why ever pause fr a rest? Yu think f tday’s exam-burdened schlchildren, their leisure hurs packed with imprving activities, wh increasingly cmplain f mental health issues.
Fr anther, the idea rules ut the chance a champin culd emerge a little later in life, frm a grup that wasn’t bsessively cached frm birth by resurce-rich parents. This, t, is a lessn f the Olympics. Talent matters, and it can cme frm anywhere.
24. Wh achieved greatness thrugh effrt rather than a natural talent?
A. Stefan Hlm.B. Nadia Cmaneci.C. Usain Blt.D. Eer Mäntyranta.
25. What’s a prblem with the idea that peple can dream a life int being?
A. It causes cultural cnflicts.B. It creates unnecessary pressure.
C. It veremphasizes the functin f talent.D. It ignres the imprtance f early training.
26. Hw des the authr interpret the rad t becming a champin?
A. It is never t late t pursue dreams.
B. Peple with talent are meant t succeed.
C. Success favrs thse wh can handle stress.
D. Athletes withut rich resurces will suffer defeat.
27. What can be a suitable title fr the text?
A. Effrt Has a Rle in Success.B. Dn’t Put Yur Faith in Talent.
C. Practice Desn’t Always Make Perfect.D. Willpwer Speaks Luder Than Hard Wrk.

Amng the members f my scial netwrk, a handful bring ut mixed emtins — bth eagerness and fear. Interactins with them feel like a cnversatinal game f Russian rulette (轮盘赌). In the right md, these individuals can deliver a fun-filled evening, but if I catch them at the wrng mment, they can wipe ut all my psitive energy. There is simply n knwing what is t cme. If this sunds familiar, then yu t have frenemies.
Julianne Hlt-Lunstad and her clleagues at Brigham Yung University have designed a scale that identifies fur categries f relatinships. Yu can try it fr yurself. Pick a cuple f peple within yur scial netwrk and answer the fllwing tw questins n a scale f ne (nt at all) t six (very much). When yu are feeling in need f advice, understanding r a favr, hw helpful is yur cnnectin? Likewise, hw upsetting is yur cnnectin?
Peple wh scre ne n bth questins are yur indifferent relatinships — a neighbr, perhaps, with neither gd nr bad qualities. Thse wh scre highly n the first questin, while getting the lwest pssible rating n the secnd, are yur supprtive and lyal scial ties. Thse with the lwest scre n the first questin and high marks n the secnd are aversive relatinships. Finally, anyne with a scre f tw r mre n bth scales is cnsidered an ambivalent cnnectin — yur frenemies. They may be incredibly generus when yu have a prblem yet can als strike back with a bitter put-dwn when they feel envius r threatened.
Research suggests that ambivalent, lve-hate relatinships are ften mre stressful than cnsistently negative nes, damaging mental and physical health. Cutting ff cntact may nt always be pssible, especially if the persn is a bss r family member. S, what can be dne?
Simply being aware f the ambivalent nature f a relatinship might ffer sme prtectin. Persnally, I use this insight t prepare myself emtinally, fcus n the psitives, and limit interactins when needed. It als leads me t reflect n my wn actins — am I ever the frenemy? I am reslved t be a little mre mindful f my interactins with all my ties.
28. Why des the authr cmpare interactins with certain peple t Russian rulette?
A. T suggest ways t handle these interactins.
B. T shw hw these peple cmpete fr attentin.
C. T intrduce a scial game these peple like t play.
D. T stress hw unpredictable these interactins can be.
29. Which figure best illustrates the different types f relatinships in ur scial netwrk?
AB

30. What des the authr suggest readers d?
A. Avid interacting with frenemies.
B. Cautin against acting like a frenemy.
C. Encurage frenemies t act mre psitively.
D. Balance frenemies with supprtive friendships.
31. What is the central message the authr intends t cnvey thrugh this text?
A. A friend in need is a friend indeed.B. Only true friends are wrth keeping.
C. A healthy friendship needs give-and-take.D. Lve-hate relatinships are surprisingly bad.

The numerus bacteria that naturally inhabit the human bdy seem t help us in many ways. One grup is emerging as particularly beneficial: a type f gut (肠道) bacteria knwn as Blautia, which has made headlines recently because it seems t exert sme really remarkable effects. Nw, a Chinese team is glimpsing anther ptential benefit f Blautia: helping peple adapt t high altitudes. Their findings suggest that prviding Blautia culd help muntaineers and thers perfrm better in these challenging envirnments.
Qing-Peng Kng, a geneticist at the Chinese Academy f Sciences, and his team recruited 45 men t mve frm their hmes at 250 meters abve sea level t a twn at abut 3,700 meters. Despite the thin air, the men ate similar fd as they had at hme, minimizing the effects f diet changes n their gut bacteria. After 2 days, Blautia went frm being rare t very abundant in their guts.
The team then subjected mice t cntrlled lw-xygen cnditins in the lab, simulating (模拟) an altitude f 4,000 meters, while giving Blautia t half f them every ther day. The Blautia-treated mice shwed milder symptms f altitude sickness. This pens the dr int whether altitude sickness might be amenable t treatment thrugh the gut.
The bacteria’s effect may als extend t the brain. “Its superpwer cmes frm the cnnectin between the gut and the brain,” says Klepac-Cerak at Wellesley Cllege. The fatty acids it makes are knwn t activate receptrs n nerves that cnnect the digestive system, heart and brain. This culd help explain a surprising crrelatin that Klepac-Cerak reprted last year: Kids are mre likely t talk and laugh when they have mre Blautia in their guts. “There’s lts f cmmunicatin happening between ur bacteria and ur brain; we are just beginning t uncver what services bacteria d fr us,” Klepac-Cerak ntes.
Blautia’s apparent superpwers suggest t Kng it culd serve as a supplement (补充) that benefits peple regardless f whether they are planning a trip t Tibet. But first, Kng says, he wants t find ut whether Blautia is a “sl” player r exerts these prtective effects nly as part f a larger grup f bacteria.
32. What’s the significance f the study led by a Chinese team?
A. It prvides a practical payff.B. It reaches a cnclusive finding.
C. It caused a scial media sensatin.D. It intrduces a pineering technlgy.
33. What d we knw abut the subjects in bth experiments?
A. They received Blautia in their diet.B. They mved t high-altitude regins.
C. They suffered severe altitude sickness.D. They experienced lw-xygen cnditins.
34. What des the underlined wrd “amenable” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Resistant.B. Incurable.C. Respnsive.D. Insensitive.
35. Hw wuld bth Kng and Klepac-Cerak describe Blautia’s rle in human health?
A. A duble-edged swrd.B. A sl player.
C. A partially-understd influence.D. A cst-effective slutin.

“ASHLEY! OUR SANDY is singing again!”
Kayla, ur star, was rehearsing (排练) “Tmrrw” when Baily, ur dg, decided it was his mment t shine. His ear-splitting a-r eched Kayla’s emtinal high ntes.
“Knck it ff!” Kayla shuted at the dg. She mtined fr the rchestra t stp. “This isn’t wrking! I can’t sing this sng until we find a decent Sandy!” She strmed ff the stage.
Sandy was suppsed t be merely a supprting rle in Tmrrw, ur schl’s musical abut an rphan and the stray (流浪) dg she rescued. But Baily clearly thught therwise. He was ur third Sandy, but I knew he wuld nt be the last.
The first Sandy we hired barked at everyne. The secnd Sandy wuld run wildly arund the stage, kncking dwn prps (道具) and turning the set int a mess. Mr. Lmis, ur directr, was very clse t just getting a stuffed animal r an actr in a dg suit.
“Ashley, can yu find anther dg by Mnday?” Mr. Lmis asked.
“Sure,” I said, feeling a bit verwhelmed. Being the assistant stage manager, I never imagined that finding the perfect dg wuld be s hard. We needed a dg with a winning persnality and, ideally, sme f Kayla’s star qualities — a dg that lked beautiful and cnfident n stage.
After rehearsal, ur assistant directr suggested that I speak t his neighbur, Mrs. Kelly, wh ran the lcal animal shelter. Desperate, I agreed t at least take a lk. I’d avided the shelter s far because we needed a star, nt a sad rescue case.
We walked t Mrs. Kelly’s huse. Once there, she greeted us with a huge smile and intrduced us t Farley, a calm, friendly dg that used t wrk part-time at an airprt cmfrting nervus passengers befre being hit by a car. Farley’s sulful eyes and striking black-and-white fur seemed like the perfect cmbinatin — just what we needed fr Sandy.

27. C 主旨大意。本文不赞同将努力与成功直接连线,认为这会带来早培等社会问题。故选择C作为标题“熟未必能生巧”。

39. E 从第四段“Life happens and smetimes peple take time ff;”和“S might cnstant jb-switching, which is as much f a red flag t recruiters.”可知,短暂的空窗期无伤大雅,而长期换工作则是一个不好的信号。选项E提到“长达十年的空窗期”符合逻辑。
