Hw is a GPA calculated?
● Determine the letter grade and the number f credit hurs fr each curse yu take in a term;
● Translate the letter grade t grade pints using yur schl’s grading system;

What are the cnsequences f failing cllege curses?
● Every failing grade (F) significantly impacts yur GPA fr that academic year, limiting clubs, rganizatins and prgram chices, as cmpetitive prgrams require tp GPAs.
● Mst financial aid prgrams require a specific GPA. A sharp drp in GPA due t several curse failures may lead t withdrawal frm financial aid prgrams, unless yu retake the curses and pass.
● Fr cllege athletes n sprts schlarships, failing curses repeatedly can lead t lsing schlarships and team sprts.

Living in Iwa and trying t becme a phtgrapher specializing in landscape can be quite a challenge, mainly because the crn state lacks gegraphical variatin.
Althugh landscapes in the Midwest tend t be quite similar, either farm fields r highways, smetimes I find distinctive character in the hills r lakes. T make sme f my landscape shts, I have traveled up t fur hurs away t sht within a 10-minute time frame. I tend t travel with a few f my friends t state parks r t the cuntryside t g n adventures and take phts alng the way.
Being at the right place at the right time is decisive in any style f phtgraphy. I ften leave early t seek the right destinatins s I can set up early t avid missing the mment I am attempting t phtgraph. I have missed plenty f beautiful sunsets/sunrises due t being n the spt nly five minutes befre the best mment. One time my friends and I drve three hurs t Devil’s Lake, Wiscnsin, t climb the purple quartz (石英) rck arund the lake. After we fund a crazy-lking rad that hung ver a bunch f rcks, we decided t phtgraph the scene at sunset. The psitin enabled us t lk ver the lake with the sunset in the backgrund. We managed t leave this spt t climb higher because f the spare time until sunset. Hwever, we did nt mark the rute s we ended up almst missing the sunset entirely. Once we fund the place, it was stressful getting lights and cameras set up in the limited time. Still, lking back n the phts, they are sme f my best shts thugh they culd have been s much better if I wuld have been prepared and managed my time wisely.

A study cnducted by Crnell University examined hw the use f AI in cnversatins impacts the way peple express themselves and view each ther.
The researchers have fund peple have mre efficient cnversatins, use mre psitive language and perceive each ther mre psitively when using an AI-enabled chat tl.
Hwever, the grup als fund that when participants think their partner is using mre AI-suggested respnses, they cnsider that partner as less cperative.
“I was surprised t find peple tend t evaluate yu mre negatively simply because they suspect yu’re using AI t help cmpse text, regardless f whether yu actually are,” said Jess Hhenstein, the lead researcher. “This illustrates the cntinuus verall dubt that peple seem t have arund AI.”
Fr their first experiment, participants were asked t talk abut a plicy issue and assigned t ne f three cnditins: bth participants can use smart replies; nly ne participant can use smart replies; r neither participant can use smart replies. Researchers fund that using smart replies increased cmmunicatin efficiency, psitive emtinal language and psitive evaluatins by cmmunicatin partners. On average, smart replies accunted fr 14.3% f sent messages.
But participants whse partners suspected f respnding with smart replies were evaluated mre negatively than thse wh were thught t have typed their wn respnses, cnsistent with cmmn assumptins abut the negative implicatins f AI.
“While AI might be able t help yu write,” Hhenstein said, “it’s altering yur language in ways yu might nt expect, especially by making yu sund mre psitive. This suggests that by using text-generating AI, yu’re giving up sme f yur wn persnal vice.”
Malte Jung, an assciate prfessr, said, “What we bserve in this study is the impact that AI has n scial dynamics and sme f the unintended cnsequences that culd result frm integrating AI in scial cntexts. This suggests that whever cntrls the algrithm (算法) may have influence n peple’s interactins, language and insights int each ther.”
28. Hw d the researchers draw their cnclusin?
A. By analyzing figures.B. By making use f AI.
C. By cnducting experiments.D. By cmpleting questinnaires.
29. Which statement des Hhenstein agree with?
A. AI always expresses in ways yu expect.
B. Algrithm will never influence peple’s insights.
C. Trust can be affected by using AI in cnversatin.
D. Yu will regain yur vice by using AI in cnversatin.
30. Hw will a persn feel abut suspecting his partner’s using smart replies?
A. Nervus.B. Uncmfrtable.C. Excited.D. Puzzled.
31. What is the text mainly abut?
A. Methds f using AI in cnversatins. B. Efficiency f using AI in cnversatins.
C. Cnvenience f using AI in cnversatins.D. Impacts f using AI in cnversatins.

A theme at this year’s Wrld Ecnmic Frum (WEF) meeting in Switzerland was the perceived need t “speed up breakthrughs in research and technlgy.” Sme f this framing was mtivated by the climate emergency, sme by the pprtunities and challenges presented by generative artificial intelligence. Yet in varius cnversatins, it seemed t be taken fr granted that t address the wrld’s prblems, scientific research needs t mve faster. The WEF mindset is similar t the Silicn Valley dictate—t mve fast and break things. But what if the thing being brken is science? Or public trust?
The WEF meeting tk place just tw weeks after Harvard University President Claudine Gay stepped dwn after cmplaints were made abut her plitical science schlarship. In respnse, Gay requested crrectins t several f her papers. Althugh it may be impssible t determine just hw widespread such prblems really are, it’s hard t imagine that the scene f high-prfile schlars crrecting and retracting papers has nt had a negative impact n public trust in science and perhaps in experts bradly.
In recent years we’ve seen imprtant papers, written by utstanding scientists and published in celebrated jurnals, retracted because f questinable data r methds, hence a questin: Are schlars at supercmpetitive places such as Harvard and Stanfrd rushing t publish rather than taking the time t d their wrk right?
It’s impssible t answer this questin scientifically because there’s n scientific definitin f what cnstitutes “rushing”. But there’s little dubt that we live in a culture where academics at leading universities are under tremendus pressure t prduce results—and a lt f them—quickly.
The prblem is nt unique t the US. In Eurpe, frmal research assessments—which are used t allcate (分配) future funding—have fr years judged academic departments largely n the quantity f their utput. A recent refrm urging an emphasis n quality ver quantity allwed that the existing system had created “cunterincentives.”
Gd science takes time. Mre than 50 years elapsed between the 1543 publicatin f Cpernicus’s On the Revlutins f the Heavenly Spheres. And it tk just abut half a century fr gelgists and gephysicists t accept gephysicist Alfred Wegener’s idea f cntinental drift.
There’s plenty f circumstantial evidence that scientists and ther schlars are pushing results ut far faster than they used t. Cnsider the sheer vlume f academic papers being published these days. One recent study put the number at mre than seven millin a year, cmpared with fewer than a millin as recently as 1980. Sme f this grwth is driven by mre scientists and mre c-authrship f papers, but the numbers als suggest that the research wrld has priritized quantity ver quality. Researchers may need t slw dwn if we are t prduce knwledge wrthy f trust.
32. WEF meeting in Switzerland advcated that ________.
A. researchers need t achieve breakthrughs mre rapidly
B. climate emergency and AI push scientific research hard
C. WEF and Silicn Valley reach an agreement t mve fast
D. public trust in science is nt suppsed t be easily brken
33. Which f the fllwing examples fails t prve that gd science takes time?
A. Gay’s crrectin and retractin f papers.B. Publicatin f Cpernicus’s thery.
C. High-prfile schlars’ tremendus utput.D. Acceptance f the idea f cntinental drift.
34. The underlined wrd “cunterincentives” in paragraph 5 prbably means ________.
A. measures t increase quantities f utputB. discuragements f high quality papers
C. rewards fr leading universities’ researchD. cntradictry mtives fr future funding
35. What is a suitable title fr the text?
A. WEF Cincides with Silicn ValleyB. Cllapse f Public Trust
C. Dilemma between Quantity and QualityD. Truble in the Fast Lane

After she left, I tk a clser lk at the pht. The clck in the backgrund read 4:15 pm, but ur game against Deerfield hadn’t started until 4:30 pm. Why wuld the by have taken Perry befre we even played? An uneasy feeling came ver me that we might have falsely accused smene.
