I switched t a flip phne(翻盖手机). It vastly imprved my life. I felt empty and frustrated at hw much time I spent n my smartphne. S I spent the last five years steadily stripping my phne dwn t the basics. Scial media was the first t g, then email, then news apps, and then even internet brwsers.
I lng cnsidered switching t a flip phne, but I always fund an excuse t stay. Ultimately it was tw f my students, 15- and 18-year-ld sisters, wh pushed me ver the edge. Wrd spread arund schl that they had bught flip phnes. If they were brave enugh t take the plunge, I culd, t. I spent $9 n a flip phne, plus $120 fr a year f unlimited talk and text n a new number. Fr the last five mnths, I haven’t carried a smartphne with me, just my flip phne.
This is the charming, rmantic side f wning a flip phne: mre cnversatins, mre eye cntact, mre cnnectin. The separatin between wrk and life is much mre nticeable. I dn’t verthink wrk emails all day, since I n lnger carry my wrk email in my pcket. I am living mre like my creative, curius, phne-free children.
This all sunds wnderful because it is wnderful. And nw it’s cnfessin time: I still have my smartphne. As it turns ut, ur addictin t smartphnes is nt just n an individual level. Intentinally r nt, we have built structures that depend upn smartphne access, making it an essential feature f mdern life. While mst f the flip phne incnveniences are charming, sme f them are s frustrating that they make yu want t pull yur hair ut.
Despite that, I will cntinue t use a flip phne as my primary phne s I dn’t have t carry a smartphne with me. And I will cntinue t evangelize fr it. I hpe many thers get flip phnes. We will all be better fr it. If nthing else, it’ll be nice t have mre peple t talk t in the grcery line.

The ak tree has been in suthern England cntinuusly fr 12,000 years. But des it have a future?
By 2050, Lndn’s weather culd resemble that f Barcelna, with lng stretches f summer drught. These ancient trees were nt designed t thrive in such cnditins. Arund the wrld, millins f creatures facing unprecedented temperatures and habitat lss are n the mve.
We d nt tend t think f trees as migratry: they are slw-grwing and rted t the grund. Faced with this prblem, the eclgist Charlie Gardner is ne f a grwing number prpsing a radical, cntrversial slutin: we help the trees n their march. Sme scientists advcate mving individual species hundreds f kil-metres nrth, within the cuntry and frm abrad. Others say entire ecsystems shuld be trans-lcated, mving multiple species at nce.
The “assisted migratin” is divisive. Cnservatinists have lng argued against intrducing nn-native species. They have cncerns abut unintended cnsequences f assisted migratin. “Large-scale mving f ecsystems can’t be undne(撤销), s shuld be very much a last chice,” said Andrew Allen frm the Wdland Trust. Allen believes we shuld priritise helping native trees adapt t changes by encuraging natural regeneratin, expanding and cnnecting existing wdlands.
But thers say thse arguments fail t deal with speed r size f change caused by the climate crisis. “Earlier in my career the narrative was all abut restring past baselines, and then, as I gt mre independent in my research, I realised that’s impssible. We are changing the climate s much, s we have t be a little mre inventive. When we have examples f assisted migratin, it’s ften with species which are abslutely n the edge f extinctin and have run ut f ther ptins,” said Sarah Dalrymple, a cnservatin eclgist frm Liverpl University, wh is part f the task frce. She wants t see assisted migratin explred earlier, wrking with species befre their ppulatins becme s small. “Yu can never get rid f all the risks, but there is als risk in inactin,” she said. “The risk f inactin is increasing every day.”
    28. What is the prblem facing ancient trees in Lndn?
    A. Lng summer. B. Habitat destructin.
    C. Extreme weather. D. Slw grwth.
    29. Which f the fllwing statements may Andrew Allen agree with?
    A. Large-scale mving f ecsystems is impssible.
    B. Assisted migratin may cntribute t bad results. C. Nn-native species are beneficial t ecsystems.
    D. Native species can survive changes by themselves.
    30. What des Sarah Dalrymple urge peple t d in the last paragraph?
    A. Stp changing the climate.
    B. Have mre ptins t help species.
    C. Help native trees t adapt t climate changes.
    D. Take actin earlier t prevent species ’ extinctin.
    31. What might be the authr’s attitude twards assisted migratin?
    A. Supprtive. B. Cautius. C. Objective. D. Dubtful.
    D
In a study published in Persnality and Scial Psychlgy Bulletin, researchers fund that peple tend t turn dwn ffers f “free mney,” as well as unusually high salaries r suspiciusly cheap services, because they seem “t gd t be true.”
In the initial experiment, nearly 40 percent f participants ate a ckie ffered freely – cmpared with abut 20 percent f thse ffered $5 as well. Nine further experiments, invlving mre than 4,000 participants, used nline questinnaires t present ther scenaris. These included being ffered mney t accept a ride hme, extremely high cnstructin-jb wages and surprisingly cheap flights. In each case, past a certain pint, higher ptential mnetary gain reduced participants’ likelihd f accepting the ffer.
The study lead authr Vnasch says it illustrates that cntrary t the “standard ecnmic mdel,” which suppses humans always seek t maximize gains, transactins need t als be understd as scial interactins between peple trying t understand each ther’s minds. If smene seems t break accepted rules, such as self-interest, withut any explanatin, we assume they have hidden mtives and infer there will be “phantm csts” – imagined cnsequences that reduce what Vnasch calls an ffer’s “psychlgical value.”
Factrs beynd the present mment may cme int play. “Understanding that thers’ perceived vergenersity may put us in their debt culd als help explain peple’s reluctance,” says Rachel McCly, a psychlgist at England’s University f Reading. The researchers als shwed hw t mitigate the effect: simply prvide a reasn fr the deal. The “cheap flights” experiment included a cnditin where the seats were revealed t be very uncmfrtable. “Uncmfrtable seats aren’t typically a selling pint,” Vnasch says. “But telling peple the seats were uncmfrtable made them mre willing t take them because it was sufficient explanatin.”
The scientists are nw experimenting with whether phantm csts play int humans’ interactins with rbts and artificial intelligence. “If AI is verly generus, will peple imagine phantm csts?” Vnasch says. “Peple tend t treat AI as if they have a mind, when bviusly they dn’t.”
    32. Accrding t paragraph 2, the experiments mainly fcus n peple’s .
    A. Thinking methd. B. Decisin making.
    C. Financial cnditin. D. Ptential ability.
    33. Why des the authr mentin “standard ecnmic mdel”?
    A. T explain the experiments further. B. T clarify a psychlgical cncept.
    C. T prvide evidence fr the study. D. T express dubt n the experiments.
    34. What des the underlined wrd “mitigate” in paragraph 4 prbably mean?
    A. Analyse. B. Imprve. C. Measure. D. Lessen.
    35. Which f the fllwing is the best title fr the text?
    A. Phantm csts: Where “standard ecnmic mdel” desn’t wrk
    B. Phantm csts: Whether peple’s likelihd f accepting an ffer reduces
    C. Phantm csts: Why “t gd t be true” scares peple ff
    D. Phantm csts: Hw imagined cnsequences prevent hidden mtives 第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2.5 分,满分 12.5 分)
