NEW YORK - Salt Lake City is mst likely t be awarded the 2034 Winter Olympics later this year, and fficials said that its cmplete infrastructure (基础设施) and enthusiastic public supprt are what has paved the way. Utah’s capital city hsted the Games back in 2002 and Internatinal Olympic Cmmittee representatives recently tured the city and heard plans fr its “n-build” Games.
N ther cities are in the running fr the 2034 Games, Salt Lake City 2034 and France 2030 were picked as preferred hsts fr the Winter Olympics in Nvember. “They gt an pprtunity t see ur venues and hw they are still thriving (兴旺),” Catherine Raney-Nrman, chair f the Salt Lake City - Utah Cmmittee fr the Games, said in an interview, “They left excited by what they had seen. It was extremely psitive.”
While ther cities have sured n the idea f hsting an Olympics fr fears f cst that may be much higher than planned r expected, that is nt the case in Salt Lake City, where the legacy (遗产) f the 2002 Games cntinues t exist. “Our investigatin has shwn that we have ver 80 percent public supprt,” said Raney-Nrman, a fur-time Olympic speed skater. “That’s amazing. The Winter Olympics have grwn by abut 40 percent, with mre sprts added since Salt Lake City hsted them, but the city can handle the additinal actin, Raney-Nrman said. “We knw that, within ur venues and with ur technical side, we can hst thse events,” Raney-Nrman said. New events culd be held at a temprary dwntwn venue, while the University f Utah will serve as the athletes’ village, she said.

Every six days, students at Hite Elementary Schl get an extra 50 minutes f math-fcused instructin. They play simple math games and cunt alud t learn number recgnitin — it’s all dne in Chinese.
Principal Tim Hagan said Chinese language instructin enhances the schl’s existing Singapre Math curriculum (课程), which attributes (归因) the math skill gap between Chinese — and English-speaking students t language differences and the way students understand numbers.
The Natinal Center fr Educatin Statistics (NCES) cnducts a study every fur years t cmpare the math ability f students frm mre than 50 cuntries. Fr the past 20 years students in Chinese-speaking cuntries have rutinely utperfrmed thse in English-speaking cuntries. “One f the reasns that Chinese students have dne well in math is their language itself autmatically breaks apart numbers int tens and nes,” said Hite Chinese teacher Emily Smith. “We’re having t teach kids t d that because ur language desn’t d it autmatically.”
Fr the 2022-23 schl year, Hite prvided $60,000 schl-based funds t purchase and fllw the Singapre Math curriculum, which math teachers taught in English. Students learned t cunt the “say ten way” — where “eleven” became “ten ne” and twelve became “ten tw”.
Offering Chinese language instructin is just taking it ne step further, Smith said. In Chinese, the “say ten way” is hw numbers are naturally learned and spken, she explained, adding that saying “twenty” in Chinese is like saying “tw ten”.
Hagan called the Chinese system mre efficient than English in getting students t visualize, understand and calculate numbers. He has already seen imprvement. Standardized test scres released earlier this mnth revealed the schl’s “greatest increase in perfrmance was in kids wh have truble in math”.
