    Fat Is Gd
It desn’t matter if yu are part f the fat is GOOD fr yu r BAD fr yu grup, the imprtant questin t ask is the surce f the fat. If it cmes frm a land-based animal, and is likely t be slid at rm temperature, then it is saturated (饱和的) fat whereas if it cmes frm fish r plants, and it is likely t be liquid at rm temperature, then it is unsaturated fat. All the evidence indicates that eating mre unsaturated fat than saturated fat lwers yur risk f dying early.
    Natural Sugar Is Better
The vast majrity f sugar we cnsume is sucrse (蔗糖). It is the white pwdered stuff we ck with and is made up f glucse and fructse. Hw abut sugar frm hney? It is ften marketed as natural and better fr yu. Actually, it just has its wn distinct flavur, but is as sweet because f glucse and fructse.
    High-pH Water
Sme peple think we need t eat alkali (碱) fd t maintain ur bld at a pH f 7.4. But everything we eat r drink passes thrugh the stmach, which, at a pH f 1.5, is the mst acidic part f the bdy. It is then neutralised t a pH f 7. S, nthing we eat will change the pH f ur bld.
Dn’t Eat Anything That Yu Can’t Prnunce
Whether fds are natural r highly prcessed, they are all full f chemicals. Are yu suppsed t fear “phenylthicarbamide”, because yu can’t prnunce it? This is simply the chemical respnsible fr the bitter taste fund in brassicas, the plants in the cabbage and mustard family.
Dn’t Eat Fd With Mre Than Five Ingredients(佐料)
Simple fds are nt necessarily healthier fr yu. If I, fr instance, use Chinese five spice pwder in a recipe, that wuld cunt as ne f the five ingredients. Curage is a huge theme in my life, a quality I cnstantly seek, appreciate, and analyze. The rt f “curage” is “cr,” the Latin wrd fr heart. In the beginning, curage meant “t speak ne’s mind by telling all ne’s heart.” While curage is ften assciated with herism nwadays, I believe true curage lies in being pen and hnest abut wh we are and hw we feel.
I recently witnessed an example f true curage. During a muntain-climbing trip with my 15-year-ld daughter and sme cllege students, I nticed her struggling t keep up with the grup. Despite my suggestins t rest, she persisted until she culdn’t breathe prperly.
Panicked, I called ut t the frnt fr help, but there was n respnse, and we had n cellphne signal. Frtunately, tw students just came back t check ut n us. They ffered assistance and calmed us dwn. As we cntinued at a slwer pace, they shared their wn experiences, frm starting ut as beginners like my daughter t becming cnsistently amng the first t reach the peak.
“Yu knw,” ne f them said, lking at my daughter, “I was just like yu when I started.
But with practice and prper pace, yu’ll get there t.”
“Yeah, dn’t let yur lack f experience stp yu,” the ther added. “It’s kay t admit when yu’re struggling r nt feeling alright. In fact, it’s imprtant t speak up and ask fr help when yu need it. That’s hw we imprve and grw.”
Reaching the muntain tp was a huge relief fr bth my daughter and me. Hwever, the tw students addressed the celebrating grup directly, emphasizing the imprtance f staying tgether in tugh envirnments. Their wrds led the grup t aplgize t us fr verlking ur struggle.
I was ttally amazed at their bravery, and my daughter learned that it’s kay t be the least experienced in a grup. Curage, I’ve cme t realize, has a ripple effect. Each time we chse curage, we inspire thse arund us t be a little braver and make the wrld a little better.
    4. Why des the authr mentin the riginal meaning f curage?
    A. T questin the cmmn belief f curage.
    B. T argue fr the true nature f curage.
    C. T shw the changing meaning f curage.
    D. T cmpare different interpretatins f curage.
    5. What did the tw students suggest the daughter d?
    A. Keep t a suitable pace.B. Seek help whenever pssible.
    C. Challenge her wn limits.D. Stick with experienced climbers.
    6. Which actin in the muntain-climbing stry is an example f true curage?
    A. The mther asked the girl t rest.
    B. The girl tried hard nt t fall behind.
    C. The tw students pinted ut the grup’s fault.
    D. The grup celebrated the reach f the muntain tp.
    7. What des the authr intend t tell us?
    A. Kindness cnnects us all.B. Being a beginner takes curage.
    C. We dn’t have t be a her t be brave.D. With curage, everyne can be perfect.

Five times strnger than steel, spider silk’s unique qualities were recgnized by the Ancient Greeks—and mre recently, scientists have lked at applicatins frm medicine t engineering. Nw, a Japanese startup, Spiber, has begun t change the textile industry with this remarkable material.
The cmpany started by making a substitute in the lab that is similar t spider silk in structure. After studying thusands f different spider species and ther silk-prducing life frms, Spiber successfully prduced an alternative t spider silk. This breakthrugh was achieved by fermenting (发酵) a mixture f water, sugar, and nutrients with special micrbes t prduce prtein plymers (聚合物). These plymers are then made int fibers, paving the way fr a range f innvative fabrics.
Hwever, shifting frm lab t practical applicatin presented challenges. In 2015, Spiber partnered with The Nrth Face Japan t prduce a limited-editin run f 50 “Mn Parka” jackets t celebrate the 50th anniversary f the mn landings. But during the design prcess, the team discvered that spider silk became smaller when expsed t water, and had t transfrm the prtein t make the fiber suitable fr an utdr jacket, which tk them fur years t perfect.
Currently, the cmpany uses sugarcane and crn fr its fermentatin prcess — crps that use large vlumes f land and change fd resurces. T reduce its envirnmental impact, Spiber is develping a prcess called “bisphere circulatin” that will transfrm deserted clthes made frm natural materials like cttn int the sugars needed fr fermentatin.
With apprximately 100 billin yen ($783 millin) in funding, Spiber plans t significantly speed up its prductin f prtein plymers by the end f 2025. “Mass prductin will help bring the price f fibers dwn and allw Spiber t expand beynd the high-end designer market and thus we have the means t create slutins t enable mre circular fashin,” says Higashi, head f business develpment at Spiber. “It’s ur missin t bring thse slutins t the wrld.”
    8. What breakthrugh did Spiber achieve in the early research?
    A. It mixed varius prtein plymers.B. It prduced a silk making machine.
    C. It identified different spider species.D. It created a replacement fr spider silk.
    9. What was the challenge in making the “Mn Parka” jackets?
    A. High design csts.B. Spider silk’s sensitivity t water.
    C. Limited raw materials.D. The partner’s unwillingness t help.
    10. What can we knw abut Spiber’s “bisphere circulatin” prcess?
    A. It will replace the current fermentatin prcess.
    B. It will use recycled materials fr needed sugars.
    C. It will prmte the develpment f fd industry.
    D. It will simplify the prcedure f clthing prductin.
    11. What is Spiber’s plan?
    A. T raise mre mney fr mass prductin.B. T increase the utput f prtein plymers.
    C. T wrk with ther high-end fashin brands.D. T develp a wider range f expensive fibers.
    D
My father started learning French at 57, drawn by the ptential benefits f bilingualism (双语能力) in delaying dementia (失智症). Nw, 20 years later, he’s n his third teacher. Many peple like my father have attempted t pick up a new language. But can this really bst brain health?
Accrding t experts, regularly using a new language brings cgnitive (认知的) benefits. If yu’re trying t recall the right wrds in anther language, yur brain is frced t inhibit yur mther tngue. This prcess, called cgnitive inhibitin, helps imprve yur brain functin. Repeating this prcess makes yur brain mre resistant t diseases like dementia. The mre yu challenge yur brain, the better it functins, even if yur brain health starts t decline.
Hwever, evidence fr the benefits f learning a secnd language in yur 60s is weaker. Research by Dr. Le Antniu fund that lder Italians wh tk English lessns fr fur mnths didn’t see any difference in their cgnitin scres, but peple wh didn’t saw their scres decline. Prf. Diana Smith’s 2023 studies fund similar results.
Researchers ffered a few ptential explanatins fr their disappinting results. One is that the participants were highly mtivated vlunteers, prbably f high cgnitive level fr their age, making it hard t see any imprvements. “When chsing participants, we have t be careful, are they really representative f the ppulatin?” said Dr. Judith Ware. Anther is that the language interventins were perhaps t shrt. These studies have used language lessns that “were very different in their length and frequency,” said Prf. Laura Grssman.
T Dr. Antniu, the limited findings are nt entirely surprising. N ne wuld say that learning a new language fr six mnths wuld be the same as having used tw languages fr yur entire life. But he des think that language lessns can prvide cgnitive benefits by being cgnitively stimulating.
Perhaps mre imprtant, Prf. Grssman said, learning anther language ffers ther ptential advantages, like traveling r cnnecting with new cmmunities. My father, fr example, has remained pen friends with his first teacher and traveled t France numerus times.
And at 76, he’s as sharp as ever.
    12. What happens in the prcess f “cgnitive inhibitin”?
    A. Memry imprves.B. Brain health wrsens.
    C. Dementia is cured.D. Native language is held back.
    13. Which is a pssible explanatin fr the disappinting research results?
    A. The pr chice f research participants.
    B. The great length f the language curse.
    C. The interventin f the first language.
    D. The age difference f the research subjects.
    14. Whse pinin des the authr supprt by mentining his father’s experience?
    A. Le Antniu’s.B. Diana Smith’s.
    C. Laura Grssman’s.D. Judith Ware’s.
    15. Which f the fllwing is a suitable title fr the text?
    A. Is it never t late t learn a new language?
    B. Can learning a new language delay dementia?
    C. Why des my father start learning a new language?
    D. Hw des learning a new language benefit aging brain?

I was ding hmewrk with my friend Ollie at his hme when he randmly started scribbling (乱画) a fish. But nt just any fish. This fish was riding a skatebard and blwing a bubble that said “I’d rather be skating!”I laughed and drew a sea star saying “Quit fling arund and get t wrk!”
Just then, Ollie’s grandma Abuela and her friend Mr. Gldberg came int the kitchen. Mr. Gldberg was in charge f the lcal animal shelter. Ollie drew a sad whale, and I wrte the wrds “Please adpt me” in the shape f a whale sput (喷水). Mr. Gldberg tk a lk at ur drawings and made favrable cmments n them, saying that these clever talking animals just might grab peple’s attentin. And he asked us if we were willing t design a pster fr his animal shelter, a prpsal we happily accepted. We decided t draw sme ideas n ur wn and meet up again the next afternn.
That night, when I was sitting in the living rm brainstrming ideas fr the pster, my little brther brught in ur hamster, Mr. Nibbles, t give him a little run-arund time. He made a hamster playgrund ut f cuch pillws and Mr. Nibbles began t run arund merrily.
Suddenly, an idea frmed in my mind.
