Several years ag, I read abut William Helmreich walking every street in New Yrk City. I thught, “I can d that fr Mntreal.” With little hesitatin, I devted the next five years f my life t the prject.
I never walked thrugh any shabby （破旧的） neighbrhds. Frm ne end f my map t the ther, all huses were well lked after. Peple went t great lengths t decrate their hmes, and with this came ne f the great pleasures f my walks: the different measures they tk t decrate their frntage （正面）. I discvered that pigs are a ppular decrative element thrughut the city. The type that is dressed up as humans, I mean. I saw pigs wearing dresses, shirts and even swimming cstumes.
Every uting has its wnders. Never assume a neighbrhd has little f interest t ffer. Yu must be trained t seek ut strange things. Otherwise, yu might never spt the clthes n the sidewalks. If I stpped t cllect everything I saw lying arund abandned, I culd fit ut a small cuntry. Where did they cme frm? Hw did peple lse their shes while walking ut? A puzzle.
As my prject prgressed, I felt like I wned the city. I culd get ff at any subway statin and my feet remembered the rute t the best shps. There was enugh fun in my walks that I’d have a few laughs and feel mre light-hearted than when I left.

It was a quiet early afternn in the library, and we librarians were enjying a chat at the library desk. Suddenly, a regular reader, wh had been reading a magazine, marched up t us, gave us an annyed “Shush （嘘）!” and went back t her seat.

Well, it seems hard t explain. If yu’re a baby bmer （婴儿潮出生的人） like me, yu prbably remember libraries as places f adults’ silent reading. These days, hwever, libraries are mre like busy cmmunity centers, where being nisy t sme degree is the new nrmal, especially when kids are taking part.
I am a lud librarian. My vice is naturally n the luder side. The hundreds f prgrams I led as a children’s librarian were filled with singing, dancing, mvement exercises and cheerful readings f bks with crwds f children and their caregivers. N shushing allwed!
Grwing knwledge abut the imprtance f kids and teens learning thrugh hands-n experiences has since caused a sea change in hw public libraries cnnect with yung readers. These types f prgrams like bard games. petry reading and stry times certainly aren’t designed t be silent.
But it’s a balancing act. Nt all readers —r librarians —like the idea f a nisy library. It’s clear t me nw that n the day my clleagues and I were shushed by a reader, we shuld have been using ur “library vices” as we talked. Still, it’s unlikely that libraries will ever return t the days when they were places f silence. There’s just t much fun and learning happening. I heartily agree with my friend Rachel Payne, an early-childhd service educatr at the Brklyn Public Library, wh tld me, “When I visit a library and it is quiet, I always feel a bit sad. Fr nw the team f scientists at the University f Oxfrd is fcusing n making jet fuel fr the aviatin （航空） industry. As the aviatin industry releases ver 900 millin tns f CO2 every year, t battle climate change, it is necessary t turn the tide. S far aviatin scientists have tried t use ther energy resurces like electricity t fly. But such flights are limited t shrt distances. Fr lng-distance flights, there is n alternative yet.
The cncept f turning CO2 int jet fuel is nt new. Previusly, ther similar methds had t rely n expensive catalysts （催化剂） like cbalt t speed up the chemical reactin. But what Oxfrd scientists suggest is adding a cheap irn-based catalyst and hydrgen t turn CO2 int liquid fuel. As the prcess wuld nt require using fssil fuel, it will make the industry carbn neutral （碳中和的）.
The scientists tested the new catalyst in a lab at 300℃ and at 10 times the air pressure at sea level. The entire prcess tk 20 hurs and turned 38 percent f CO2 int new chemicals. Abut 48 percent f the chemicals were jet fuel hydrcarbn and the rest were ther by-prducts that are used in the prductin f plastic.
