Frm the mment we wake up and check the messages n ur smartphnes, we’re expsed t text design. Thrughut ur day, strefrnts and websites annunce themselves thrugh the typefaces(字体) they use. Adnian Chan, a 33-year-ld Hng Kng graphic designer, calls the different texts a “visual landscape”.
In his hmetwn, signs written in traditinal Chinese characters can be fund arund every crner. One calligraphy style, abve all, has cme t represent Hng Kng: Beiwei Kaishu, which has its rigins in 4th-century China. After Wrld War Ⅱ, Beiwei Kaishu was used widely in Hng Kng signs, partly because it is highly recgnizable, even frm far distances.
But with the appearance f LED signs and cmputer-generated typefaces, signs written in the style were disappearing frm Hng Kng. As a result, few designers wrking tday are aware f the Beiwei Kaishu style.
In 2016, Chan asked a master f calligraphy in Hng Kng t teach him t write in the Beiwei Kaishu style. He then started the prcess f digitizing the characters. He first wrte the characters n paper with a brush and ink. Next, he made a pencil sketch. Finally, he recreated the characters digitally, using a cmputer prgram called Glyphs.
One f the main challenges when digitizing the ancient calligraphy is striking a balance between the artistic expressin and the need f design, says Chan. He can cmplete tw characters a day, depending n their cmplexity, and is aiming t digitize 6,000 characters.
Chan says his prject is mre than preserving a centuries-ld writing style and that he sees himself as building n the wrk f previus generatins. He has named his typeface Beiwei Zansyu and hpes it will eventually be installed n phnes and cmputers.

A new study suggests classic paintings by well-knwn Impressinists Jseph Turner and Claude Mnet may have been influenced by air pllutin during the Industrial Revlutin.
The study, published in Prceedings f the Natinal Academy f Sciences by authrs frm Harvard and Srbnne universities, analyzed 60 il paintings by Turner frm 1796 t 1850 and 38 paintings by Mnet frm 1864 t 1901.

Paintings dne in Britain generally feature a paler blue sky than ther wrks in ther parts f the cntinent. Generally, artists can histrically accurately represent their envirnment, s Turner and Mnet were chsen because they are famus fr their landscape and cityscape paintings and als because they were active during the Industrial Revlutin, when air pllutin grew at a rate never seen befre.
Additinally, researchers say that as the air in Lndn and Paris became mre plluted, the cities wuld appear hazier(模糊的) t the eyes as well as in phtgraphs. B. Scientists fcused n studying weather patterns.
    C. Artists always intended t present envirnment.
    D. Britain suffered frm air pllutin mst in Eurpe.
    31. What is the text mainly abut?

    B. Air pllutin makes itself a theme in Impressinist painting.
