Over the years, peple had tld Ruth that her mther's calligraphy was at an artist's level, first- rate classical. This was the piecewrk that earned her a reliable reputatin, and Ruth had had a rle in that success: she checked the spelling f the English wrds.
" It's ‘ grapefruit',” eight- year- ld Ruth nce said,“ nt‘ grapeft’. It's fruit nt aft.”
That night, Lu Ling started teaching her the mechanic s f writing Chinese.“ Watch,” Lu Ling rdered her in Chinese. She selected a brush frm the dzens hanging with their tips dwn. Ruth's sleepy eyes tried t fllw her mther's hand as she wiped the brush with ink, then held it nearly vertically(垂直) t the page, her wrist and elbw in midair. Finally she began, mving her wrist slightly s that her hand waved and dipped like a mth ver the gleam f white paper. Sn the spidery images frmed.
Sme night s Lu Ling fund ways t help Ruth remember the characters.“ Each radical(偏旁部首) cmes frm an ld picture frm a lng time ag.” She made a hrizntal strke and asked Ruth if she culd see what the picture was. Rut h lked and shk her head. Lu Ling made the identical strke, then again and again, asking each time if Ruth knew what it was. Finally, her mther let ut a snrt, signalling her disappintment and disgust.
“ This line is like a beam f light. Lk, can yu see it r nt?”
T Ruth, the line lked like a sparerib(小排骨) picked clean f meat.
She drew mre lines — dts and dashes, dwnstrkes and upstrkes, bends and hks. " D yu see this?” she said ver and ver as if she wanted t bump the Chinese gears(传动装置) f her daughter's mind int actin.

Shuld humans kill members f ne bird species t help prtect anther? That's the questin scientists and cnservatinists are struggling with right nw in the Pacific Nrthwest.
In a bi d t save nrthern sptted wls frm extinctin, the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service(USFWS) has suggested shting mre than 470,000 barred wls ver the next 30 years. The prpsal— which is still a draft and will remain pen fr public cmment— has drawn criticism frm sme wildlife cnservatinists and highlights the difficulties land manager s face while trying t maintain the delicate balance f ecsystems.
Sptted wls and barred wls are clsely related. But nly sptted wls are native t the Pacific Nrthwest. Barred wls, an alien species, have slwly cme t dminate the regin ver the last century. Their larger size, mre generalist nature and faster reprductin rate have prepared them t ut cmpete sptted wls, whse numbers have drpped by rughly 75 percent ver the last 20years, accrding t the USFWS.
Bilgists have lng wndered hw t keep the barred wl ppulatin in check. In 2021, scientists published the results f an experiment that invlved killing 2,485 barred wls in five study areas. Over five years, sptted wl survival rates increased by an average f 10 percent at the sites. But t truly recver, sptted wls might need mre than five years, because they are slw t reprduce. That's the driving factr behind the agency's recently prpsed lng- term management plan.
Cnservatinists have mixed feelings abut the plan. While they understand that science may supprt killing barred wls, they wrry abut the mral inference f killing ff members f ne species t save anther. Bb Sallinger, executive directr f the nnprfit Bird Cnservatin Oregn, says,“ We dn't think it's mral because they are currently ding better in the existing envirnment.” He describes it as a n- win situatin that humans have“ created fr urselves.
“ Rather than chsing t cnserve ne bird ver the ther, this is abut cnserving twspecies,” says Kessina Lee, supervisr f the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service ffice in Oregn.“ Sptted wls are fighting fr their existence right nw. Hwever, even if the service was able t remve that number f barred wls ver the next 30 years, that wuld represent less than 1 percent f the glbal ppulatin f barred wls.”
28. Why is the USFWS prpsing the lng- term plan?
A. T d bigraphy research n wls.
B. T rec ver sptted wl's ppulatin.
C. T balance the birth rates f tw wls.
D. T imprve sptted wl's reprductive ability.
29. What is Paragraph 3 mainly abut?
A. The relatinship between tw wls.
B. The utcmes caused by alien species.
C. The alarming situatin f sptted wls.
D. The physical advantages f barred wls.
30. What des the underlined“ it” in Paragraph 5 refer t?
A. The agency's prpsal.
B. Existing envirnment.
C. Cnservatinists' cncern.
D. The c- existence f tw wls.
31. What's Kessina Lee's attitude t the plan?
A. Unclear. B. Dismissive.

Altitudes, landscapes and climates change dramatically as yu mve acrss the glbe, but ne factr remains nearly universal. All f Earth's diversity is blanketed under a blue sky. But why is the sky blue? The explanatin requires a bit f particle physics(粒子物理).
We see blue abve us because f hw light frm the sun interacts with Earth's atmsphere. The visible light cntains a variety f clrs, ranging frm red light t vilet. When all f the clrs are mixed, the light appears white, Marc Chenard, a scientist at the Natinal Weather Service, tld Live Science. But nce the white light traveling frm the sun reaches Earth, sme f the clrs begin t interact with small particles in the atmsphere, he said.
Each clr in the visible light has a different wavelength. Red and range light waves, fr instance, have lnger wavelengths, while blue and vilet light have much shrter wavelengths. It's the shrter wavelengths f light that are mre likely t be scattered(散射) r absrbed and reflected in a different directin by the air particles in Earth's atmsphere, Chenard said. That's what makes the sky blue.
Even thugh vilet light is scattered t, there are a cuple f reasns why we see the sky as mre blue than purple, accrding t Ed Blmer, an astrnmer at the Ryal Observatry Greenwich in the U. K. First, the sun desn't prduce equal illuminatin(亮度) in all clrs; it cntains mre blue light than vilet light, s mre blue light is scattered. Additinally, ur eyes are nt equally respnsive t all clrs, Blmer tld Live Science; they are less sensitive t vilet light.
This preferential scattering f blue light als plays int the clrs f sun rise and sunset. At sunset, as a particular pint is turning farther and farther frm the sun, sunlight must travel farther thrugh the atmsphere t reach yur eyes. By the time the sunlight reaches yu, all f the blue light has been scattered away. As a result, the range, red and yellw wavelengths are all that's left t clr the sunset.
32. The sky is blue because visible lights .
A. interact with air particles
B. travel at different speeds
C. are t clrful t illuminate
D. are reflected by blue ceans
33. Hw des the authr make the explanatin mre accessible?
A. By fllwing rder f space.
B. By picturing different scenes.
C. By giving persnal experience.
D. By quting scientists' pinins.
34. What mainly affects the clrs f sunrise and sunset?
A. The quality f the atmsphere.
B. The easier scattering f blue light.
C. The reflecting directin f the sunlight.
D. The distance between the bserver and the sun.
35. What is the best title fr the passage?
A. Earth's Diversity: A Changeable Factr
B. Atmspheric Circle: A Clrful Blanket
C. The Clr f Sky:A Particle Physics View
D. The Light Scattering:A Clrful Mvement
