Fr the first time, a dnated heart has been flwn 12 hurs and 6,750 kilmeters acrss the Atlantic Ocean and successfully transplanted (移植) int its recipient. It was transprted via a cmmercial airline t Paris, France, marking the first time a dnated heart has flwn acrss the Atlantic.
At the Pitié-Salpêtrière Hspital in Paris, surgen Guillaume Lebretn successfully transplanted the heart int a 70-year-ld man with a heart cnditin. Lebretn called the success “an achievement previusly unimaginable in rgan transplantatin”. It was achieved as part f a pilt study knwn as PEGASE, which aims t establish whether successful transplant is pssible after the heart has been preserved fr lng perids f time — specifically, n jurneys frm Martinique and Guadelupe in the Caribbean.
The heart was preserved using a special technique where a heart is kept cld. While there have been clinical trials explring such a technique, accrding t the surgen, this is the first time it’s been tested fr such extreme transprt times. If the results seen n this ccasin are successfully used in the rest f the study, it’s hped that the technique culd have “the ptential t redefine the landscape f heart transplantatin with unlimited gegraphical prcurement (获取) and lwered time limits”. At present, transplanting hearts is ften a race against time — they generally need t be transplanted within fur hurs f being remved frm a dnr.
Increasing the gegraphical resurces f ptential dnrs culd als have an impact n transplant list waiting times. In the US, fr example, there are arund 3,000 peple n the waiting list fr a heart n any given day, but nly 2,000 hearts are available each year. Depending n qualificatin criteria, sme peple may be waiting fr years; being able t get hearts frm a wider range f places culd cut dwn that time.
“We wanted t make this peratin reprduceable and keep transprt csts bearable,” Lebretn wrte. Unlike cnventinal dnr-heart transprt practices invlving expensive private planes, we flew in the ecnmy lass in a cmmercial airliner.”

A. It fcuses n heart transplantatin.B. It was launched by Lebretn.
C. It ignres treatment fr heart disease.D. It has prved unsuccessful.
9. What is the main prblem with heart transplantatin nw?
A. The chance f success is very lw.B. Transplantatin time is limited
C. There are n qualified dnrs.D. The surgens are inexperienced.

A. T emphasize the rme f hearts.B. T prve the qualificatin f ptential dnrs.
C. T say the impact f a transplant.D. T shw the need fr wider surces f dnrs.
11. What’s Lebretn’s attitude t using cmmercial airhners t transprt dnated hearts?
A. Apprving.B. Dubtful.C. Unclear.D. Indifferent.

This past summer, hundreds f fish in Canada beat the heat in human- made plumes (一股) f cld water. The apprach culd help prtect cld-water species as climate change warms rivers.
Fish can becme stressed r even die when the water gets t ht. In rivers, Atlantic salmn and ther cld-water species smetimes escape the heat by flcking t cler znes. Such chill sites may be fund near grundwater springs r small rivers and streams flwing int larger waterways.

T test the idea, her team pumped (抽送) grundwater frm a nearby well int the Wrights River in Nva Sctia. The grundwater was 9℃. This created an artificial plume f cl water. It was up t 20℃ cler than the surrunding water.
This plume attracted several hundred fish f different life stages and species. These included Atlantic salmn, mst f which were very yung. These small yung fish hung ut in the plume thrughut the test. But when a heat wave raised river temperatures t abut 30℃, lder fish tk shelter in the plume, t.
The team als tried a secnd apprach. They reruted sme water frm the river int an undergrund trench (沟渠). Here, the water cled a bit befre flwing back int the river. This methd cled part f the river withut needing a pump. The water temperature fell by nly a few degrees Celsius this way. But even s, fish were sptted in the cled flw thrughut the summer.
Thugh small, these early tests shw a “prf f cncept”. That means the appraches shw prmise but they aren’t yet ready fr wide use. “Mre wrk lies ahead t decide the needed number f cling site s t really help fish cmmunities,” says Kathryn Smith.
12. What des the underlined wrd “chill” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Rugh.B. Secret.C. Distant.D. Cld.
13. What is the purpse f Smith’s team’s prject?
A. T create cld- water species’ habitat.B. T learn mre abut Atlantic waters.
C. T ffer infrmatin abut climate change.D. T prtect the envirnment arund Atlantic.
14. What des Smith’s team’s prject tell us?
A. The first apprach is much mre practical.B. Pumping cld water culd help fish beat the heat.
C. The artificial plume fails t attract big fish.D. The water temperature f the plume is higher.
15. What shuld Smith’s team figure ut in the future?
A. Hw t help fish avid attack.B. When t make wide use f the appraches.
C. Hw many cling sites are needed.D. Why t make the appraches understandable.
