Sharanya’s rbt has trash and recycling bins and mves with mtrized wheels. The device’s frnt and back have bject-detecting sensrs. One end f the rbt has a rubbish- cllecting mveable arm with a pan t gather bjects and drp them int the trash r recycling bins. It picked up items and accurately classified aluminum cans as recyclables 80 percent f the time. Sharanya is cnfident that the rbt will sn srt plastic and glass by striking the items and detecting the difference in their frequencies.

Renkl acknwledges her desperatin at the human- caused crises the natural wrld faces, and her determinatin nt t stand by. “The very least I we my wild neighbrs is a willingness t witness their struggle, t make up fr their lsses in every way I can, and t speak n their behalf abut all the ways I can’t,” she writes.
Renkl makes gd n that cmmitment. She ensures fallen leaves in her yard are left where they were s that insects verwinter and birds can dine there. She als creates a shelter fr frgs in the frm f a large tank filled with water and frg- friendly plants.

Yur mind’s being drawn away while yu’re engaging in enjyable activities can reduce satisfactin and result in ver- cnsuming everyday pleasures later, accrding t new research.
The study lked at hw distractin affects “hednic cnsumptin”—pleasure-related cnsumptin like buying gds r experiencing cheerful things because they make us feel gd and nt necessarily because we need them. When distracted while ding a pleasant activity, peple are likely t experience less enjyment frm it than if they were fully fcused. That may lead t dissatisfactin and drive mre cnsumptin t cmpensate fr that shrtfall.

After lunch, participants reprted n their actual enjyment, satisfactin, desire fr further satisfactin and amunt cnsumed. They als reprted n their snacking later in the day.
Participants wh ate while distracted reprted lwer enjyment and satisfactin, which was assciated with increased snacking afterward and a mre general desire fr further satisfactin.
The researchers als fllwed 220 participants fr weeks t investigate this brader effect beynd fd. As with the fd-based experiment, they fund when peple were distracted during cnsumptin, they were likely t enjy a prduct less than they hped, feel less satisfied and need further satisfactin.
“Overcnsumptin ften results due t a lack f self-cntrl,” said lead authr Murphy, PhD, f Ghent University. “Hwever, ur findings suggest vercnsumptin may als ften be driven by the simple human desire t reach a certain level f enjyment frm an activity. When distractin gets in the way, it’s likely we may try t cmpensate by cnsuming mre.”
Murphy and his team plan t cnduct mre research t cnfirm the existence f a hednic cmpensatin effect. If it’s cnfirmed, they intend t apply interventins that culd help peple pay mre attentin t their cnsumptin experiences in an effrt t lwer the likelihd f vercnsumptin. “By understanding the key drivers f hednic vercnsumptin, we can develp strategies t prevent its ccurrence,” said Murphy.
    32. What d the underlined wrds “cmpensate fr” mean in paragraph 2?
    A. Add t.B. Lk int.C. Make up fr.D. Put up with.
    33. Participants wh are eating but attracted t vide games tend t ________ sn.
    A. have refreshmentsB. purchase luxuries
    C. watch mre videsD. hang abut with partners
    34. What may be the newly fund driver f vercnsumptin accrding t Murphy?
    A. Divided attentin.B. Addictin t games.
    C. Others’ interventins.D. Lack f self- discipline.
    35. What can be inferred frm the last paragraph?
    A. There exist data errrs in the study.
    B. The study utcmes deserve further prf.
    C. Overcnsumptin will be rted ut in the near future.

    Dear Peter,
I’m writing t share with yu my experience f learning Zngzi- making n this Drag n Bat Festival.
Zngzi is a must fr the festival. T learn hw t make it frm Grandma, I rse early that mrning. Under her patient instructins, I practiced awkwardly. I first flded bamb leaves int a triangle shape, int which I put sme saked rice and ther fillings like beans r salted prk. Then I tied them tightly with a red string t secure the Zngzi. Simple as it lked, it tk me quite a lng time t master it. I was really happy nt t quit halfway. Having been biled in a p t fr a while, the sweet- smelling Zngzi was ready. My family said it tasted s delicius!
I feel prud and excited that I have grasped the skill f making the Chinese traditinal fd. Hw I wish t make it fr yu with my wn hands!
    Yurs,
    Li Hua

“Gary? Is that yu?” Jasn asked, eyes wide in surprise. Gary’s face turned red with embarrassment. “Why are yu wrking here? Why didn’t yu tell me?” Jasn questined, cnfused. “I... srry, Jasn...” Gary hesitantly respnded, attempting t explain. Just then mre custmers pured in, waiting t place their rders. Seeing this, Jasn interrupted Gary and tld him t serve ther custmers first and talk abut it later. Gary ndded thankfully. Watching Gary’s busy figure while seated in a crner, Jasn was lst in thught. It dawned n him that Gary must have had sme truble, fr Gary appeared exhausted and much thinner. Jasn reflected, waiting restlessly.
Having finished his wrk, Gary came up and sat with Jasn. He aplgized fr nt telling Jasn the truth and explained why he wrked there. Attentively listening t what Gary had experienced, Jasn culdn’t cntain his tears, regretting nt having shared his best friend’s truble earlier. He gave Gary a big hug and cmfrted him sincerely, “Gary, cheer up! Everything will be fine. I’ll help yu.” Frm then n, Jasn wuld assist Gary in serving custmers frm time t time. The tw cmpanins withstd setbacks in life tgether, time witnessing their strengthened bnd f friendship.
