Natural selectin is the prcess by which ne type f animal within a species thrives because f certain qualities that make it mre likely t live than thers in its grup. The histry f the peppered mth (灰蛾) is an example f the natural selectin prcess.
In nineteenth-century England, certain types f peppered mths were able t better blend (融合) int their surrundings. During that time perid, great changes were happening in Great Britain. The Industrial Revlutin was part f this change, and with it came air pllutin. Natural selectin ften takes hundreds r even thusands f years t ccur. Fr the peppered mth, this prcess ccurred cmparatively (相对地) quickly.
At the beginning f the Industrial Age, mst peppered mths in England were light-clred and cvered with black markings, althugh a few mths had dark-clred wings. Because the light-clred mths blended int the light-clred bark n the trees, they culd nt be easily seen by birds that wuld eat them. As the air grew mre plluted, hwever, tree trunks became cvered with st (煤烟) and became darker. The light-clred mths became easy fr birds t see against the dark tree trunks. Since the dark-clred mths nw had the advantage, their numbers grew. Within 50 years, the peppered mth went frm being mstly light-clred t being mstly dark-clred.
In the twentieth century, the air cleared up, and the peppered mth ppulatin changed again. As tree trunks lightened due t less st in the air, light-clred mths nce again had an advantage. China is facing similar prblems. The drught has dried up much f the water in the Yangtze, China’s lngest river. That has cut the amunt f energy prduced by the wrld’s largest dam by 40%.

In mst twns tday, yu can see teenagers standing ver electrnic machines with flashing lights, shting at spaceships frm ther planets and drpping bmbs n strange mnsters(恶魔). The machines have names like Space Warrir, Dark Invader and s n. It used t be believed that damage was dne nly t thse strange visitrs frm uter space, but nw it seems that they are striking back.
Many teenagers like electrnic games s much that they can’t stp playing. They spend hurs tightly hlding the jystick (操纵杆) cntrls and cnstantly (不断地) pressing buttns marked “fire”. They develp pains n their fingers because f the cnstant pressure. They play and play that the pains have n chance t cure prperly. The rapid wrist (手腕) mvement required t guide the spaceship acrss the screen causes anther prblem: The muscles f the wrist and arm becme s inflamed (发炎的) and swllen (肿胀的) that they press against the bnes. This cnditin is what dctrs nw call “Space Warrir’s Wrist”.

Anther even mre alarming prblem is shwn by the case f a 17-year-ld girl which was recently reprted in the British Medical Jurnal. She had been playing varius kinds f electrnic games fr mre than tw hurs a day. Her father repaired games and machines and she culd use the systems in his wrkshp as ften as she liked. One day, after playing a game called Dark Invader, she passed ut and fell t the flr.

Natural selectin is the prcess by which ne type f animal within a species thrives because f certain qualities that make it mre likely t live than thers in its grup. The histry f the peppered mth (灰蛾) is an example f the natural selectin prcess.
In nineteenth-century England, certain types f peppered mths were able t better blend (融合) int their surrundings. During that time perid, great changes were happening in Great Britain. The Industrial Revlutin was part f this change, and with it came air pllutin. Natural selectin ften takes hundreds r even thusands f years t ccur. Fr the peppered mth, this prcess ccurred cmparatively (相对地) quickly.
At the beginning f the Industrial Age, mst peppered mths in England were light-clred and cvered with black markings, althugh a few mths had dark-clred wings. Because the light-clred mths blended int the light-clred bark n the trees, they culd nt be easily seen by birds that wuld eat them. As the air grew mre plluted, hwever, tree trunks became cvered with st (煤烟) and became darker. The light-clred mths became easy fr birds t see against the dark tree trunks. Since the dark-clred mths nw had the advantage, their numbers grew. Within 50 years, the peppered mth went frm being mstly light-clred t being mstly dark-clred.
In the twentieth century, the air cleared up, and the peppered mth ppulatin changed again. As tree trunks lightened due t less st in the air, light-clred mths nce again had an advantage. Their numbers increased as st levels declined (下降). Depending n their envirnment, the clratin f the mths helped them t be “naturally selected” t survive.

Farmers in Califrnia and Arizna have been hit particularly hard. Califrnia has put limits n water use acrss the state. Nw water is being limited in ther places. When there are water limits, farmers aren’t able t grw as many crps. That can drive up fd prices, and that affects everyne.
China is facing similar prblems. The drught has dried up much f the water in the Yangtze, China’s lngest river. That has cut the amunt f energy prduced by the wrld’s largest dam by 40%.
China hasn’t been able t prduce enugh energy, since millins f peple are using electricity t keep cl. The gvernment is calling n the public t turn ff the air cnditiner when it is nt t ht. The cuntry is trying t make it rain by shting chemicals int cluds. But this is an uncertain and temprary respnse.
There are n easy slutins t any f these drughts. It tk years t create the climate crisis, and it will take a lng time t get it under cntrl. Fr nw, gvernments and peple will need t carefully manage water supplies and ther resurces t limit the damage as much as pssible.
