A new frm f real estate is ppping up alng the beaches f Suth Africa, which are just big enugh t fit a family f African penguins. Their unique selling pint: a safe and cl place fr penguins t breed (繁殖).
Histrically, the penguins dug hles in layers f guan (鸟粪), but in the 19th century, traders started selling guan as fertilizer, leaving the penguins and their eggs increasingly expsed t predatrs (捕食者) and the burning sun. This has caused African penguin ppulatins t decrease. That’s why cnservatinists have cme t the rescue with the African Penguin Nest Prject (APNP), which aims t emply artificial nests t prvide penguin parents a safe and shaded place t raise their chicks.
While guan trade petered ut by the late 1800s, recreating the layers that accumulated ver thusands f years isn’t an ptin, because seabird ppulatins have declined s much ver time and it wuld take arund 600 years t prduce ne usable guan layer. Hence, the prject decided t build artificial nests. At first glance, they lk fairly simple--a dmed structure made frm tw mlded shells f fabric cated in ceramic slurry (陶瓷浆料),with a small entrance measuring abut 20 centimeters wide.
Getting the right temperature and dampness inside the nest was the tughest and mst crucial part. The tw-layer design and ventilatin hles (通风孔) create an air cnditining effect, while the white paint reflects the sun, helping t maintain an interir temperature f less than 35 degrees Celsius.
The prject started t use the nests in late 2018.“Within a matter f minutes, penguins were running int them,” says Graham, crdinatr f APNP. “That tells yu hw desperate they are fr any pprtunity t find a safe place t nest. Hwever, ppulatin recvery relies n mre than merely giving African penguins a safe place t breed. It’s nt simply a case f ‘we give them a nest, the species are saved ‘. There has t be mre.”

30.What des the underlined phrase “petered ut” in Paragraph 3 prbably mean?
A.turned upB.dried utC.faded awayD.fell apart

C.Artificial nests have achieved the desired effect.
D.Artificial nests shuld be applied t ther species.

Gelinne lked up just in time t see a small aircraft a few hundred yards away, lsing altitude.
根据第二段中“He fled the chas but has always wndered if he culd have stayed inside and helped. “T the right was the crisis, and t the left was escape. I dn’t even knw if I culd’ve gne right, but I went left,” he recalled. 故选A项。
根据第三段中“He tested the ice with his ft and decided nt t risk walking n it. Then he and his sn, Jhn J., 37, pulled ut tw kayaks (橡皮船). 然后,他和37岁的儿子Jhn J拉出了两艘皮划艇)”和第五段中“With his sn nearby, Gelinne fcused n keeping the pilt calm, jking, “Just hang n t the bat as if yu were hugging yur wife.”
根据最后一段中“Still, he was satisfied he’d gne the right way that day.

由文章第四段中“The tw-layer design and ventilatin hles (通风孔) create an air cnditining effect, while the white paint reflects the sun, helping t maintain an interir temperature f less than 35 degrees Celsius.
由文章第二段中“That’s why cnservatinists have cme t the rescue with the African Penguin Nest Prject (APNP), which aims t emply artificial nests t prvide penguin parents a safe and shaded place t raise their chicks.
由文章第三段中的“recreating the layers that accumulated ver thusands f years isn’t an ptin, because seabird ppulatins have declined s much ver time and it wuld take arund 600 years t prduce ne usable guan layer. A. turned up出现;B. dried ut干涸;C. faded away逐渐消失;D. fell apart分崩离析。故选C项。
由文章最后一段“The prject started t use the nests in late 2018.“Within a matter f minutes, penguins were running int them,” says Graham, crdinatr f APNP.
D篇32.A 33.C 34.B 35.D
文章第一段“Jsefa Marin went t New Yrk frm Mexic in 1987, supprting her daughter back hme with the $140 a week she earned at a sweater factry. With that small incme, she had t cllect recyclables, trading in cans fr five cents each. 和第二段“When the clthing factry clsed dwn in the late 2000s, she became a full-time recycler, picking up cans and bttles t make ends meet. Millins arund the wrld make a living frm picking thrugh waste and reselling it — a vital rle that keeps waste manageable. In New Yrk City, the administrative department cllects nly abut 28 percent f the cans that culd be recycled. Rubbish cllectrs keep millins f additinal recyclables ut f landfills every year. 故选A项。
根据第四段“Yet cllectrs are ruled ut by gvernment plicies. The United States Supreme Curt in 1988 stated that husehld garbage is public prperty nce it’s n the street. That enables plice t search rubbish fr evidence, but that prtectin hasn’t always been extended t recyclers. And in places like New Yrk City, which is testing city-wned lcked cntainers t hide garbage frm rats, cntainers are made clearly inaccessible fr cllectrs.
根据第六段中“Marin recalls an ccasin when smene living next t a building where she was cllecting cans threw water at her. “It desn’t mean I am less f a persn than anyne else because I recycle”, she says.
通读全文,结合最后一段中“Sme gvernments are starting t realize that prtecting the envirnment and humanity g hand in hand.

39.根据上文“It may be explained by the fact that they're a natural sund and natural sunds are psychlgically beneficial(这也许可以解释为它们是一种自然的声音,而自然的声音在心理上是有益的)”可知,接下来应进一步说明其带来的好处,G选项“The benefits include increased learning capacity and reduced anxiety(好处包括提高学习能力和减少焦虑)”符合文意,故选G项。
40.根据下文“Different sunds will bring ut different respnses depending n the individual(不同的声音会根据个人产生不同的反应)”可知,可知,雨声对不同的人可能产生不同的效果,有些人可能觉得雨声有助于放松,而对另一些人则可能引起担忧或其他反应,E选项“Rain sunds might help smene, but they're nt fr everyne(雨声可能对某些人有帮助,但并非对每个人都适用)”能够引出下文,故选E项。
