Jianzhng Liu, a gechemist at the CAS Institute f Gechemistry in Guiyang and c-leader f the prject, says that existing Mn maps date frm the 1960s and 1970s. “The US Gelgical Survey used data frm the Apll missins t create a number f gelgical maps f the Mn, including a glbal map at the scale f 1:5,000,000 and sme reginal, higher-accuracy nes near the landing sites,” he says. “Since then, ur knwledge f the Mn has advanced greatly, and thse maps culd n lnger meet the needs fr future lunar research and explratin.”
The atlas used data frm China’s lunar explratin prgramme, especially the Chang’e -1 missin’s bservatin f lunar tpgraphy (地形) and gelgical structures, accrding t Liu. Observatins made n the Mn’s surface by the Chang’e -3 and Chang’e -4 lander missins in 2013 and 2019, respectively, helped t cnfirm the accuracy f the Chang’e -1 data. The atlas team als used data frm missins such as the GRAIL and the Lunar Recnnaissance Orbiter, bth launched by NASA, and India’s Chandrayaan-1 prbe.
