Phil Wise’s heart raced as he pened ne f the transprt tubes. He and a team f scientists stepped back as a yung Tasmanian devil(袋獾) named Oddity came ut. Oddity tk a cautius lk arund and then ran int the frest n Maria Island.
Wise is a wildlife bilgist frm the Save the Tasmanian Devil Prgram. The scientists wrking with this prgram study Tasmanian devils, mnitr their health, and track the devils fund in the wild. Because a rare disease is reducing the number f devils, Oddity and 14 thers were raised n a preserve and then brught t Maria Island t be released int the wild.
Thugh they are raised in zs all ver the wrld, devils live wild nly in Tasmania. They are imprtant t the ecsystem because they eat dead animals they find, which helps clean up the envirnment. But a cancer called Devil Facial Tumr Disease (DFTD) is killing devils n mainland Tasmania, endangering the species. The gal f the scientists wh released Oddity and the thers was t create a ppulatin f disease-free Tasmanian devils n Maria Island. Oddity is a part f this “insurance ppulatin” f devils raised in zs and wildlife preserves.
The scientists chse Maria Island fr the release because there is n DFTD there. It is separated frm mainland Tasmania by the cean. Devils frm the rest f Tasmania can’t get there, which prevents the facial disease frm spreading.
Wise and his fellw scientists mnitred Oddity and the 14 ther Tasmanian devils. The animals did s well that 13 mre devils were released. The 28 riginal Tasmanian devils have reprduced; there are nw arund 80 devils. Scientists are nw figuring ut their next mve. Accrding t Wise, the fcus will sn shift t mving sme f the healthy devils back t mainland Tasmania.

Currently, ne f the biggest prblems in Las is underfunded educatin-the gvernment lacks mney t build and maintain schls and pay teachers, which, f curse, hlds back teaching and learning. Despite this, Las still prduces quite a few graduates with valuable skills such as knwing Chinese, English, Krean, r Japanese. The prblem is nt the students.
Nr des the prblem stem frm a lack f financial means: Las has enrmus wealth. The prblem is that this wealth is nt financing a prper system f educatin. Lcal crruptin(腐败)means that the wealthy d nt pay taxes. Las needs a transparent tax system that functins nrmally, as in mre develped cuntries such as Malaysia. Las can learn several lessns frm Malaysia’s successful taxatin strategies.
Last year, Malaysian students scred exceptinally well n standardized tests in a wide variety f subjects. Hwever, La students scred very prly, especially in math. The 2022 standardized test scres fr Las were the lwest in Asia. Such a terrible result cnstitutes an emergency. Yung peple are nt adequately educated in Las, and the main cause is a catastrphic lack f funding due t tax avidance.
Therefre, I prpse that a ttal change be made in the tax system f Las. This step is crucial because Las is a member f ASEANN, and the basic supprt fr educatin needs t be cmparable amng the member natins. Las has always lagged behind ther ASEAN member states n this issue f supprt fr educatin as a percentage f GDP. Experts estimate that Las will nly spend 3.2% f its GDP n educatin in 2023.
T cnclude, I must emphasize that La educatin is in crisis. Fr many years, their educatin system has been underfunded as a percentage f GDP cmpared with ther ASEAN cuntries, and standardized test scres are upsetting. If La educatin can becme adequately funded, La students will step up and cmpete with their peers acrss Asia.
8.What is the best title f this passage?
    A. Educatin in Las:Challenges and Opprtunities.

    D. Prblems in Las: Misbehaving students and Lw-tax system.
9.Accrding t paragraph 3, what caused La students’ pr perfrmance?
    A. Students’ lw intelligence.B. The imprper tax system.
    C. Unqualified math teachers.D. Unfair academic cmpetitins.
10.Which f the fllwing is true accrding t the text?
    A. In 2023, nly 3. 2% f the Las’ GDP will be used n educatin.
    B. Rich peple in Las pay much mre taxes than the pr peple.
    C. The La gvernment desn’t pay enugh attentin t educatin.
    D. ASEAN member states supprt Las t prmte its educatin.
11.What’s the authr’s attitude twards educatin in Las?
    A. IndifferentB. CncernedC. SympatheticD. Neutral
Yu prbably get yur eyes tested t prtect yur sight, maybe have a yearly hearing test t check yur ears—but, prtecting yur nse... eh? Recent research has discvered mre than 600 genes in the human bdy assciated with the sense f smell and that it’s actually imprtant t the human bdy.
Smell can help keep us alive by warning us f dangers such as fd that might make us sick r the threat f fire, and it des this within nly 100-150 millisecnds f breathing. “Smell als helps create the flavur f fd and plays a rle in cntrlling the variety f ur diet and the nutrients we cnsume,” says Jeanne Hrt, a prfessr at News Zealand’s Massey University.
In fact, each f us has a unique sense f smell and the strength f ur unique smell is related t the genes yu inherit (遗传) frm yur parents which determine which smell receptrs (感受器) are expressed in the nse. Other factrs further determine hw sensitive yur sense f smell is. Wmen generally have a strnger sense f smell than men, while damage frm air pllutin means peple wh live in highly plluted cities have a less sensitive sense f smell than thse in rural areas. “We als knw the sense f smell declines with age,” says Prfessr Hrt. “And if yu’ve damaged yur nse thrugh head injury, illness r breathing in smething that causes pain and discmfrt, yur sense f smell can als be negatively affected.”
Prtecting yur nse frm such damage is therefre the first step in activating yur sense f smell. Avid breathing in strng scents like chemicals. Then, keep yur nse busy. Fr example, sniff (唉) vegetables and fruit as part f determining ripeness befre yu buy them and sniff mre different smells expsed t yur nse. “The sense f smell is a bit like a muscle, yu can train it t becme strnger by exercising it,” says sensry expert Eugeni Rura.
12.Why des the authr mentin eye and ear prtectin in paragraph 1?
    A. T cmpare different human senses.B. T call attentin t the sense f smell.
    C. T clarify the cncept f gd health.D. T shw the imprtance f medical exams.
    13.What des paragraph 2 fcus n?
    A. The advice n healthy eating.B. The basic functins f the nse.
    C. The imprtant rle f smell in life.D. The ways t avid hidden dangers.
14.Which f the fllwing wuld the authr mst prbably agree with?
    A. There is sex difference in terms f smell.B. The sense f smell desn’t change with age.
    C. Smell receptrs decide the strength f smell.D. Air pllutin is very likely t cause lss f smell.
15.What des the qute frm Eugeni Rura imply?
    A. It is essential t prtect yur nse frm damage.
    B. Different parts f yur bdy smetimes wrk the same.
    C. Sniffing different smells helps t build up yur strength.
    D. The mre yu use the sense f smell, the mre yu sharpen it.
