A Big Questin: Can Explsive Ideas Start Small?
Cai Gu-Qiang seeks grandness with emptiness
There’s s much in this life that we cannt cntrl, s expressing yur thughts and ideas and ideals naturally can ease ur state f mind. I lk fr the infinite within the very small. This is hw the ancient Chinese experienced paintings and the aesthetic (美学的) experience. 36 It culd be smething that they hide in secret until it’s time t be displayed.
In the mdern living rm, yu will display a wrk f art n the wall—yur huse may be full f different artwrks that yu can see and enjy. 37 This is their museum—their cllectin. Over a cnversatin, the hst will see where yur interests lie and determine if yu are wrthy f a certain wrk—a painting f a Chinese landscape r calligraphy—and unrll a scrll in frnt f yu, pening a whle wrld up t yu. 38 Sharing an artwrk with guests and friends is als the way the hst experiences a wrk.
This is perhaps a bit ppsed t what I lk fr in my wrk. I lk fr smething grand in scale, but I als lk fr that emptiness t. 39 After the viewing, it’s rlled up and it’s empty again; but this emptiness als hlds endless pssibilities. Smetimes I cnsider my explsin prjects like these scrlls. 40 What yu hld in yur mind is a wrld that’s limitless. Art desn’t need t be verified. It desn’t have t lk like anything. Anything is pssible.
    —— Cai Gu-Qiang
Once it pens up the universe and arund that, it seems bundless, but then it disappears.
In the traditinal Chinese hme, nthing decrates the walls, but next t the chair where the hst will sit, there may be a large china vase with rlled scrlls sticking ut.
The huse r the wall becmes the hme t the artwrks cllected by the hst, which culd be a painting, a pster, a prtrait, etc.
In a way, the scrll is an essence f that emptiness.
It is nly shwn t peple at the apprpriate time and ccasin, and t the right persn.
Then, that grandness unflded as a scrll unrlled.
Instead f these very large public displays that fill up a space, it tends t be quite small and persnal.
