Petersn’s cnnectin with Faris 17 him t frm Faces f Santa Ana, an rganizatin fcused n painting prtraits f the unhused. He sells the 18 , putting the mney int a “lve accunt” fr his mdels. He then helps them use the mney t get back n their feet.

Radajere Oleita thinks she may have a slutin fr tw f ur cuntry’s cntinuus prblems: rubbish and pverty ( 贫穷 ). Her slutin is called the Chip Bag Prject. The 26-year-ld student and envirnmentalist frm Detrit is asking a favr f lcal snack lvers, “Rather than thrw yur empty chip (薯片) bags int the bin, dnate them s I can turn them int sleeping bags fr the hmeless” .
Chip eaters drp ff their empty bags frm Drits, Lay’s, and ther favrites at tw lcatins in Detrit: a print shp and a clthing stre, where Oleita and her vlunteer helpers cllect them. After they clean the chip bags in sapy ht water, they cut them pen, lay them flat, and irn (熨) them tgether. They use padding (补丁) and liners frm ld cats t line the insides.
It takes abut fur hurs t make a sleeping bag, and each takes arund 150 t 300 chip bags, depending n whether they’re small r family size. The result is a sleeping bag that is “waterprf, lightweight, and easy t carry arund,” Oleita tld the Detrit News. Since its start in 2020, the Chip Bag Prject has cllected mre than 800,000 chip bags and, as f last December, created 110 sleeping bags.
Sure, it wuld be simpler t raise the mney t buy new sleeping bags fr the hmeless. But that’s nly half the gal fr Oleita—whse family mved t the United States frm Nigeria 30 years ag with the hpe f getting a better life —and her vlunteers. “We are wrking hard t make a difference nt nly scially, but als envirnmentally,” she says.
And, f curse, there’s the symblic meaning f saving bags which wuld therwise land in the rubbish and using them t help the hmeless. It’s a pwerful reminder that envirnmental unfair treatment and pverty ften g hand in hand. As Oleita tld hurdetrit.cm: “I think it’s time t shw cnnectins between all f these prblems.”

23.What can we learn frm the passage?

Why g t all the truble f building a drne if nature has already dne the jb fr yu? That is the attitude taken by researchers wh are trying t
rbtise insects. Sme are wrking n turning flying insects int cybrgs (机械化有机体). Others prefer t fcus n sme small insects, by taking electrnic cntrl f cckraches.
The first cyber-rach (半机械蟑螂) ges back t 1997, when Shimyama Isa f Tky University sent electrical signals t a cckrach’s antennae, causing it t turn either left r right depending n which antenna was stimulated
(刺激). Others have built n this methd by using ther parts f their bdies. They have als
begun fitting the insects with instrument packs that might let them d a useful jb: searching destryed buildings fr survivrs.
One such is Sat Hirtaka f Nanyang Technlgical University, in Singapre. He has been wrking n cyber-insects fr 15 years. Nw, he has made anther change t cyber-raches. Instead f having their mvements perated by a cntrller, his are run by cmputer prgrammes that react directly t build-in sensrs in their backpacks. The backpacks cntain a cmmunicatins chip, a CO2 sensr, a mtin sensr, a camera and a tiny battery.
Fr search-and-save peratins in destryed buildings, grups f these cyber-raches wuld be sent int the remains, t search fr signs f life such as mvement and high CO2
levels frm breathing. The AI that decides whether a set f signals actually shw the presence f a human being is prgrammed directly int the camera. If it thinks it has sptted smene, it warns savirs.
T test this, Dr Sat and his team ran trials in a man-made disaster zne. They laid ut pieces f destryed buildings in varius shapes and sizes in an area f 25m2. There were several peple amng them, as well as things that can mislead the cyber-raches. After prgramming the start and finish pints f the search, they sent the cyber-raches ut. It is prved that they are able t recgnise humans crrectly 87% f the time, a success number Dr Sat thinks culd be imprved still further by cllecting many images frm different sides.
The next step f the prject is t imprve the system fr utdrs use. That dne, prducts f the backpacks will be put int markets within five years.
24.What can we learn abut Dr Sat’s cyber-raches?
A. They are run by cmputer prgrammes.
B. They use antennae t receive signals.
C. They can d mre jbs than drnes.
D. They are perated by a cntrller.
25.Hw did Dr Sat test his cyber-raches?
A. He stimulated the cckraches ’ antennae.
B. He prgrammed the chips in the cckraches ’ bdies.
C. He sent them t the man-made remains t search fr life.
D. He set the start and finish pints t mislead the cckraches.
26.Accrding t the passage, what des Dr Sat’s think f cyber-raches?
A. Cckraches are prved t be future savirs.
B. They will be widely used utdrs within five years.
C. Cckraches fllw instructins better than ther insects.
D. They can recgnise lives better by cllecting mre images.

When I was rganizing my clthes, I accidentally fund a set f Hanfu I nly wre nce. Since a Chinese friend gave me a set f ancient-style hair accessries ( 配饰), I matched a
whle set f Hanfu. Then, ancient-style articles appeared in my clthes ne after anther. When I saw them again, I thught f a sentence: I may have been caught by the “birdcage ( 鸟笼) effect” !
“Birdcage effect (BCE)” is ne f the tp ten psychlgical ( 心理的 ) prblems that human beings cannt easily deal with. BCE means that when yu get smething ne day, yu will prbably prepare mre things t match it. There is a stry behind it. One day, James, a psychlgist, jked with his friend Carlsn and predicted that Carlsn wuld surely raise a bird. At first, Carlsn didn’t care. When James gave Carlsn a birdcage n his birthday, friends wh visited Carlsn’s huse believed that he had raised birds. During that prcess, Carlsn kept explaining. In the end he really bught a bird. Like Carlsn, many peple have been r are being caught in the BCE.
My friend Tinny said she wanted t buy a gd pen t match a pretty ntebk her sister gave her. I jked that she must have been caught in the BCE. But my friend said with a smile: “Why nt use the ‘birdcage effect ’ instead? When I have a beautiful ntebk, I will want t buy a pen that is smth and easy t write, and next I will want t buy a bk I like, and then start t take ntes.”
Fr the first time, I heard that the BCE culd be used in reverse. Hwever, this reminded me f my middle schl days, and I seemed t have used the BCE. One day, I bught a magazine and saw the call fr writings published in the magazine, s I started writing. After that, I bught a beautiful ntebk t recrd my feelings. Mre and mre magazines appeared in my study, and my interest fr writing increased.
Hw can we stp being caught in the BCE in many things and even use it? Varius “birdcages” unavidably appear in life, but we can divide them. If it is nt in line with the actual situatin, it is a “negative birdcage”, s we must learn t stp lsses in time. If it is a “psitive birdcage” that drives us t develp upward, we can clear ur gals up and encurage urselves t mve twards ur gals. At this time, we will find that the BCE is actually nt s terrible!
27.Why des the writer talk abut Hanfu in Paragraph 1?
A. T describe her life styleB. T explain the rigin f BCE
C. T intrduce Chinese cultureD. T shw an example f the BCE
28.The wrds “ in reverse” in Paragraph 4 are clsest in meaning t ____________ .
A. easily and smthlyB. in a creative way
C. in the ther way rundD. frward and backward
29.What can we learn frm the passage?
A. The term BCE came frm Carlsn’s stry
B. James used the BCE t recrd his feelings
C. Tinny was caught in the BCE s she bught a gd pen
D. The writer bught a bk because he was caught in the BCE
30.Which f the fllwing wuld be the best title fr the passage?
A. The Birdcage Effect: Why Is It S Terrible?
B. The Birdcage Effect: Why Are We Caught in It?
C. The Birdcage Effect: Hw t Avid It in Yur Life?
D. The Birdcage Effect: Hw t Use It t Yur Advantage?

31. Artificial intelligence (AI) can nw create vides frm yur wrds, but hw des itwrk? Sra is the latest jump in AI, allwing users t create realistic vides frm a simple text. OpenAI, the creatrs f Dall-E and ChatGPT, created Sra.
S hw has OpenAI dne this? Can yu use the tl nw? And what des this mean fr the future f vide, film and cntent? Let’s take a deep lk int this tl.
Sra is an AI tl that is able t generate ( 生成 ) full vides frm wrded texts. Simply give it a text, fr example, “a field f cats playing with ne big dg” and yu will receive a vide matching that descriptin.
OpenAI has shwn a lt f example vides, mst f which shw Sra prducing life-like vides. On the first lk, it is hard t tell they are generated by AI, because f the
high quality f the vides, textures and camera mvements.
初三英语试卷 第 8页(共 10 页)
In fact, Sra wrks like any AI image generatr that has cme befre, just with a lt mre steps. It is fed examples f vides with text explaining what is happening in the vide. This helps the mdel t learn the cnnectin between the image and what is happening. The mdel needs t understand 3D mdels, mvements and mre.
Fr nw, Sra is nt ready t use fr the public. Just like in the past, OpenAI is being careful with ffering ut its tls. The first step invlves a small number f peple knwn as “red teamers” wh test the tl fr critical areas f harm r risk.
It will then becme ready t use fr a small number f designers and filmmakers t understand hw the tl wrks with creative prfessinals. It is likely that Sra will then becme ready fr the public.
Frm the vides that have been shwn s far, Sra appears t be ahead f anything we have seen befre. Hwever, it is nt perfect. Watch a cllectin f Sra vides and the mistakes stand ut. Bdy parts disappear and reappear, peple cme ut f nwhere and feet flat (漂浮) int the grund.
The main cncern is that vides culd be used t spread wrng infrmatin. OpenAI says it is “taking several safety steps” befre making Sra pen t the public, including wrking with experts in “misinfrmatin and hateful cntent” and “building tls t help detect misleading cntent” .
