Wrking in undergraduate admissins at Dartmuth Cllege has intrduced me t many talented yung peple thrugh their cllege applicatins.
The prblem is that many remarkable students becme indistinguishable frm ne anther, at least n paper. It is incredibly difficult t chse whm t
admit.
The greatest surprise I’ve ever cme acrss in my admissins career came frm a student wh went t a large public schl in New England. He
was clearly bright, as evidenced by his class rank and teachers’ praise. He had a supprtive recmmendatin frm his cllege headmaster and an
impressive list f extracurriculars. Even with these qualificatins, he might nt have std ut. But ne letter f recmmendatin caught my eye. It was
frm a schl drkeeper.
This letter was different. The drkeeper wrte that he felt it necessary t supprt this student because f his thughtfulness. This yung man was
the nly persn in the schl wh knew the names f every member f the cleaning staff. He turned ff lights in empty rms, cnsistently thanked the
hallway mnitr each mrning and tidied up after his peers even if nbdy was watching. This student, the drkeeper wrte, had a refreshing respect
fr every persn at the schl, regardless f psitin, ppularity r influence.
Over 15 years and 30,000 applicatins in my admissins career, I had never seen a recmmendatin frm a schl drkeeper. It gave us a new lens
int a student’s life in the mments when nthing “cunted.” That student was admitted by a shared vte f the admissins cmmittee.
Next year there might be a fld f drkeeper recmmendatins thanks t this essay. But if it means students will start paying as much attentin t
the peple wh clean their classrms as they d t their principals and teachers, I’m happy t help start that trend. But the stry shuldn’t stp
there.

“Fr thusands f years, humans have raced t be the first t climb a peak, crss a frntier, r dcument a new species r landscape. Nw in sme
cases, we’re racing t be the last,” said New Yrk Times’ Paige McClanahan.
In recent years, a grwing industry has been stimulated by climate change — last-chance turism. Accrding t Ec Sustainable Slutins, a UK-
based rganic recycling and waste prcessing cmpany last-chance turism is a kind f turism geared tward seeing the last f smething due t
climate change. As temperatures and water levels rise, this culd mean seizing the last chance t see the Great Barrier Reef, an Arctic glacier and a
remte island that is sinking.
As millins f turists rush t imperiled destinatins, sme are taking advantage f the increasing demand t spread envirnmental awareness. One
turist spt, the Sea f Ice in France, pened an exhibit in 2021 t educate visitrs n glaciers and climate change. This educatinal push seems t be
having an impact, as a 2023 survey shwed that 80% f the visitrs wuld try t learn mre abut the envirnment and hw t prtect it while 77% said
that they wuld reduce their water and energy use.
Hwever, the last-chance turism industry may becme kind f ur cncern. As mre and mre peple fld int these areas in a panic t see them
befre they are gne, they in fact cntribute t the increased greenhuse gas emissins and ver turism, leading t their destructin. Just as many
schlars put it, last-chance turism is a paradx (悖论).
Althugh turists may acknwledge the brader risks and imprtance f climate change, it’s even mre imprtant t cnnect the respnsibility f
the individual turism t the future f ur planet. It’s nt just abut understanding the need t stp climate change; it’s even mre imprtant t avid
making it wrse.

The high intelligence levels f rangutans (红毛猩猩) have lng been recgnised, partly due t their practical skills such as using tls t crack nuts
and search fr insects. But new research suggests the primate (灵长动物) has anther handy skill: applying medicinal herbs intentinally t an pen
wund.
A male Sumatran rangutan knwn as Rakus was bserved by the research team with a fresh facial wund in June 2022. Three days later, Rakus was
witnessed feeding n the stem and leaves f a plant. Thirteen minutes after Rakus had started feeding n it, he began chewing the leaves withut
swallwing them, then used his fingers t apply the resulting juice directly n t his facial wund. He repeated this behavir fr seven minutes and at last
fully cvered the wund with the chewed leaves. He then cntinued feeding n the plant fr 30 minutes. Over the fllwing days, there were n signs f
infectin. The wund clsed within five days and was healed, with nly a faint scar remaining after ne mnth.
It is nt the first time wild primate species have been sptted self-medicating: amng ther examples, Brnean rangutans have been seen rubbing
their arms and legs with chewed leaves frm a plant used by humans t treat sre muscles, while chimpanzees have been recrded chewing plants
knwn t treat wrm infectins and applying insects t wunds. Hwever, the new discvery is the first time a wild animal has been bserved treating
pen wunds with a substance knwn t have medicinal prperties. “In the chimpanzee case they used insects and unfrtunately it was never fund
ut whether these insects really prmte wund healing. Whereas in ur case, the rangutan used the plant, and this plant has knwn medical
prperties,” said Dr Carline Schuppli, senir authr f the research.
Rakus’s gal-riented behavir and the medicinal prperties f his chsen treatment ffer insight int the rigins f human wund care-the
treatment f which was first mentined in a medical manuscript dating t 2200BC. “It definitely shws that these basic cgnitive capacities that yu
need t cme up with a behaviur like this were present at the time f ur last cmmn ancestr mst likely,” said Schuppli.
It remains unclear whether Rakus figured the prcess ut fr himself r learned it frm anther rangutan, althugh it has nt been seen in any
ther individual.

Math had never been smething I was gd at since middle schl. Classes became harder in high schl, and I was even further frm a math
teacher’s dream student. S at the start f my freshman year, I had a dislike t math. It wasn’t that I didn’t want t d well, but simply that I didn’t
think I was able t d well. “I can’t” became my state f mind in all things related t math.
Hwever, I was sn t learn that “I can’t” was nt a chice in Mr. A’s class.
Mr. A always greeted us with pen arms as he said, “Welcme! Smile! It’s a great day t be alive!” It was clear that Mr. A had a true passin nt
nly fr math but fr teaching. If Mr. A ever experienced bad days in life, he never shwed it. Mr. A greeted us with that same smile every day. He
encuraged each student, frm the tp achiever t the “I can’t” student.
I fund myself lking frward t math class. Being in Mr. A’s presence made me feel gd, as if I had the chance t succeed, althugh I still hated
the subject itself. Frm then n, I had spent cuntless hurs studying, but with s many difficulties t cver, I was verwhelmed. The pressure f the

hw much effrt I put int math, I culdn’t seem t keep up. As the mid-term exams apprached, I felt a sense f dread. The fear f failure cnsumed
me, and I began t dubt myself again.
One day after schl, I fund myself walking alngside Mr. A n the empty playgrund. He culd tell that smething was bthering me, and he
