my Sunday-schl teachings. That by was ntriusly wrldly, and I was just the ppsite. There was nthing generus abut this fellw in his
greatness. He wuld always manage t have a rust y nail t scrub while his bat stpped at ur twn, and he wuld sit n the inside guard and scrub it,
where we culd all see him. And wherever his bat was laid up he wuld cme hme and shw ff in the twn in his blackest and greasiest clthes, s
that nbdy culd help remembering that he was a steambat man; and he used all srts f steambat technical terms in his talk, as if he were s used
t them that he frgt cmmn peple culd nt understand them.
This creature’s career culd prduce but ne result, and it was speedily fllwed. By after by managed t get n the river. Despite many chices,

Rbins (知更鸟) are cnsidered as a symbl f the festive seasn and are knwn fr their lively, curius nature arund humans. But even rbins get
rad rage because they can becme aggressive when there’s nise, a new study shws.
Researchers frm the UK fund that the sund f traffic made rural rbins — nt urban rbins — “mre aggressive”. The study was cnducted by
experts at Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge. Human activity has a clssal effect n wildlife, including n their scial behavir,” the team said in
their paper.
Fr their study, the team investigated the behavir f male Eurpean rbins living in urban parks and rural frests in Istanbul. They measured
aggressin twards anther rbin intruder, which wasn’t a real rbin but instead a mdel in the shape f an adult bird. The fake rbin was equipped
with a speaker, thrugh which the team culd play audi, and then attached t trees at the parks and frests. The audi cnsisted f recrdings f rbin
sngs, while additinal traffic nise was added thrugh anther separate speaker nearby.
After recrding the birds’ behavir during interactins with the fake intruder, they fund the urban rbins typically displayed mre physical
aggressin than rural rbins. Hwever, rural rbins became mre aggressive with the additin f traffic nise — pssibly because they’re less used t
traffic nise than urban birds, which are already living in nisier habitats. What’s mre, physical displays f territriality culd increase because the
traffic nise interferes with their birdsng. “In nrmally quiet surrundings, we fund that additinal traffic nise leads t rural rbins becming mre
aggressive,” said Dr Caglar Akcay at ARU. “We believe this is because the nise is interfering with their cmmunicatin.”
Overall, by cmparing urban and rural rbin reactins, the study prvides a valuable glimpse int hw urban-living species adapt t “life in a nisy
wrld”. “Our results shw that human-prduced nise can have a range f effects n rbins, depending n the habitat they live in,” said Dr Akcay.
【小题1】What can we learn abut the rbins accrding t the text?

D.They can remind peple f jyus seasns.
【小题2】What des the underlined wrd “clssal” in Paragraph 2 prbably mean?
A.Psitive.
B.Mutual.
C.Weak.
D.Dramatic.

A.It affected their cmmunicatin.
B.It severely damaged their hearing.
C.It prevented them frm finding fd.
D.It made it hard fr them t return t their habitats.
【小题4】What is the purpse f this text?

C.T shw man-made nise’s effect n rbins.
D.T prve that human and birds are cnnected.
Superhuman artificial intelligence is already amng us. Well, srt f. When it cmes t playing games like chess and G, r slving difficult scientific
challenges like predicting prtein structures, cmputers are well ahead f us. But we have ne superpwer they aren’t clse t mastering: mind reading.
Humans have a mysterius ability t reasn the gals, desires and beliefs f thers, a vital skill that means we can predict ther peple’s actins
and the cnsequences f ur wn. Reading minds cmes s easily t us, thugh, that we ften dn’t think t spell ut what we want. If AIs are t
becme truly useful in everyday life, we have t give them this gift that evlutin has given us t read ther peple’s minds.
Psychlgists refer t the ability t infer ther’s mental state as thery f mind. In humans, this ability starts t develp at a very yung age. Hw
t reprduce the cmpetence in machines is far frm clear, thugh. One f the main challenges is cntext. Fr instance, if smene asks whether yu are
ging fr a run and yu reply “it’s raining”, they can quickly cnclude that the answer is n. But this requires huge amunts f backgrund
knwledge abut running, weather and human preferences. Mrever, whether humans r AI, the thery f mind is suppsed t appear naturally frm
ne’s wn learning prcess.
Yet we might still want AI t have a mre human-like frm f thery f mind. While letting AI frm the thery f mind in their learning prcess is
likely t lead t develping mre pwerful AI, plainly building in shared ways t represent knwledge may be crucial fr humans t trust and
cmmunicate with AI.
It is imprtant t remember, thugh, that the pursuit f machines with thery f mind is abut mre than just building mre useful rbts. It is als
a stepping stne n the path twards a deeper gal fr AI and rbtics research: building truly self-aware machines. Whether we will ever get there
remains t be seen, but we are n the path t learning t think abut urselves.
