It was February 24, 2017, and my husband, David, and I were bth at wrk. It was a day like any ther. Our 15-year-ld sn, Justin, his sister and his
friend Mike were playing with a ball in ur backyard. Cmpletely a cmmn day!
What happened next was exactly a strm. Justin suddenly suffered cardiac arrest(心脏停搏)caused by a hit t the chest, and his heart just stpped.
N pulse, n heartbeat. There are nly abut 10 t 20 cases a year. And it was almst always deadly until recently, when CPR(心肺复苏)has wrked in
    up t ne-third f cases.
Thankfully, the ther children acted immediately instead f freezing in fear. Mike called 911 while my daughter called my husband. That secnd call
prved vitally imprtant, as my husband was able t get in tuch with a neighbr wh ran ver and started CPR. And later, the dctrs arrived and
    quickly shcked Justin’s heartbeat rhythm(节奏)back t nrmal.
Since then, I’ve fund myself changed as a parent. There is mre wrry nw. This unexpected incident has made me realize that anything can
happen t my children. S, we’re ding what we can t be prepared. Earlier this year, Justin tk part in a cmmunity educatin event with ur fire
department teaching Hands-Only CPR t the public. At least 100 participant s shwed up, and Justin shared his stry t shw why CPR is s imprtant.
At a lcal university where I wrk as a nurse lecturer, I’ve vlunteered t jin the CPR and AED first aid training fr incming freshmen.
David and I feel very frtunate t still have ur sn with us. If the kids hadn’t knwn t call 911, he wuldn’t be here. If ur neighbr hadn’t
knwn CPR, Justin wuldn’t be here. I think everyne shuld take the time t learn CPR. Yu culd save a life — maybe the life f smene yu lve.
Cardiac arrest ften cmes withut warning. Everything will be nrmal right up until the pint it isn’t. Yu have t knw what t d.
【小题1】Why des the authr say the incident was a strm?
    A.Her sn played dangerus sprts.

Natural gas, lng seen as a cleaner replacement t cal and an imprtant tl in the fight t slw glbal warming, can be just as harmful t the
climate, a new study has cncluded, unless cmpanies can cut the leaks(泄露), since it takes as little as 0.2 percent f gas t leak t make natural gas
as big a driver f climate change as cal.

The study, which invlved researchers frm Harvard and Duke Universities and NASA, pkes hles in the idea that natural gas is suitable energy
resurces t a future pwered entirely by renewables, like slar and wind. “Even if gas leaks little, it’s as bad as cal,” said Debrah, the lead
researcher. “It can’t be cnsidered a gd bridge, r replacement.”
When pwer cmpanies generate electricity by burning natural gas instead f cal, they prduce nly half the amunt f planet-warming CO₂. But
natural gas is made up mstly f me thane(甲烷), which is, in the shrt term, a far mre pwerful planet-warming gas than CO₂, when it escapes
unburned int the atmsphere. And there’s increasing evidence that methane is leaking frm gas systems in far larger quantities than previusly
    thught.
There are ther balances t cnsider. The CO₂ prduced by cal-burning pwer plants lasts far lnger in the atmsphere than methane, whse
climate effects disappear after a few decades. S fcusing n methane leaks frm gas systems as a way t cntrl carbn emissins(碳排放)means the
wrld might reduce sme shrt-term warming, but still face a dangerus rise in average temperatures many decades int the future. That said, with the
cnsequences f climate change already spreading arund the wrld, cntrlling methane wuld be a way that wrks faster t slw warming.
“I d hpe the wrld pays attentin t this, as I fear t many remain t cncentrated n simply reducing cal use, even if it results in mre gas
cnsumptin,” Debrah said. “What the wrld requires is t mve t a 100 percent renewable energy future as sn as pssible.”
【小题1】Hw can natural gas cntribute t glbal warming?
A.Its huge amunt f CO₂ while burning.
B.Its taking in extra heat frm the atmsphere.
C.Its leaking methane warming the planet.
D.Its cmbinatin with methane t prduce CO₂.
【小题2】What can be achieved by slving the prblem f methane leaks?
A.Avid the threats f climate change.
B.Cancel ut the impacts f glbal warming.
D.Balance carbn emissins with cal burning.
    C.Slw dwn warming mre immediately.
【小题3】What is Debrah’s cncern abut the future f energy surces?
    A.Lack f attentin t reducing gas use.
B.Unbalanced mix f cal and renewables.
    D.Difficulty in prmting renewable energy.
    C.Shrtage f renewable energy surces.
【小题4】Which f the fllwing culd be the best title fr the text?
A.Is Natural Gas Better fr the Climate?
C.Is Natural Gas Taking the Place f Cal?
B.Hw Can Carbn Emissin be Cntrlled?
D.Hw Can Methane Speed up Glbal Warming?
A speech in a play by Shakespeare can be as shrt as a wrd r as lng as several hundred. But what is the mst cmmn length?
Staying away frm Shakespeare himself fr a mment, we can take Ben Jnsn’s play Vlpne(1606)and cunt the number f speeches and their
lengths. The mst cmmn length is fur wrds. The next mst cmmn length is five wrds. Of the ther 16 Jnsn’s plays, 12 als have a speech
length mde(模式)f fur. It was nt just Jnsn; it was everybdy. After 1602, fur-wrd speeches were the mst cmmn kind acrss all the early
    mdern plays that survived.
The Lndn theatre industry tk ff in the late 1580s and early 1590s and we see a cncentratin f speech length mdes f nine r ten. After
1602, the mde f fur predminated. If we lk just at Shakespeare’s plays, we find him ding what everyne else did: changing frm favring nine-
wrd speeches t favuring fur-wrd speeches arund 1597-1602 and never ging back.
Our suggestin is that the playwrights(剧作家)learned prgressively frm ne anther hw t represent mre clsely the speech lengths f
everyday exchanges and fund that audiences respnded well t these. They started t fcus less n strict writing rules and mre n the liveliness f
    everyday speech.
Anther way t think f this is ffered by the Russian literary schlar Bris Yarkh. He put frward an “index(指数)f liveliness” — the rati f
the number f speeches t the ttal number f lines in a play. He researched the wrks f the 17th-century French playwright Pierre Crneille and fund
that his cmedies have a higher index because f their shrter speeches. The mve frm a mde f nine wrds t a mde f fur represents the
shrtened average speech, and thus a mve t livelier drama in Yarkh’s terms.
Nevertheless, we have n recrd f any dramatist r playger reflecting n the shrtening f average speech lengths; ur nly knwledge f it
cmes frm cunting the wrds in the plays fr urselves.
【小题1】What happened in English plays arund the 1600s?

D.It made the characters express their feelings effectively.
Glbal warming is nt nly bringing rising sea levels and extreme weather events but als causing a grwing wave f climate anxiety arund the

everything all right?” I gt clse enugh t ntice his stping(佝偻的)figure was actually alive and was pushing smething int the dirt.
“I’m fine, sweetheart,” he laughed. “Just a lnely ld man taking care f his garden.” He lked very weak and already had a stp. I was
