A parent interacting with a baby is a heart-warming and universal scene. The parent speaks in a high-pitched vice—knwn as “parentese”—as they respnd psitively t the baby’s babbling and gestures, cmmnly with eye cntact and smiles.
These cnnectins dn’t just make fr a tuching sight. New research frm the University f Washingtn’s Institute fr Learning & Brain Sciences(I-LABS)shws they’re imprtant fr infant language grwth, t.
In a study published April 8 in Current Bilgy, researchers used a safe and nninvasive brain-imaging technique called MEG, t mnitr infant brain activity during scial and nnscial interactins with the same adult. They fund that when the adult talked and played scially with a 5-mnth-ld baby, the baby’s brain activity particularly increased in regins respnsible fr attentin—and the level f this type f activity predicted enhanced language develpment at later ages. This’scial’ scenari(场景)was cmpared with a ‘nnscial’ scenari in which the adult turned away frm the baby t talk t anther persn. This interactin shwed lwer activity levels in the same brain areas.
“This is the first study t directly cmpare infant brain respnses t adult-infant scial interactin versus nnscial interactin, and then fllw up with the children until they reached the age f 2.5t see hw the early brain activatin relates t the child’s future language abilities, ”said lead authr Alexis Bsseler, research scientist at I-LABS.
The MEG brain-imaging technlgy allwed the baby t mve and interact naturally with the adult, which enabled researchers t track the firing f neurns frm multiple areas in the baby’s brain as the adult talked t, played with and smiled at the baby. They then mnitred the infant’s brain activity a secnd time as the adult turned away and paid attentin t smene else.
These actins naturally ccur every day between adults and babies, and the study shwed they have different measurable effects n a baby’s brain. Researchers fund that increased neural activity in respnse t the scial interactin at 5mnths predicted enhanced language develpment at five later ages: 18,21,24,27 and 30 mnths.
“The cnnectin between early brain reactins and later language is cnsistent with scientists’ fascinatin with the early age perid and pens up many new questins that we, and thers, will be explring,” said c-authr Andrew Meltzff.
32.What can we knw abut “Parentese”?
A.It is frmal and useful.B.It is universally standard.
    C.It is ften used by a caretaker.D.It is a high-pitched vice frm a baby.

A.By quting theries B.By fllwing suit C.By giving examples D.By making cmparisns
34.Which f the fllwing is right accrding t the text?
A.Scial interactin shwed lwer activity levels in brain.
B.The baby’s brain activity was tracked at least twice in the study.
C.It was the first study t directly cmpare infant brains t adult nes.
D.5-mnth-ld babies with increased brain activity will learn languages better at age 18.
