As smene wh’s been studying English fr many years, yu might think yu knw the English language pretty well. But if yu verheard a British persn say, “A Billy let sme bees and hney in my sherbet (冰冻果露) last night,” wuld yu understand what he meant? Prbably nt, but many native (本土) speakers may nt knw what this persn was saying either.
The example abve was a sentence that a Lndn taxi driver might say t anther member f his r her tribe. In plain English, the sentence wuld be, “A custmer left sme mney in my taxi last night.”
S, what exactly is meant by “tribe”? A recent article n the BBC Culture website pinted ut that nearly all f us are a part f a tribe. This is a grup that defines (定义) wh we are and even hw we speak. And with each tribe cmes its wn “secret language”, as the BBC called it.
If yu wrk in a certain industry—educatin, fr example, yu may use slang (俚语) wrds that nly ther peple wh wrk in that industry wuld understand. Or if yu live in a certain city, yu might use a slang wrd t describe a landmark in the city, that nly lcals wuld understand.
These s-called secret languages each have their wn fascinating histry. In the US, fr example, the undergrund “ballrm” (舞厅) tribe f 1970s and 80s New Yrk City and its language was shwed in the 2018 FX shw Pse.
These secret wrds dn’t always stay within their tribes, hwever. Wrds frm many tribes, especially musical cultures such as rap and hip-hp, ften enter peple’s everyday vcabulary. Fr example, the phrase “t have beer”—meaning “t be in a cnflict (冲突)” —was made ppular by US rappers. Tday, it’s widely used by native English speakers all ver the wrld.
As BBC reprter Susie Dent wrte, “We are all surrunded by amazing secret languages, full f histry and stries and in-jkes. And ne thing is certain: ur tribal cnversatins will never run ut.”

C. They first started in New Yrk City in the 1970s and 1980s.
D. They have failed t becme ppular amng yung peple.
37. What is Dent’s attitude twards the future f “secret languages”?
A. Cnfident.B. Wrried.C. Uninterested.D. Dubtful.

The human vice is a delicate thing. Each persn’s individual sund is prduced when air frm the lungs causes the vcal crds (声带) t vibrate (震颤) . These vcal crds can easily get damaged. Accrding t a 2005 study, 30% f the ppulatin will experience a vice disrder at sme pint in their life.
In a study published in the jurnal Nature Cmmunicatins this week, a grup f biengineering researchers frm the University f Califrnia have put frward an attractive slutin. They have designed and tested a sft patch (片) that can be stuck nt a persn's neck, where it will pick up muscle mvements and, with the help f machine-learning algrithms (算法) that prcess the signals, translate them int speech.
When a persn lses their vice tday, the easiest slutin is t turn t typing, texting, r writing ntes t cmmunicate. Typing can be slw and incnvenient, says Jun Chen, the paper’s lead authr, and writing ntes is nly pssible in gd lighting. The new slutin wuld be able t slve all these prblems.
Dr. Chen’s device wrks based n smething called the magnetelastic effect. Basically, when tiny magnetic bits (磁性钻头) are placed int sft materials, their magnetic prperties can change as the material is stretched.
When the thrat muscles mve under the sft patch, the resulting magnetic-field variatins can be changed int electrical signals. In a test with eight participants, the researchers recrded the signals as the subjects spke and muthed five different sentences. They then trained a machine-learning mdel which was then able t predict which f the five sentences the participants spke—whether alud r in silence—with mre than 90% accuracy.
There is a way t g yet, fr nw the device can nly recgnize the five phrases it was trained n. Plus, t make it practical at scale, the researchers will need t cllect a lt mre data.
38. In paragraph 1, the authr mainly wants t tell us that ________.
A. lungs are easily damagedB. the human vice is special
C. vcal crds vibrate t prduce sundD. vice disrders are a prblem wrthy f attentin

B. Destrying the backgrund magnetic field.

B. Using Algrithms in Biengineering Research
C. Overcming Vice Lss with a New Patch
D. Finding the Principle f Cmmunicatin Devices

Persnally, there is nthing I lve mre than asking “stupid” questins, especially the nes that have n right answers. I remember nce asking sme kids what time it was, at hme, in Singapre, and finally n the Mn. After a lng silence, finally a shy girl ventured (试探地说) t say that it was “every time” fllwed by an energetic Einstein wh shuted it was “n time”. Bth kids shared that week’s Nble Prize because n humans live in that faraway wrld and time is created by humans.
As a matter f fact, we are all gd at asking questins by nature, but sadly as we age, we get used t the wrld arund us and take things fr granted. We became mre results-riented (注重结果的) and cncentrate ur effrts n success. If smething is wrking, dn’t fix it r wrry abut the cause; just relax and g with the flw. Cmmn belief may wrk well, but that des nt mean it is always right. Thrughut histry, it has been thse wh have questined cmmn belief and thse wh have challenged ur cmmn-sense ideas f the wrld that have been the nes t have brught abut majr prgress in human civilizatin.
In 500 BC the ancient Greeks wndered whether the Earth was rund because sailrs n the sea had nticed that the farther suth they went, the mre different stars they saw in the sky. Why was the sky changing? Nearly 2,000 years later, the Italian astrnmer Galile Galilei became interested in this questin and ended up demnstrating the “crazy” cncept f helicentrism (日心说), in which the Sun lies at the center f the universe while the Earth circles arund it at 30 kilmeters per secnd. But if the Earth is spinning arund s quickly, why aren’t we being thrwn ff f the surface f the planet? The answer t this questin wuld nt be clear fr anther century.
Peple like rutine, but past perfrmance is n guarantee f future results. While thse wh challenge cmmn belief tend t be subjected t abuse, the prgress f humankind wuld have therwise been impssible withut these persistent peple and their “stupid” questins.
42. What cmmnly happens t us when we grw lder accrding t the authr?
A. We fcus t much n prcess.
B. We still refuse t relax and g with the flw.
C. We start t challenge cmmn-sense ideas f the wrld.
D. We gradually lse the ability t questin cmmn belief.
43. What’s the crrect rder f the fllwing statements?
a. The ancient Greeks wndered whether the Earth was rund.
b. Galile Galilei raised the cncept f helicentrism.
c. We knw abut the cncept f gravity.
d. Sailrs nticed smething special.
A. adcbB. adbcC. dabcD. dacb
44. Wh might have slved the questin “why aren’t we being thrwn ff f the surface f the planet?”
A. An ancient Greek scientist living in 500 BC.
B. Galile Galilei living between 1564 and 1642.
C. Isaac Newtn living between 1643 and 1727.
D. Albert Einstein living between 1879 and 1955.
45. Hw des the authr develp his writing n the whle?
A. By cmparisn and cntrastB. By using supprting examples.
C. By using time and space rder.D. By generalizatin and definitin.
