Biluminescence(生物发光)is a natural phenmenn where a chemical reactin within a living thing prduces light. It can be fund in many places in nature—fireflies, sme mushrms —but mstly in the deep sea.
Recently, Rambuillet, a small histric French twn, has teamed up with a cmpany called Glwee t turn the city int a full-scale biluminescence labratry. The gal is t change the way in which cities use light. The cmpany uses marine(海的)bacteria harvested frm the cast f France t light up part f the twn.
These biluminescent bacteria are stred in a seawater-filled tube, giving the bacteria rm t flat arund and light up. The light prvided by the bacteria is part f their natural metablism, s prducing the light requires n energy ther than that needed t feed the rganisms. This makes it much mre envirnmentally friendly and sustainable than electric light, which cnsumes a huge amunt f nnrenewable energy.
“On the way t lighting up the wrld with biluminescence, yu have t feed the bacteria and add water as they grw. That’s nt s easy. The phenmenn will be very temperature-dependent and I dubt whether it will wrk in the winter. Als, biluminescence is nt very bright cmpared t electrical lighting, thugh they have imprved the light intensity.” said Carl Jhnsn, a prfessr frm Vanderbilt University.
One ptential slutin t these issues—and ne that Glwee is lking int—is t remve the bilgical aspect f the whle prcess. In thery, luciferase(荧光素酶)can be remved frm the bacteria and used t create light instead f the bacteria itself.Because luciferase is nn-living, it desn't need t be fed. Creating new means f sustainable lighting is a way f being envirnmentally friendly withut plunging the Earth back int darkness.

Why d we talk the way we d? It might date back t when ur ancestrs left the jungle fr the pen plain. Between 5.3 millin and 16 millin years ag, Africa’s landscapes changed frm thick, leafy frests t wide-pen grasslands. This envirnmental change pushed ur ancestrs ut f the trees and nt the grund. Alng with all f the physical and behaviral changes this may have caused, researchers als believe it may have changed the way we speak.
“Open landscapes prvide us with fewer bjects t affect signal cmmunicatin, which means ur vices can travel further cmpared with that in thick frests.” Charltte Gannn, a researcher wh studies language develpment, tld Newsweek. “The mve t these pen spaces may have increased the effectiveness f ur cmmunicatin. ”
By cmparing the vcal calls f the chimpanzee (大猩猩) , Gannn and her team were able t establish hw different calls culd travel acrss different landscapes. In their study, the team played 487 calls frm chimpanzees and measured their audibility (可听度) at set length ver an verall distance f mre than 1,300 feet in the Suth African plain.
“Our results were surprising.” Gannn said, “The rule f sund spread suggests that lwer-frequency (低频率) sunds (the grumphs) wuld have traveled further than higher-frequency sunds (the kiss squeaks). Our results actually fund the ppsite t this. ” In these envirnmental settings, cnsnant (辅音)-like calls traveled a lt further than vwel (元音) -like calls. Actually, arund 80 percent f cnsnant-based calls were audible at 1,300 feet, cmpared t nly 20 percent f vwel-based calls.
Gannn said these results highlight the imprtance f studying living chimpanzees t learn abut ur species’ histry. “We can view them as time machines that allw us t recreate key mments f ur histry s we can learn mre abut the develpment f ur language,” Gannn said. “Despite their ppularity in mdern languages, cnsnants are ften frgtten when speech develpment is discussed. Our research highlights nt nly their presence in ancient times but their imprtance t the develpment f language. ”
32.What led t the speech develpment?
    A. Behaviral change.B. Time develpment.
    C. Physical develpment.D. Envirnmental change.
33.What makes cmmunicatin happening 10 millin years ag mre effective?
    A. Less blck.B. Better tls.
    C. Luder vice.D. Larger vcabulary.
34.What is paragraph 3 mainly abut?
    A. The results f the study. B. The prcess f the research.
    C. The purpse f the prgram.D. The participants f the prject.
35.What can be inferred frm the last tw paragraphs?
    A. The living chimpanzees can recreate ur language.
    B. Cnsnants are significant in language develpment.
    C. The sund f grumphs travels further than that f kiss squeaks.
    D. Cnsnant-like calls travel fur times further than vwel-like calls.
