The tp-selling album (唱片) Sngs f the Humpback Whale was released in 1970. This cllectin f nature recrdings changed the way many peple thught abut whales and eventually helped save thusands f whales’ lives.
The album might never have been made if it hadn’t been fr a sund engineer named Frank Watlingtn. In the 1960s, Watlingtn was making underwater recrdings when he nticed sme strange, deep sunds, which he realized were cming frm whales.

Katy Payne studied music as well as bilgy, and she was amazed by hw the whales cmmunicate like an pera singer. She als nticed anther interesting detail: they had recgnizable patterns. In bilgy terms, an animal call with a repeating pattern is called a sng. The sngs f whales are s cmplex that sme scientists have even cmpared them t cmpsers and pets.
The Paynes thught that ther peple needed t hear the beauty f the whales’ sngs, s Rger rganized the recrdings int an album. At the time when the album came ut, whales were ften hunted and traded fr mney and sme whale species were dying ut. Mst peple had never thught f whales as creatures that culd cmmunicate thrugh sngs. But after hearing the album, many peple began t think differently.
The album led peple t start the Save the Whales mvement. Musicians began using whale sngs in their music, and whales were included in mvies and televisin shws. In 1982, the deep-sea whaling was banned. Befre the ban, mre than 50,000 whales per year were killed. After it, the number went dwn belw 2,000.

Last Saturday, when my grandfather gt frustrated at the name f the singer f a sng, I grabbed my smartphne and fund it in secnds. This astnished my grandfather, wh didn’t understand hw I’d checked the infrmatin s quickly. I laughed and explained, but afterwards, it made me think abut hw much I depend n technlgy.
When I reflected n its impact n my educatin, I saw that technlgy has been significant in many ways. Returning t the stry f my grandfather, he had asked me mre abut hw I used it and abut university life. He said he thught we had an easy life cmpared t previus generatins. I culd see his pint.
Nt nly are we lucky enugh t have the same educatinal benefits as thse f previus generatins, but we have s many mre. We still have walk-in libraries; hwever, the nly ptin fr studying used t be sitting in these libraries with as many bks frm yur reading list as yu culd find, yet nw a single search nline can immediately prvide access t a huge range f resurces. Interactin between students and university staff is anther area that has changed cnsiderably. We can have face-t-face time with ur tutrs, and als cmmunicate using ur electrnic devices. The mst ppular means is via scial media, and it has becme unacceptable fr messages t be unanswered fr any length f time. While this puts an extra stress n the university’s academic supprt team, we students are greatly benefited.
When we cmpare the student life f the past and the present, it is tempting t fcus n the bvius differences in technlgy. In fact, students are ding what they’ve always dne: embracing the resurces available and adapting them t wrk mre efficiently and t live mre enjyably. The pace f change in technlgy cntinuusly gathers speed, s we have t value each innvatin as it happens.

    D. T aruse readers’ cncern abut a prblem.
    29. What is the grandfather’s attitude twards the rle f technlgy?
    A. Favurable.B. Tlerant.C. Dubtful.D. Unclear.
    30. What is a new challenge technlgy brings t the academic supprt team?
    A. Using varius electrnic devices.
    B. Scheduling nline cmmunicatin.
    C. Prviding mre flexible reading lists.
    D. Respnding t all inquiries frm students.
    31. What can be cncluded frm the last paragraph?
    A. Students shuld make full use f technlgy.
    B. Students shuld value the time and enjy their life.
    C. We shuld take technlgical differences seriusly.
    D. We shuld resist the temptatin f up-cming innvatin.

Calling vegetables and fruits “ugly” can be a recipe fr sales success, accrding t a new study.
A French supermarket chain made internatinal headlines when it began marketing misshapen prduce as “ugly” in 2014. Since then, fd stres arund the wrld have launched campaigns t sell “imperfect prduce”. Sme have been successful, while thers haven’t — but until nw, researchers hadn’t adequately explained why cnsumers rejected imperfect prduce, r what marketing apprach was mst likely t whet their appetites.
The researchers cnducted seven studies that tested the effects f “ugly” labeling by having participants purchase prduce at a farmer’s market and nline, and by examining peple’s impressins abut misshapen fds. Interestingly, they fund that cnsumers expected the imperfect prduce t be less tasty and even less nutritius than mre traditinally attractive fds.
But it’s nt all bad news fr unattractive fds. The researchers als fund that when the prduce is labeled “ugly”, cnsumer hesitancy disappears — and it’s nt because f humr r riginality. Calling items “ugly” signals t cnsumers that the nly difference between items is appearance, which makes them aware f their bias (偏见)and significantly increases their willing-ness t buy the less attractive prduce.
“We’re pinting t the surce f the rejectin,” explains Jhn Meredith, the lead researcher. “It makes peple aware f the limited nature f their bjectin t the unattractive prduce and makes it clear t cnsumers that there are n ther prblems in the prduce ther than attractiveness.”
The research als fund cnsumers spent mre n the misshapen prduce labeled “ugly” instead f “imperfect”. And even thugh the ugly prduce was sld at a 25 percent discunt, it turned ut t be mre prfitable fr sellers, as the cst f acquiring the ugly prduce was lwer. Hwever, if the price reductin was t sharp, participants expected the “ugly” fds t be f lw quality.
    32. What is the new study mainly abut?
    A. Fd quality.
    B. Cnsumer demand.
    C. Marketing apprach.
    D. Bias against appearance.
    33. What des the underlined phrase “whet their appetites” in paragraph 2 refer t?
    A. Satisfy their need t eat better.
    B. Stimulate their desire f buying.
    C. Encurage them t risk trying ut.
    D. Raise their cncerns abut nutritin.
    34. Why are peple willing t buy ugly-labeled prduce withut hesitatin?
    A. They are happy t spend less and have mre.
    B. They are curius abut the special shapes f prduce.
    C. They are attracted by the funny and creative idea f labeling.
    D. They are led t believe ugly prduce has n quality prblems.
    35. Which way helps fd sellers make mre prfit accrding t the study?
    A. Call the ugly prduce “ugly”.
    B. Label the ugly prduce “imperfect”.
    C. Grup the prduce by its attractiveness.
    D. Price the ugly prduce at a sharp discunt.
