Once, I was invited t see a perfrmance by my friends. Little did I knw that I was abut t see smething I wuld never frget.
After the hst made a brief intrductin, the yung musician, Mr. Patrick Henry Hughes, was rlled nt the stage in his wheelchair and began t play the pian. His fingers danced acrss the keys as he made beautiful music. He then began t sing as he played, and it was even mre beautiful. Fr sme reasn, hwever, I knew that I was seeing smething special. Abut ten minutes int Patrick’s perfrmance, smene came n the stage and said, “I’d like t share a seven-minute vide.” Then the lights went dim.
Patrick Henry Hughes was brn with n eyes and the inability t fully extend his arms and legs, which left him disabled fr life. Hwever, as a child, he was fitted with artificial eyes (义眼) and placed in a wheelchair. Befre his first birthday, he discvered the pian. His mm said, “I culd hit any nte n the pian, and within ne r tw tries, he’d get it.” By his secnd birthday, he culd play simple sngs as requested. His father was excited. “We might nt play baseball, but we can play music tgether.”
Later, Patrick became a junir at the University f Luisville. His father attended classes with him and he made nearly all A’s. He was als a part f the marching band. He and his father did it tgether. They attended all the band practices and perfrmances.
But even mre than his unbelievable musical talent, it was Patrick’s “attitude f gratitude” that tuched my sul. On stage, between sngs, he talked t the audience abut his life and abut hw blessed he was. He said, “life made me blind and unable t walk. BIG DEAL! It gave me the ability... the musical gift I have... the great pprtunity t meet new peple.”
When his perfrmance was ver, Patrick and his father were n the stage tgether. The crwd rse t their feet and cheered fr ver five minutes.
    24. What d we knw abut Patrick?
    A. Patrick culd dance with his fingers.

Once I tld smene I wanted t get a master’s degree f tine arts in creative writing and they tld me it was the secnd-t-wrst pst-graduatin plan they’d ever heard frm a student. Arts degrees—especially fine arts degrees, which usually cme in the frm f music, studi art, creative writing and theater—have been, ver the years, labeled useless.
It’s true that fr the mst part, STEM degrees lead t higher paying jbs than liberal and fine arts degrees, and it’s understandable why yung peple care abut a higher starting salary and financial security. Student lan debt is playing a rle in the physical and mental stress f yung peple.
And while STEM majrs usually have starting salaries that are $20,000 higher than thse f liberal arts majrs, by the time peple reach the age f 40, the salaries between thse wh majred in the liberal arts and thse wh majred in STEM are actually the same. Fr example, wmen wh majr in STEM earned nearly 50% mre than scial science and histry majrs at ages 23-25, but nly 10% mre by ages 38-40, a New Yrk Times analysis reprted. S even in terms f salary, which desn’t nly determine whether r nt a degree is useful, liberal arts degrees aren’t all that far behind STEM.
It seems t that since peple nwadays are ging t have t wrk lnger, it’s mre imprtant than ever that we actually like and care abut what we’re ding. Pursuing smething enjyable, r else a passin, is cntinuusly fund t be a key factr in maintaining healthy relatinships, mental health, physical health and energy. In ther wrds, nt useless.
Art is als a methd f cmmunicatin. It allws peple frm different backgrunds, frm different walks f life t cmmunicate with each ther. In a wrld where brders and divisin seem t be all ver the place, we need art mre than ever. We need liberal arts majrs. And mre than anything, we need t be able t pursue what we lve with cnfidence, and we need t nt get caught up in the “usefulness” f what we lve.
And just because smene’s primary jb isn’t in their field f study—a writer wh teaches high schl fr example—desn’t make the degree useless. It just means that their way f finding a stable incme is different. The same ges fr artists wh have t wrk multiple jbs t supprt themselves. They might have t find ther means f supprting themselves and their artistry. It might be cpy editing r it might be tutring,
S I am ging t graduate schl, and I am ging t graduate schl fr writing. I might be paying rent by way f vernight restaurant shifts—there’s s much I’m nt sure f. But ne thing I am sure f is this—I wuld rather be a writer wrking tw jbs t pay my bills than be n writer at all.
    28. A New Yrk Times analysis reprt is mentined in Paragraph 3 t ______.
    A. analyse the ptential value f different majrs
    B. put frward the pinin n majrs by example
    C. prve the argument against arts degrees wrng
    D. demnstrate the link between majrs and incmes
    29. Why des the authr think learning arts is useful?
    A. Fllwing ne’s dream f arts keeps ne in gd cnditin.
    B. Ding what ne lves builds up ne’s self-cnfidence in arts.
    C. Mastering arts imprves ne’s understanding f different jbs.
    D. Develping a lve fr arts helps ne maintain passin fr wrk
    30. What can we infer frm the passage?
    A. Students learning arts are mre cncerned abut the value f life.
    B. Peple tend t place incme in the first place when chsing majrs.
    C. The man wh desn’t lve his wrk wn’t stick with the jb fr lng.
    D. Graduates can find a brader space f develpment in the field f arts.
    D
Mst grups f plants and animals are richer in species and mre plentiful near the equatr (赤道). In the cean, that hlds true fr cld-blded predatrs (掠食者). But warm-blded predatrs are mre diverse tward the ples and nticeably missing frm several warm ht spts. Why?
Jhn Grady, an eclgist, and his team cnsidered the pssibility—warm-blded animals need a lt t fuel their metablism (新陈代谢). Perhaps clder waters are just richer in small fish? But they fund that at higher, clder places, there isn’t actually much mre fd arund. It’s mre that warm-blded animals are eating a much bigger share f it than their cld-blded cmpetitrs.
The real explanatin is simple. An animal’s speed, swiftness, and intelligence depend n its metablism, which in turn depends n its temperature. Since birds and mammals can keep heating their bdies in icy cnditins, they remain fast and attentive. By cntrast, the fish they hunt becme slwer and duller. At sme tipping pint f temperature, seals, dlphins, and penguins start utswimming their prey (猎物). They becme mre likely t cme upn targets and utpace the cld-blded predatrs f their wn.
In Grady’s wrds, “Warm-bdied predatrs are favured where preys are slw, stupid and cld.” That’s why sharks and ther predatry fish dminate near the equatr, but clder waters are the kingdm f whales and seals. By keeping fd t themselves in the ples, these creatures can then specialize n specific types f prey, which makes them mre likely t split int separate species. The killer whales f the Nrth Pacific, fr example, include mammal-eating transients and fish-eating, year-rund residents.
But the wrld is changing. It’s likely that the surface f the ceans will warm by 2 t 3°C within this century. Grady’s team estimates that every time the cean’s surface warms by 1°C, ppulatins f sea mammals will fall by 12%, and ppulatins f seals and sea lins will fall by 24%.
But “predictins are hard,” Dnna Hauser frm the University f Alaska Fairbanks ntes. “Plar bears are lsers f a warming wrld, but sme ppulatins are still ding well. Sme grups f whales have changed the timing f their migratins; thers are hunting in deeper, clder waters. These changes might make sea mammals mre adaptable t changing climates. Maybe they just need t find the places where fish remain slw, stupid and cld.”
    31. Why are there mre types f warm-blded predatrs near the ples?
    A. Because there is mre fd. B. Because there are fewer enemies.
    C. Because they are faster and wiser. D. Because they cnsume less energy.
    32. The authr mentins the killer whales t shw ______.
    A. the benefit f bilgical evlutin
    B. fd preference f different sea mammals
    C. the distinctin f specific types f predatrs
    D. the advantage f cnstant bdy temperature
    33. What is Dnna Hauser’s attitude twards the future f the sea mammals?
    A. Negative. B. Psitive. C. Neutral. D. Sceptical.
    34. Which is the best title fr the passage?
    A. Are the Ples Heaven fr Sea Predatrs?
    B. Hw D Sea Mammals Track Their Prey?
    C. Is the Wrld T Ht fr the Warm-Blded?
    D. Why D the Warm-Blded Like Fd Cld?

In the 17th century when a British businessman heard that there were ne hundred millin peple in China, he was determined t g there and sell spns. He thught even if he culd earn ne penny fr ne spn, he wuld still make a lt f mney. 35
Then, why d the Chinese peple use chpsticks? Sme peple did research n the rigin f China’s `chpsticks. One thery is that chpsticks were very cnvenient fr Chinese t use because China was an agricultural sciety, relying mainly n vegetables fr fd. When we steamed r biled fd, it was difficult fr us t use spns t dip vegetables in the sup. 36 Westemers, n the ther hand, travelled with their animals frm place t place and lived n meat. Fr them, knives and frks were mre practical.
Chpsticks reflect gentleness and kindness, the main mral teaching f Cnfucianism. 37 First, dn’t use it t hit the side f yur bwl r plate t make nises, because Chinese peple think nly beggars wuld d this t beg fr meals. 38 It means yu lay the blame n thers. Als, dn’t stick yur chpsticks upright in the rice bwl. That usually appears at the funerals and is believed t be implite t the hst and the senirs wh are at the table.
Tday, chpsticks have becme a typical part f Chinese culture, symblising the pwer f unity. 39 Hwever, ten pairs f chpsticks represent strength, which means they wn’t break ff in any cases. We Chinese peple draw n this spirit, which always inspires and encurages us t wrk hand in hand fr a better future.
    A. As a result, spns were designed and preferred by Westerners.
    B. But t his surprise, the Chinese peple use chpsticks, nt spns.
    C. Therefre, Chinese peple cleverly invented chpsticks t pick fd.
    D. Besides, never pint at peple with yur chpsticks while using them.
    E. Indeed, ne chpstick is useless and s delicate that it can be brken readily.
    F. S these virtues have gradually becme the rules peple fllw in their daily life.
    G. There are sme rules abut using chpsticks that yu shuld pay great attentin t.
Peple frm different generatins ften live and wrk tgether. Smetimes they’re happy being tgether, ther times they’re nt. One f the reasns fr their unhappiness maybe a generatin gap. A generatin gap is the difference between tw r mre generatins—nt the differences between their years but the differences between the generatins’ ideas, attitudes, and interests. Of curse, peple can have differences and still be happy tgether, but accrding t the experts, cmmunicatin between the generatins helps everyne get alng.
Gd cmmunicatin between the generatins starts in the family. These days many families are changing their cmmunicatin style. They are mving frm a “ne-way” style t a “tw-way” style f cmmunicatin. T shw this change, let’s cmpare tw families:
The Smith family uses the “ne-way” style f cmmunicatin. Mr. and Mrs. Smith shw interest in their children, but they dn’t discuss prblems f feelings. The parents make all the rules and decisins. They dn’t ask fr their children’s pinins. They explain their decisins t their children, but they dn’t discuss them. The explanatin is clear and the children understand. The cmmunicatin ges ne way: frm the parents t the children.
The Jnes family uses the “tw-way” style f cmmunicatin. Mr. and Mrs. Jnes shw interest in their children and ask fr their pinins. They discuss prblems and express their feelings. The family makes rules and decisins tgether after a discussin. The cmmunicatin ges tw ways: frm parents t children and frm children t parents.
Better cmmunicatin between generatins at hme means better cmmunicatin between generatins at wrk and in the cmmunity. When peple frm different generatins understand each ther better, they learn frm each ther mre. This helps them frm strnger bnds, wrk tgether mre easily. As a result, peple f all ages can team up effectively and cme up with new ideas in different parts f life.
    40. What is a generatin gap?
    41. Where des gd cmmunicatin between the generatins begin?
    42. Please decide which part is false in the fllwing statement, then underline it and explain why.
▶If Jack’ parents discuss with him where t spend their summer vacatin, they use the “ne-way” style f cmmunicatin.
    43. T bridge the generatin gaps, what ther suggestins wuld yu make besides better cmmunicatin? (In abut 40 wrds)
