In New Yrk City, the administrative department cllects nly abut 28 percent f the cans that culd be recycled. Rubbish cllectrs keep millins f additinal recyclables ut f landfills every year.
Yet cllectrs are ruled ut by gvernment plicies. The United States Supreme Curt in1988stated that husehld garbage is public prperty nce it's n the street: That enables plice t search rubbish fr evidence, but that prtectin hasn't always been extended t recyclers. And in places like New Yrk City, which is testing city-wned lcked cntainers t hide garbage frm rats, cntainers are made clearly impssible fr cllectrs t get.

Eating insects is ne f thse ideas that never quite seem t be ppular. The United Natins spread the idea a decade ag, but, in the West at least, insects remain mstly absent frm supermarket shelves. Faced with an unsatisfied public, scientists have been explring ther chices. One is t feed the insects t farm animals, which are nt s picky.
Of curse, the insects need t eat, t. T date, they have mstly reared(饲养) n leftver chicken feed(饲料). But the supply f that is limited, and if insect-reared meat is t take ff, new surces will be needed. Niels Eriksen, a bichemist at Aalbrg University, suggests feeding them n the waste prducts f the beer industryThe wrld drinks arund 185bn litres f beer every year. Each li tr e prduces between three and ten litres f wastewater full f thrwn-away grains. The mix is rich in prtein but lacking in
carbhydrates(碳水化合物), especially cmpared with chicken feed.
Mst insects grwn fr feed depend, in the wild, n the carbhydrates fund in bad fruit.Whether insects wuld actually cnsider beer waste a delicius meal was, therefre, unclear.
The researchers used the baby insects f the black sldier fly. The yung insects were divided int three grups, which were ffered beer waste, chicken feed r a mixture f bth. The researchers mnitred bth their weight gain and the amunt f CO, they prduced. They fund the baby insects happily cnsumed bth beer waste and chicken feed, and grew equally well n either fd surce. Dr Eriksen fund few differences in hw nutritius the insects wuld be t farm animals.
The experiment may have pssible effects beynd the beer business, t. Bne meal frm farms, and waste frm ther fd industries are all likewise plentiful and prtein-rich.
All nw lk t be reasnable targets fr nutrient recycling by insects. Whether cnsumers will be willing t eat insect-reared beef, thugh, remains t be seen.
28. What is the purpse f Niels Eriksen's research?
A T change public's attitude tward insects.
B. T recycle the wastewater in beer industry.
C. Ta find alternatives t chicken feed.
D. T reduce the cnsumptin f waste prducts.
29. What is paragraph 6 mainly abut?

C. cws-chickens-insects-beer waste D. beer waste-insects-cws-humans
31. What can be a suitable title f the article?
A. Waste recycling will be taking ff sn

C. Insects culd help turn beer waste int beef
D. Insects culd gain ppularity in supermarket D
Frests absrb huge amunts f carbn dixide frm Earth's atmsphere, which make them a key part f easing climate change. But humans may have already made the wrld's largest rainfrest useless and perhaps even detrimental t the battle against greenhuse gases, a new study finds.
Accrding t the study, the carbn balance f the Amazn rainfrest is damaged largely due t large-scale human disturbance t the Amazn ecsystem, with wildfires-----many deliberately set t clear land fr agriculture and industry------respnsible fr mst f the CO emissins frm the regin and the htter dry seasns.
“The first very bad news is that frest burning prduces arund three times mre CO₂, than the frest absrbs,” lead authr f the study Luciana Gatti said.“The secnd bad news is that the places where defrestatin is 30 percent r mre shw carbn emissins 10 times higher than the places where less than 20 percent f frest is destryed.”
In the new study, the researchers analyzed nearly 600 measurements f CO, and CO cncentratin at fur spts in the Brazilian Amazn cllected frm 2010 t 2018. The team fund that, n average, fires pured abut 1. 6 billin tns f CO₂int the atmsphere each year, while healthy trees absrbed nly abut half a billin tns. The team als fund that while the Eastern Amazn, which has seen histrically greater amunts f defrestatin ver the past 40 years, has becme a place where carbn emissins are frm, the Western Amazn which has seen much less defrestatin, is neither a carbn‘prducer’ nr a carbn sink. There, CO absrptin by healthy frests balances the emissins frm fires.
The Amazn Basin cntains abut 2.8 millin square miles f jungle, representing mre than half f the trpical rainfrest area remaining n Earth.“Limiting defrestatin, and especially wildfires, is key t changing this dangerus trend in the Amazn. Imagine if we culd keep the Amazn frm fires, the frest culd be a carbn sink,”Gatti said.“But we are ding the ppsite and we are accelerating climate change.”
32. What des the underlined wrd “detrimental” mean in paragraph 1?
A. Sensitive. B. Harmful. C. Respnsible. D. Ineffective.
33. Which is the majr cause f the Amazn's carbn imbalance?
A.Climate change. B Industrial develpment C. Human activity. D. Natural wildfires.
34. What did the researchers discver in their study?
A. The Eastern Amazn is relatively better-preserved.
b. The Amazn witnessed mre fires frm 2010 t 2018.
C. The majrity f frest fires resulted frm defrestatin
D. The Amazn rainfrest creates mre CO than it absrbs
35:What des Gatti imply at the end f the text?
A. Mre frests shuld have been prtected.
B The Amazn rainfrest is shrinking rapidly
C Peple shuld greatly reduce their carbn ftprint.
D. Preventing fires helps imprve the Amazn's cnditin.
