The wrk invlved in realizing Lauren’s plan was n walk in the park. Initially, while prud f her daughter’s visin, her mther, Katie Schreder, admitted t sme frebding abut the wrk invlved: "I was wndering, "Oh my gsh, hw much wrk is this ging t be?’ I wasn’t sure whether this wuld wrk."This was ne yung change-maker, hwever! Lauren researched plants nline, checking which species needed mre shade, hw much water was required, and when t harvest each crp. During Iwa’s ht summers, she had t water her crps by hand fr arund 2−3 hurs daily. She als checked daily fr weeds, and bent dwn t pick her green bean crp. Thanks t her diligence, Lauren planted half an acre f land, with 15 varieties f vegetables in 2022, harvesting her first crps.
In an interview with a lcal media channel, Lauren says, "I wanted t have smething that’d impact peple. I want t impact cmmunity members. Many peple help yu ut, but it makes mre difference when yu help thers ut. That’s what makes me mst happy."

Almst all fd cmpanies calculate the calrie cntent f their fferings using a mathematical frmula (公式). They first measure hw many grams f carbhydrate (碳水化 合物), prtein and fat are in the fd. This frmula is knwn as the Atwater system. Then they multiply (乘以) each f thse amunts by a set value. There are fur calries per gram f carbhydrate r prtein and nine calries per gram f fat. The sum f thse values will shw up as the calrie cunt n a fd label.
The numbers in this frmula are called Atwater factrs. They cme frm data cllected mre than 100 years ag by nutritinist Wilbur O. Atwater. Atwater asked vlunteers t eat different fds. Then he measured hw much energy their bdies gt frm each ne by cmparing the energy in the fd with the energy left ver in their feces and urine.
Accrding t the frmula, the calrie cntent in a gram f fat is the same whether that fat cmes frm a hamburger, a bag f almnds (杏仁) r a plate f French fries. But scientists have fund that the Atwater system isn’t perfect.
David Baer is a prfessr at the Beltsville Human Nutritin Research Center in Maryland. His team has shwn that sme fds d nt match the Atwater factrs. Fr example, sme plants have tugh cell walls. Chewing plant-based fds, such as nuts, cnsumes sme f these walls but nt all. S sme f these nutrients will pass ut f the bdy, undigested.
Making fds easier t digest thrugh cking r ther prcesses can als change the amunt f calries available t the bdy. Fr example, Baer’s team has fund that almnd butter prvides mre calries per gram than whle almnds. The Atwater system, hwever, predicts each shuld deliver the same amunt.
The Atwater system may have prblems, but it is simple and easy t use. Thugh ther systems have been prpsed, nne is the best.
    28. What is the Atwater system mainly used fr?
    A. Measuring the weight f fd.
    B. Calculating the calrie cntent f fd.
    C. Predicting the energy utput f the bdy.
    D. Determining the nutritinal value f fd.29. Accrding t David Baer’s team, what makes sme fds nt match the Atwater factrs?
    A. The difficulty in digesting certain fds.
    B. The high calrie cntent in prcessed fds.
    C. The difference in the way peple chew fd.
    D. The variety f nutrients in different fds.
    30. What can we infer frm the last paragraph?
    A. The Atwater system is the best way t calculate calries.
    B. Nne f the prpsed systems is better than the Atwater system.
    C. Other systems are mre cmplex but mre accurate than the Atwater system.
    D. Despite its prblems, the Atwater system remains ppular due t its simplicity.
    31. Where des this passage mst prbably cme frm?
    A. A health and fitness website. B. A cking magazine.
    C. A histry bk. D. A science jurnal.Imagine living in a cl, green city alive with parks and threaded with ftpaths, bike lanes and buses which transprt peple t shps, schls and service centers in a matter f minutes.
This fancy dream is behind the idea f the 15-minute city, where all basic needs and services are within a quarter f an hur’s reach, imprving public health and lwering vehicle emissins.
Artificial intelligence culd help urban planners realize that visin faster, with a new study frm researchers at Tsinghua University in China demnstrating hw machine learning can generate mre efficient spatial layuts (空间布局) than humans can.
Autmatin scientist Zheng Yu and his clleagues wanted t find new slutins t imprve ur cities which are fast becming blcked. They develped an AI system t tackle the tugh tasks f urban planning and fund it can prduce urban plans that utperfrm human designs by abut 50 percent in three aspects: access t services, green spaces and traffic levels.
Starting small, Zheng’s team tasked their mdel with designing the urban area nly a few square kilmeters in size (abut 3×3 blcks). After tw days f training, the AI system searched fr the ideal rad designs and land use t fit with the cncept f the 15-minute city and lcal planning plicies and needs.
While the AI mdel has sme capabilities that culd extend its use fr planning larger urban areas, designing entire cities will be mre cmplex. Drafting a neighbrhd cnsisting f 4×4 blcks cntains twice as many planning decisins as designing 3×3 blcks, the researchers said. But autmating even a few steps in the planning prcess can save huge amunts f time: the AI mdel can cmpute in secnds certain tasks that take human planners between 50 t 100 minutes t wrk thrugh.
Rather than AI replacing peple, Zheng and his clleagues think their AI system can wrk as an "assistant" t urban planners, wh culd generate cncept designs ptimized (优 化) by the system, and reviewed, adjusted and evaluated by human experts based n cmmunity feedback.
    32. Accrding t the text, which f the fllwing is NOT a benefit f the "15-minute city" cncept?
    A. Better public health.
    C. Decreased access t green spaces. B. Lwer vehicle emissins.
    D. Fast and cnvenient service.33. Which majr issue in cities did Zheng Yu and his team want t address?
    A. High levels f pllutin. B. Limited access t public services.
    C. Shrtage f affrdable husing. D. Rising crwding and traffic prblems.
    34. What can be cncluded frm the text abut the AI mdel’s capabilities?
    A. It can design entire cities efficiently.
    B. It takes lnger t train fr larger urban areas.
    C. It can cmplete tasks much faster than human planners.
    D. It is limited t planning nly a few square kilmeters at a time.
    35. What’s the best title fr this passage?
    A. Designing better cities with AI
    B. The 15-Minute City: A Dream r Reality?
    C. Imprving Public Health with Greener Cities
    D. The Rle f Machine Learning in Urban Design
