Barbara Spiecke, nw a research scientist at the University f New Hampshire, is deaf. As an undergraduate, she was surrunded by a mix f deaf and hearing clleagues. Luckily, she culd use American Sign Language（ASL）-English interpreters prvided by the university. It was a crucial supprt, but nt withut its challenges. ASL signs fr cmplicated scientific tpics dn’t exist r haven’t yet been widely adpted. S, during her presentatin, a large part f her fcus was devted t signing in a way that was mst likely t avid translatin errrs. The result was an accurate but awkward presentatin.
Spiecker hpes ther deaf scientists wn’t have t g thrugh the same thing. S, she c-funded an rganizatin, Atmic Hands, in 2018 t light “wnder and curisity” in STEM.
