Barbara Spiecke, nw a research scientist at the University f New Hampshire, is deaf. As an undergraduate, she was surrunded by a mix f deaf and hearing clleagues. Luckily, she culd use American Sign Language(ASL)-English interpreters prvided by the university. It was a crucial supprt, but nt withut its challenges. ASL signs fr cmplicated scientific tpics dn’t exist r haven’t yet been widely adpted. S, during her presentatin, a large part f her fcus was devted t signing in a way that was mst likely t avid translatin errrs. The result was an accurate but awkward presentatin.
Spiecker hpes ther deaf scientists wn’t have t g thrugh the same thing. S, she c-funded an rganizatin, Atmic Hands, in 2018 t light “wnder and curisity” in STEM. She had a gal: t create vides teaching scientific cncepts using bth ASL signs and English clsed captining(字幕). Alng the way, Atmic Hands and ther rganizatins have bsted the visibility(可见度)f STEM-related signs, prmting cmmunity invlvement t imprve, and standardize them.
Since the fundatin f Atmic Hands, a newer set f ASL signs fr states f matter that visually explain the cnnectins between them has gained brader acceptance. Atmic Hands did nt create the signs—they came frm the cmmunity—but the rganizatin is sharing them via its nline vides.
Spiecker encurages ther scientists t experiment with new signs and t ffer feedback, gd and bad. “When I teach, I cnstantly remind them that the new signs I shw them are nt cncrete,” Spiecker says. “If they dn’t like it, let me knw, and I’ll use a different sign.”
Spiecker’s gals als g beynd ASL. At last year’s Eclgical Sciety f America cnference, she presented a lecture n pprtunities t diversify science cmmunicatin, such as imprving virtual access t cnferences r creating audibks alngside printed prducts. I lve watching ftball games and culdn’t help but ntice hw many ftballers chew gum while playing! I always thught f it as a chking danger, s why wuld they risk it?
When we chew smething, the receptrs in ur muth that sense taste and pressure frm the jaw mvements start firing and sending electrical signals t the brain. These electrical nervus system signals mve t the brain, which wrks t understand these signals. This added brain activity places the mind in a mre attentive state, which is why fcus and cncentratin are imprved.
Additinally, chewing gum has been reprted t decrease stress and anxiety levels. The brain activity stimulated(刺激)by chewing gum ccurs mainly in the prefrntal crtex, the frnt part f the brain respnsible fr decisin-making and emtinal regulatin. When chewing gum, the prefrntal crtex is activated, leading t the release f a “feel-gd” neurtransmitter called dpamine(多巴胺). Dpamine is knwn t prmte a sense f pleasure and reward, helping t relieve feelings f stress and anxiety.
S des this mean that the harder yu chew, the better the fcus levels? Yes…t an extent. Chewing harder gum des bst attentin mre than sfter gum. Similarly, chewing flavred gum is better fr cgnitive(认知)functining, as it activates mre receptrs in the muth than chewing flavrless gum.
With lwer stress levels and better fcus, athletes have better decisin-making abilities in the middle f the game. It als helps them keep their anxiety levels in check during big games. Chewing gum des give yur bdy a little bst, lifting up yur spirits. That explains why athletes prefer chewing gum while playing a sprt. When we think abut what makes humans different frm ther animals, the wrd “cnscience” ften appears. Cnscience is the feeling yu get when yu assess(评估)if yu’ve dne smething “crrect” r “wrng”. It is with the help f ur cnscience that we understand the mral principles we hld. This mtivates us t act n them and therefre helps us assess ur character and behavir. Eventually, it helps us judge urselves against thse principles, in terms f hw well we fllw them. Accrdingly, yu avid certain desires(i. e., eating in class)and fllw the behavir that is cnsidered crrect r “right”(paying attentin t what the teacher is teaching).
Cnsciusness, n the ther hand, reflects hw aware yu are f yur surrundings. A gd way t understand this is t think f the human mind as an iceberg, as prpsed by Freud’s psychanalytic thery. The part f the iceberg n the surface represents yur cnscius awareness. It refers t all the things yu are aware f and can easily describe. Fr instance, right nw, while reading this article, yur cnscius mind is helping yu make cnnectins. The deeper level f the iceberg is yur uncnscius mind. It refers t aspects that yu are unaware f, including yur fears, vilent mtives, and strng desires that are hard t describe.
Many researchers, like Freud, prpse that mrality r cnscience develp s when a child internalizes(内在化)the rules that their, parents set when the child was grwing up. Hwever, sme psychlgists, like Paul Blm, argue that mrality is smething we are all brn with. Blm argues that all babies are brn with a sense f fairness. The claim came frm studies f adpted children with genes, wh were twins and separated at birth. If they pssessed the “gene” t be kind, they wuld cntinue t be kind, despite being brught up in different family envirnments.
S, which pinin is true? We truly dn’t knw. While there is mre evidence in the studies claiming that cnscience is develped thrugh learning and scializatin, the newer ideas f it being genetically acquired frm birth lk prmising as well!
    32.What is a functin f cnscience?
A.It mtivates us t act quickly.
B.It keeps recrd f ur behavir.
    C.It assesses ur mral principles.
D.It helps us tell right frm wrng.
33.In which situatin des yur uncnscius mind wrk?
A.Yu apply what yu learn t practice.
B.Yu appreciate the beauty f petry.
    C.Yu have a fear f public speaking.
D.Yu describe vilent scenes in a bk.
    34.What may Freud agree with?
    A.Genes affect kids’ cnsciusness.
    B.Kids acquire cnscience with age.
    C.Genetic studies prmte his thery.
D.Parents shuld set strict rules fr kids.
35.What may be a suitable title fr the text?
A.New thery uncvers the secret f ur mind
B.What helps tell human being frm animals?
C.Is cnscience gained at birth r with age?
    D.Cnsciusness imprves ur mral level

    一、写作思路
    1.续写思路:
结合原文,由续写第一段首句“But as time passed, Shelly’s hpe f finding the badge began t fade.”可以预测续写第一段主要内容:Shelly找不到徽章,沮丧的回家了。父母发现了她的异常,她不得不告知真相。结果父亲并没有责备她,而是决定和她一起找徽章。
由第二段首句“Tgether, father and daughter set ut fr the search.”可以推测:在父女俩的共同努力下,徽章找到了。在开心喜悦之余,Shelly也意识到了诚实的重要和父亲对她深深的爱。
    2.参考范文
    One pssible versin:
But as time passed, Shelly’s hpe f finding the badge began t fade. She tried t be brave and nt let her father see hw upset she was, but it was difficult t hide her emtins. Her parents nticed the change in her behavir and asked her what was wrng. Shelly reluctantly tld them abut the lst badge, and her father’s face fell. Hwever, instead f being angry, her father hugged her and tld her it was kay. He explained that the badge was special t him, but it was mre imprtant that she was safe and happy.
Tgether, father and daughter set ut fr the search. They visited the places Shelly had been t during the celebratin, and with each step, they held nt hpe. As they cmbed thrugh the streets and parks, they stpped t talk t neighbrs and friends, asking if anyne had seen the badge. Finally, as they reached the lcal park, Shelly sptted a glint f brnze nestled amng the fallen leaves. With a rush f relief, she retrieved the precius badge, and their heart swelled with jy and gratitude. Thrugh this experience, Shelly learned the imprtance f hnesty, and the depth f her father’s lve and understanding.
