The blue-eyed gentleman lked up at me, with tears in his eyes, and said, “Thank yu.”
I turned in my prject. My teacher asked, “Can I share this?” I slwly ndded as she gt the attentin f the class. She began t read and that is when I knew that we as human beings share this need t make peple happy and t be made happy.

Wildlife ppulatins arund the wrld are facing dramatic declines, accrding t new figures that have led envirnmental campaigners t call fr urgent actin t rescue the natural wrld. The 2022 Living Planet Index(LPI), prduced by the Zlgical Sciety f Lndn (ZSL), reveals that studied ppulatins f mammals, birds, reptiles (爬行动物) and fish have seen an average decline f 69 per cent since 1970, faster than previus predictins. The LPI tracked glbal bidiversity between 1970 and 2018, based n the mnitring f 31,821 ppulatins f 5230 vertebrate (脊椎动物) species. Mark Wright f WWF says the degree f decline is destructive and cntinues t wrsen. “We are nt seeing any really psitive signs that we are beginning t bend the curve f nature,” he says.
Freshwater vertebrates have been amng the hardest-hit ppulatins, with mnitred ppulatins shwing an average decline f 83 per cent since 1970. The Amazn pink river dlphin, fr example, has experienced a 65 per cent decline in its ppulatin between 1994 and 2016. Habitat lss and reductin is the largest driver f wildlife lss in all regins arund the wrld.
In December, gvernments frm arund the wrld will gather in Mntreal, Canada, fr the COP15 Bidiversity Framewrk t agree n a set f new targets intended t prevent the lss f animals, plants and habitats glbally by 2030. Rbin, Freeman f ZSL, says “We need gvernments t take actin t ensure that thse gals deal with the cmplicated cmbined threats f climate change and bidiversity” says Freeman. But sme researchers are critical f the LPI’s use f a headline figure f decline, warning it is easy t be misunderstd.
The findings dn’t mean all species r ppulatins wrldwide are in decline. In fact, rughly half the ppulatins shw a stable r increasing trend, and half shw a declining trend. “I think a mre apprpriate and useful way t lk at it is t fcus n specific species r ppulatins,” says Hannah Ritchie. But Wright says the LPI is a useful tl that reflects the findings f ther bidiversity indicatrs. “All f thse shw they all scream there is smething ging really very badly wrng,” says Wright.

“Regrets are ften painful. A study suggests that sme peple can vercme them,” said Jiawei Zhang, a psychlgy graduate at the University f Califrnia. “But this isn’t the case fr everyne, ” he said.
The researchers wndered why sme peple reprt feeling imprvement frm regrets but thers dn’t. Des it lie in hw peple apprach their regrets?
In the study, the researchers fcused n self-cmpassin(自我同情) as a ptential factr in why sme peple have an easier time leaving their regrets behind them.
400 peple attended an experiment. First, they were asked t write abut their biggest regret. Half wrte smething they did but wish they hadn’t dne; the ther half wrte smething they didn’t d but wish they had. Then, the participants were randmly assigned t ne f three grups:self-cmpassin,self-esteem and a cntrl grup. The self-esteem grup was asked t respnd by “talking t yurself abut this regret frm the aspect f cnfirming yur psitive qualities”.
The cntrl grup was asked t write abut their favrite hbby rather than their regret. Then, they were asked abut their feelings f frgiveness, acceptance and persnal imprvement fllwing the exercise.
They fund that the self-cmpassin grup reprted greater feelings f acceptance, frgiveness and persnal imprvement, cmpared with the cntrl grup and the self-esteem grup. In ther wrds, fcusing n yur best qualities is nt what helps yu feel better abut a regret. Rather, being cmpassinate tward yurself is what may make a difference, the researchers fund.
It’s pssible that peple wh practice self-cmpassin are able t cnfrnt their regrets and see what went wrng, s they can make a better chice in the future, Zhang tld Live Science. Self-cmpassin pushes peple t accept their regret instead f running away frm it.
The researchers used an example f this frm a previus study n breast cancer patients wh were asked t try thinking abut their treatment in a psitive light befre it began. The wmen wh did s reprted greater feelings f persnal grwth later n.

    A.Think f a way ut.B.Write abut their regrets.
C.Recrd their favrite hbbies.D.Treat their regrets in psitive ways.
34.Why were the participants asked abut their gd qualities?
A.T cver up their regrets.B.T see if they have weaknesses.
C.T see if they have self-cmpassin.D.T help them feel better abut their regrets.
35.What was the aim f mentining the researchers’ study n breast cancer patients?
A.T shw the methd f the research.B.T shw the value f the acceptance.
