It may seem hard t believe that peple can actually change the Earth’s climate. But scientists think that the things peple d that send greenhuse gases int the air are making ur planet ____48____.
The ____49____ cvers the Earth. It is a thin layer f mixed gases which make up the air we breathe. Weather systems, which develp in the lwer atmsphere, are driven by heat ____50____ the sun and change in the Earth’s surface.
Oceans cver abut 70 percent f Earth’s surface. Energy ____51____ r lst by the ceans results in a smaller surface temperature change than wuld ccur ver land. The atmsphere and cean ____52____ exchange energy and matter.
Land cvers 27 percent f Earth’s surface, and land tpgraphy (地形) influences weather ____53____. Fr example, the weather in areas cvered by muntains can be cmpletely ____54____ frm the weather in areas where the land is mstly flat.
Ice is the wrld's largest supply f freshwater. It cvers the remaining 3 percent f Earth’s surface ____55____ mst f Antarctica and Greenland. Because ice is ____56____ reflective and because f its insulating prperties, ice plays an imprtant rle in regulating climate.

A very imprtant wrld prblem is the increasing number f peple wh actually inhabit this planet. The limited amunt f land and land resurces will sn be unable t supprt the huge ppulatin if it cntinues t grw at its present rate.
S why is this huge increase in ppulatin taking place? It is really due t the spread f the knwledge and practice f what is becming knwn as “Death Cntrl”. Yu have n dubt heard f the term “Birth Cntrl”. “Death Cntrl” is smething rather different. It recgnizes the wrk f the dctrs and scientists wh nw keep alive peple wh, nt very lng ag, wuld have died f a variety f then incurable diseases. Thrugh a wide variety f technlgical innvatins that include farming methds and the cntrl f deadly diseases, we have fund ways t reduce the rate at which we die. Hwever, this success is the very cause f the greatest threat t mankind.
If we examine the amunt f land available fr this ever-increasing ppulatin, we begin t see the prblem. If everyne n the planet had an equal share f land, we wuld each have abut 50,000 square metres. This figure seems t be quite encuraging until we examine the type f land we wuld have. Mre than three-fifths f the wrld’s land cannt prduce fd.
Obviusly, with s little land t supprt us, we shuld be taking great care nt t reduce it further. But we are nt! Instead, we are cnsuming its “capital”—its nnrenewable fssil fuels and ther mineral depsits that tk millins f years t frm but which are nw being destryed in decades. We are als ding the same with ther vital resurces nt usually thught f as being nnrenewable such as fertile sils, grundwater and the millins f ther species that share the earth with us.
It is a very cmmn belief that the prblems f the ppulatin explsin are caused mainly by pr peple living in pr cuntries wh d nt knw enugh t limit their reprductin. This is nt true. The actual number f peple in an area is nt as imprtant as the effect they have n nature. Develping cuntries d have an effect n their envirnment but it is the ppulatins f richer cuntries that have a far greater impact n the earth as a whle.

Fr example, at first, jeans were ____63____ fr wrkers. They were very s____64____ and peple didn’t make them becme weak easily. But ther peple fund they culd last fr a lng time withut breaking r getting weaker as well. Later n, jeans became ppular all ver the wrld.
When yu see clrful firewrks, yu prbably dn’t think abut the Chinese ck wh invented them in ld times by accidents. He mixed tgether sme cmmn things frm the kitchen. The m____65____ burnt and made a beautiful light.
The inventin f the Band-Aid was als a surprise. Abut 90 years ag, Earle Dicksn wrked at Jhnsn & Jhnsn. His wife was always accidentally cutting her fingers in the kitchen, but she culdn’t bandage herself up. Dicksn decided t make smething t help his wife cver her cuts. S he used a piece f gauze and put it n sme tape. Later, his bss made this int a ppular prduct: the Band-Aid.
Nwadays, micrwave vens are ppular arund the wrld. But in the b____66____, peple invented the micrwave fr the war. American Percy Spencer fund that micrwaves culd ck. He saw a candy in his pcket getting sft when he wrked b____67____ the micrwaves. Spencer then did many tests t p____68____ that micrwaves culd ck fd. The West began t take mre ntice f the East. The fifth vlume f an enrmus wrk re-assessing the Chinese cntributin t science and technlgy is t be published next year. The first vlume, which was published twenty years ag, set the tne fr the whle wrk. In it, evidence was given t shw that many inventins which, until then, western histrians had claimed fr Eurpe, were made first in China. The attempt t rewrite the intellectual histry f the wrld was nt received withut prtest by sme respectable histrians. Hwever, the evidence that has been presented s far in the first fur vlumes has persuaded many histrians wh were dubtful at first. China’s inventin f paper, printing, the magnetic cmpass and gunpwder has never been quarreled, but this new histry has added advanced bridge design, mechanical clcks, paddle bats and many ther inventins t the list.
In the fur vlumes published s far n attempt has been made t explain why China has nt kept up with the West in science and technlgy in mdern times. It is prbable that the answer is t be fund in the scial and ecnmic histry f China, where an unchanged sciety under a relatively kind regime (政治制度) f upper classes cntrasts with the ptentially revlutinary and energetic sciety f the West at the end f the Middle Ages. In recent years, the Chinese gvernment has been making every effrt t catch up with the West again, and there is little dubt that the gap is being reduced year by year. But will China avid the West’s mistakes?
69. S far, hw many vlumes have been published?
70. When was the first vlume published?
71. ________ are the fur inventins f ancient China that are generally recgnized by western histrians.
