Plastic fishing nets, the s-called ghst nets, abandned yearly in the sea—abut 1 millin tns—are mre than just rubbish; they’re a killer. Fish, sea birds, and turtles get caught in the netting and die, with mre species at risk.
Much shcked at this, Pranveer Singh Rathre, a materials-science engineer and materials R&D manager at Samsung, and his team set themselves the task f giving new life t the deadly nets. Last mnth, Samsung revealed a new line f Galaxy prducts made in part frm recycled plastic fishing nets fr the first time. The cmpany estimates this year alne it can recycle ver 50 tns f cean-bund plastic int the key cmpnents that will g int its smartphnes, tablets, and cmputers, thus taking a bite ut f the glbal ghst nets prblem.
It’s n small task t give waste fishing nets a secnd act. The nets are typically made f a substance called nyln which tends t dramatically degrade (降解) the lnger it sits in the cean and is expsed t the sun. “This makes it nearly impssible t use abandned fishing nets directly,” Rathre explains. Besides, high-perfrmance smartphne, tablet, r PC has t be waterprf and can survive severe weather. The nyln in the fishing nets falls far shrt f that level f durability (耐用).
T deal with that prblem, Samsung last summer teamed up with tw partners: ne t cllect and transfrm the nets int tiny nyln pellets (颗粒) while the ther t strengthen their tughness and durability. The end result: The partners hit upn an ec-friendly and high-perfrmance plastic material that’s being used t build the cmpnent parts fr its latest line f prducts. Fr example, tw parts f the Galaxy S22 mbile phne—the key bracket and the inner cver—are made f these fishing-net plastic materials. Samsung aims t use even mre upcycled materials in future prduct lines.
“That’s the hpe fr the glbe and ur missin,” Rathre smiles.

In the late 1960s, the anthrplgist (人类学家) Edmund Carpenter arrived in New Guinea armed with mirrrs, vides and Plarid cameras, and a missin: t disrupt (扰乱) the minds f members f the Biami tribe, wh had never seen full reflectins r images f themselves. "After their first astnished respnse—cvering their muths and ducking their heads—they std frzen, staring at their images." Carpenter's devices disturb that inner image, causing discmfrt. But nt fr lng. Within days, the villagers grmed (打扮) themselves penly befre mirrrs and began taking Plarid shts f each ther.
It's unclear if the Peple f Biami were really as unfamiliar with mirrrs as Carpenter thught. But in any case, what's striking isn't hw strange their reactin seems, but hw related. D yu knw hw it feels when yu make a pleasant remark in a lift, but nbdy respnds? Or when tw peple greeting each ther misjudge whether t g fr a handshake, a hug r a scial kiss? That's the same awkwardness: "self-cnsciusness tinged (带有) with uncertainty", as Dahl defines it. Suddenly, I see I'm viewed nt as a friendly cnversatinalist, but as a strange persn wh talks in the lift.
As awkwardness feels unpleasant, it's natural t want t vercme it. Dahl's initial mtivatin fr writing her bk Cringewrthy: A Thery f Awkwardness, was t get ver her wn awkwardness. But after a jurney thrugh varius awkward experiences, she makes a persuasive case fr celebrating it. We live in an era with mre pprtunities than ever t d s. But awkwardness breaks that false appearance, expsing the imperfect life behind it. It creates a strange kind f scial bnd—hw much in cmmn we have when seeing that behind the disguise —we're all just trying ur best t seem perfect. The awkward yu, then, are the real yu, the ne withut the defensive perfrmance. Dahl even indicates that taking a friendlier attitude tward awkwardness might help us make the cnnectins with peple hlding different ideas.
32.Hw did the peple f Biami feel when they first saw themselves in the mirrr?
    A. Shcked at their reflectins. B. Satisfied with their images.
    C. Curius abut their lk. D. Ashamed f their appearance.
33.Which f the fllwing awkwardness is "self-cnsciusness tinged with uncertainty"?
    A. Yu slip ver just t the face f yur girl in dream.
    B. Yu are caught cheating but get nthing in an exam.
    C. Yu are fund standing in pubic with yur trusers zip pen.
    D. Yu’re refused when ffering yur seat t a seemingly pregnant wman.
34.What causes yu t feel embarrassed frm time t time?
    A. Nt knwing anything nvel. B. Seeking perfectin.
    C. Aviding pressure frm thers. D. Lacking curage t face sme prblems.
35.What can be inferred t slve ur awkwardness?
    A. Treat thers in a friendly way.
    B. Cnnect with yur friends regularly.
    C. Express yurself hnestly with n defensive cver.
    D. Get ready t guard against any threat frm thers.
