    (A)
“It’s a windy day in Laguna San Ignaci, and the waves seem t cme frm all directins,” said Sara Clemence in Blmberg Businessweek. My children and I are riding n a 18-ft bat—small enugh that we can reach dwn int the water if a gray whale swims up alngside. And then we see what we’ve cme fr: a heart-shaped shwer f water and a dark mass rushing belw it. As instructed, we splash (溅泼) the water strngly t signal the huge whale, which turns ut t be a mther with her weeks-ld baby. The baby sn swims beneath ur bat, emerges t blw mist in my face, then “lies nt its side like a 2-tn puppy.” Leaning dwn, I tuched its skin gently. “It feels electric. Als, a bit like petting a hard-biled egg.”
San Ignaci is ne f very few places where a persn can pet a whale. The whales cme each year t the cast f Baja Califrnia t give birth and t mate. If yu’re lucky yu can “shake hands with a leatheryfin (鳍)” r even “plant a kiss n a cld, salty cheek.” I usually wrry abut such interactins, because wild creatures can becme deeply stressed by human cntact. But bat numbers are strictly limited in these prtected waters. And any whale that appraches a bat des s n its wn terms. Like that baby whale: “We see him a few times, and he seems t like being petted and splashed.”
S we are tw species, cnnecting thrugh tuch, but als thrugh eye cntact: “Mre than nce, after nsing arund ur bat, a yung gray turns n its side s ne dark, baseball-size eye is lking up at us.” Whalers used t call gray whales “devil fish” because these magnificent creatures turn vilent when threatened—“r, say, when their babies are harmed.” That makes it feel even mre f a blessing when, n ur third day there, a large mama whale appraches the bat. “I’m splashing when I feel her nse press up int my hand.” Thugh she’s “wiser and apparently mre alert” than her child, “she still decides t trust us.”

In the film Inside Out, 11-year-ld Riley’s emtins are persnified as brightly clred internal figures that drive her behavirs. The same five emtins—anger, fear, disgust (憎恶), sadness, and jy—appear in every ther character’s head as well, functining in much the same way in each individual. In Western cultures, this is the case, argues psychlgist Batja Mesquita in Between Us. Emtins in such cntexts, she writes, are cnsidered “MINE,” r “Mental, INside the persn, and Essentialist,” the latter defined in the bk as always having the same prperties.
This cnceptin f emtin is nt universal, hwever. Emtins elsewhere, she argues, are thught f as “OURS”—“OUtside the persn, Relatinal, and Situated.” Using this distinctin, Mesquita sets abut cntrasting emtins in “the West,” where the individual is the tp cncern, with “the Rest,” where cmmunity is priritized.
Mesquita describes amae as a central emtin in Japanese culture, where it builds interdependence by encuraging tlerance in parenting prcess. She describes hasham—which includes shame, embarrassment, and scial respectability—as a fundamental emtin fr Egyptian Beduins (游牧人). Such bservatins prvide a backgrund fr her t explre a range f issues, including childhd scializatin, the nature f friendship, the rle f language in shaping emtins, and crss-cultural cmmunicatin in a glbalized wrld.
Despite Mesquita’s emphasis n crss-cultural emtins, there is little discussin f whether the MINE-OURS dichtmy (二分法) accurately explains glbal cultural variatin. Other schlars have nted, fr example, that hunter-gatherer scieties at the same time emphasize bth individual self-gvernment and scial cperatin. And in an apparent cntradictin t her earlier arguments, Mesquita herself ultimately cncludes that Westerners have OURS emtins.
Taken as a whle, hwever, the bk cntributes much t the discussin f the rigins f emtins, presenting a remarkable cllectin f crss-cultural studies intermixed with persnal stries abut freign residents’ struggles t reunite diverse emtinal and scial wrlds. In chapter 8, fr example, Mesquita describes an incident where she—a Dutch native living in the United States—bumped int the famus American psychlgist Hazel Markus at a cnference Markus helped rganize. Wishing t express understanding f Markus’s wrklad, Mesquita declared “Yu lk a little tired.” The remark appeared t make Markus nervus and cnfused but was intended as an expressin f sympathy—t sympathize in Dutch is t acknwledge suffering, nt ffer cmfrt as in the US.
The bk’s take-hme message is fundamental: There are n natural emtins, n inbrn emtins, n universal emtins. Mesquita argues that emtins are “meaning making” and “a preparatin fr actin” and that the idea f “emtins as inner states” is a Western cnstruct. Instead, she suggests that emtins are a “dance” ccreated between peple wh live in a specific cultural cntext at a particular histrical mment.
    43. In Between Us, Mesquita indicates that ______.
    A. the Japanese build kids’ emtin f shame in parenting
    B. MINE-OURS dichtmy is the very cause f crss-cultural emtins
    C. emtins utside “the West” are cnsidered cmmunity-centred
    D. hunter-gatherers have bth emtins f “OURS” and “MINE”
    44. We can infer frm the incident in paragraph 5 that ______.
    A. the emtin f sympathy is t ffer help in Dutch culture
    B. freign residents frm different cultures usually unite as ne
    C. as Dutch Mesquita shws her persnality f warmth and caring
    D. crss-cultural emtinal exchanges prbably cause misunderstanding
    45. What is Mesquita’s main argument abut emtins in her bk?
    A. Family educatin hardly influences ne’s emtins.
    B. Scicultural cntexts largely cntribute t emtins.
    C. Western peple’s emtins have n prperties f OURS.
    D. Internal factrs play a vital rle in shaping hw we feel.
    46. Which f the fllwing is the best title f the passage?
    A. The cultural landscape f emtinsB. The cultural rigin f emtins
    C. The cultural cnventin f emtinsD. The cultural shck f emtins

Regarding safety, special sensrs n the rbts keep them frm crashing int custmers. Because there aren’t enugh restaurant wrkers, filling psitins with these rbtic servers is a n-brainer. Dn’t be surprised if yu see ne rlling up t yur table sn.
    A. Typically, their deliveries have t ccur within 30 secnds.
    B. Perhaps yu’re wndering abut issues such as the cst and safety factrs.
    C. In real life rbts functin in many manufacturing and husehld situatins.

Men may eat mre in summer
Winter may be seen as the time t fill up with fd, but in fact, sunny summer mnths are when men eat mre calries—unlike wmen.
The effect seems t ccur because sunlight makes the skin release an appetite-stimulating hrmne (激素), says Carmit Levy at Tel Aviv University in Israel. Levy and her clleagues nticed the effect in experiments in mice, in which male animals expsed t UV light (紫外线) ate mre fd.
T see if humans d the same, the team used data n abut 3000 peple wh had filled in questinnaires as part f the Israeli gvernment’s natinal health and nutritin survey. Between March and September, the men cnsumed abut 17 per cent mre calries per day than they did during the rest f the year, while the wmen’s fd intake stayed abut the same.
Human appetite is influenced by many cmplex systems, but a substance called ghrelin, a hrmne prduced in the bdy that stimulates appetite, seems t be the nly hrmne that directly stimulates eating. It was thught t be mainly prduced by the stmach when empty. “It tells the brain t eat mre,” says Carline Grvin at the University f Birmingham, UK.
Further investigatin revealed that expsing male mice t UVB (紫外线 B 段波) radiatin, which is present in sunlight, raised levels f ghrelin prductin by fat cells in their skin. This was blcked by the female sex hrmne, which may explain why the effect wasn’t seen in the female mice r the wmen. Bsted ghrelin prductin was als seen in men’s skin samples that were expsed t UV light in the lab.
Skin hasn’t previusly been thught t play a rle in appetite, says Grvin. The reasn fr the effect is unclear, but it may be an adaptive respnse t fuel greater physical activity in summer, says Levy.

    (A)
“It’s a windy day in Laguna San Ignaci, and the waves seem t cme frm all directins,” said Sara Clemence in Blmberg Businessweek.
If yu’re lucky, yu can “shake hands with a leatheryfin (鳍)” r even “plant a kiss n a cld, salty cheek.” I usually wrry abut such interactins, because wild creatures can becme deeply stressed by human cntact.

    (C)
    【答案】43. C 44. D 45. B 46. B

细节理解题。根据第二段“Using this distinctin, Mesquita sets abut cntrasting emtins in “the West,” where the individual is the tp cncern, with “the Rest,” where cmmunity is priritized.”(利用这一区别,Mesquita开始对比“西方”和“其他国家”的情感,“西方”的个人是最受关注的,“其他国家”的社区是优先考虑的。)可知,Mesquita表明了在“西方”之外的情感被认为是以社区为中心的。故选C。
    【44题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段“Wishing t express understanding f Markus’s wrklad, Mesquita declared “Yu lk a little tired.” The remark appeared t make Markus nervus and cnfused but was intended as an expressin f sympathy--t sympathize in Dutch is t acknwledge suffering, nt ffer cmfrt as in the US.”(为了表达对Markus工作量的理解,Mesquita说:“你看起来有点累。”
根据最后一段“ she suggests that emtins are a “dance” ccreated between peple wh live in a specific cultural cntext at a particular histrical mment.”(她认为,情感是生活在特定文化背景下、特定历史时刻的人们共同创造的“舞蹈”。)可知,Mesquita在书中的主要观点是社会文化背景在很大程度上导致了情感的产生。故选B。
    【46题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第五段“Taken as a whle, hwever, the bk cntributes much t the discussin f the rigins f emtins,”(然而,从整体上看,这本书对情感起源的讨论做出了很大贡献)和最后一段“ she suggests that emtins are a “dance” ccreated between peple wh live in a specific cultural cntext at a particular histrical mment.”(她认为,情感是生活在特定文化背景下、特定历史时刻的人们共同创造的“舞蹈”。)并结合全文内容可知,文章主要是通过Mesquita在她的书中的观点讨论了情感的文化起源。故选B。

【详解】考查固定句式、副词、动词和定语从句等。根据汉语句意可知,表示“据说……”可用It is said that句式;表示“无论老师怎么热情鼓励”可用n matter hw引导的让步状语从句,表示过去发生的事,应用一般过去时,即n matter hw enthusiastically the teacher encuraged him;表示“不敢……”可用dn’t dare t d sth,为过去时,应用didn’t dare t ;表示“坐上秋千”可用短语sit n the swing;表示“那个让他摔了一跤的秋千”可处理为先行词为swing的定语从句,即the swing where he fell。整句翻译为“It is said that n matter hw enthusiastically the teacher encuraged him, Xia Ming didn’t dare t sit n the swing where he fell.”。故翻译为It is said that n matter hw enthusiastically the teacher encuraged him, Xia Ming didn’t dare t sit n the swing where he fell.。
