I walk thrugh the drs int the waiting area, where there’s a familiar atmsphere f bredm and tensin. Peple sit uncmfrtably n plastic chairs, lking thrugh ld magazines, all f which have been read hundreds f times previusly. Anxius parents d what they can t cmfrt nervus and crying children.

2 In the middle f this particular scene I spt a small girl whse ankle is twice its nrmal size. I speak with the n-duty nurse, wh tells me that Lara’s parents rushed her t the hspital after she fell ff her bicycle. Since getting here, Lara has spent her time crying in pain. Althugh it’s the dctrs and nurses wh will treat her injury, it’s my jb t make her feel better.

What: A clwn dctr is a specially trained clwn wh wrks as part f a prgramme knwn as “hspital clwning”; the clwn dctr helps peple (patients) by entertaining them.
Why: The authr chse t be a clwn dctr because f his frightening and bring experience f ging t hspital when he was a kid.
4 Visiting hspitals and ther health care facilities, we clwn dctrs wrk tgether with medical prfessinals. On a typical day, we spend ur time cheering up patients, their families, and mre ften than nt, the hspital staff, t! We d this by ding magic tricks, singing sngs, telling stries and, f curse, telling silly jkes. Sme children, thugh, dn’t feel like laughing, especially if they’re in pain. We have t be very sensitive and wrk clsely with the dctrs and nurses, wh keep us updated n each patient.

Althugh she is clearly still in sme pain, her scared and anxius lk has been replaced—first by a small smile, and then by lud laughter as I “magically” prduce her sck frm ut f my pcket. Seeing their daughter s much happier has in turn made Lara’s parents mre relaxed.
