Frests typically take hundreds f years t mature, with fur stages f grwth. “Tiny frests flatten ut time thrugh the planting f all fur layers(层),” Walsh explained. The end result is a fast-grwing, native frest in abut 20 years. Over 600 plants frm 43 species will be planted in the tiny frest, the first ne in Oregn.
Walsh was inspired t build a tiny frest after hearing abut this idea, which emerged in Japan and has taken hld in Nrth America. He shared his visin with senirs in his class. The senirs researched tiny frests and made a prpsal resulting in Clean Water Services dnating 60 trees and $5,000 frm the Natinal Oceanic and Atmspheric Administratin. Armed with these resurces, Walsh and the students started wrking. “Smething I didn’t really expect was the utpuring f students’ enthusiasm. Seeing students frm all grades vlunteered t cntribute t the ‘dirty wrk’ really blew me away,” Walsh said.
Senir Megan Cver has been at the schl since the first grade. “I’ll graduate after wrking n this prject, which is surely sad, but it’s really rewarding and great t be a part f this prject and t d my bit. We’re creating this educatinal space fr many yung kids,” Cver said.
Walsh summed up his gal f the prject, which is t build a place where students can enjy and learn abut nature. “The frest will bviusly nt slve climate change, but it will deserve the effrts if the kids think abut climate change and remember the imprtance f refrestatin and trees when they lk utside at the frest.”

Often verlked as a nuisance(讨厌), pigens are actually highly intelligent animals. In a study, 24 pigens were shwn different stimuli, like lines f different width and placement, as well as sectined rings. Each bird had t peck(啄) a buttn n the right r left t decide which categry they belnged t. If they gt it crrect, they gt fd; if they gt it wrng, they gt nthing.
“Pigens dn’t need a rule,” said Brandn Turner, lead authr f the study. Instead they learn thrugh trial and errr. Fr example, when they were given a visual, say “categry A”, anything that lked clse t that they als classified as “categry A”.
Over the curse f the experiments, pigens imprved their ability t make right chices frm 55% t 95% f the time when it came t sme f the simpler tasks. Presented with a mre cmplex challenge, their accuracy went up frm 55% t 68%.
“Using mre humble animals like pigens, we can test hw far they can g with a mind that is slely r mstly assciative,” said Turner. “This paper shws hw incredibly strng assciative systems can be, hw true cgnitin-like(认知) they are.”
In an AI mdel, the main gal is t recgnize patterns and make decisins. Pigens, as research shws, can d the same. When nt given fd, pigens have a remarkable ability t crrect their errrs. Similarity functin is als at play fr pigens, by using their ability t find resemblance(相似) between tw bjects.
“With just thse tw mechanisms alne, yu can define a neural netwrk r an artificial intelligent machine t basically slve these categrizatin prblems,” said Turner. “It stands t reasn that the mechanisms that are present in the AI are als present in the pigen.”
The researchers nw aim t c-perate with scientists wh study pigens and their brains. They are hping that these findings can have practical applicatins in better understanding human brain damage. “Maybe we can get sme further insight int what is ging n in that little bird brain,” said Turner.

Usain Blt burned abut 10kcal f energy t win his gld during the 200-metre sprint final at the Olympic Games, which culd rughly pwer an ld 60W light bulb fr 11 minutes. If yu culd make use f all the pwer generated by all the athletes during the Games, yu wuld still be nwhere clse t reaching the 29.5 billin Watts cnsumed verall by the athletes, spectatrs and rganizers ver the event. This is strange given that the effect wrks bth ways: the climate crisis is nt just affected by sprts, but it is already having a negative impact n many sprts. When ice-climber Will Gadd set ut t cnquer the wrld’s glaciers, he didn’t realize it wuld becme a race against climate change. “I thught glaciers are there frever.” When he arrived at the summit, Gadd was shcked: “The ice…wasn’t there. The things I planned t climb were gne.”
Glbal heating is nticeable in ther sprts. Amy Steel played prfessinal net ball until she suffered frm heatstrke after playing in 39°C cnditins and unfrtunately, the damage was permanent. Nt nly that, but extreme weather events made mre frequent as a result f glbal heating mean sprting events are mre ften delayed r canceled. This has cst sprt billins in ptential earnings.
Yet sprt can be a pwerful mtivatr: it can unite whle natins behind its teams. Culd sprt have a rle t play in driving climate awareness? Will Gadd and Amy Steel are amng many athletes wh think s. One thing is certain. Sprt must put climate change at the tp f its agenda and decarbnize at a Usain Blt-like pace t make a difference.
32. What is the main fcus f the first paragraph?
A. The energy impact f sprts events.
B. Blt’s cntributin t the envirnment.
C. The amunt f pwer generated by athletes.
D. The reasn fr energy cnsumptin in sprts.
33. Why des the writer use Will Gad d and Amy Steel as examples?
A. They initiated climate-cnscius sprts.
B. They sustained permanent injuries in sprts.
C. They fell victim t climate-related incidents.
D. They achieved recrd-breaking perfrmances.
