Tw and a half millennia ag, Scrates cmplained that writing wuld harm students. Scrates did nt have peer-reviewed science t make his case abut the usefulness f learning cncepts by heart.
Tday a different debate is raging abut the dangers f anther technlgy-cmputers and the typing peple d n them. As primary-schl pupils and PhD hpefuls return fr a new schl year, many will d s with a greater-than-ever reliance n cmputers t take ntes and write papers. Sme parents f yunger students are dismayed that their children are nt just encuraged but required t take laptps t class.
A line f research shws the benefits f an “innvatin” ahead f cmputers: handwriting. Studies have fund that writing n paper can imprve everything frm recalling a randm series f wrds t imparting a better cnceptual grasp f cmplicated ideas.
Handwriting—which takes lnger fr nearly all university-level students—frces nte-takers t synthesize ideas int their wn wrds. This aids cnceptual understanding at the mment f writing. But thse taking ntes by hand als perfrm better n tests when students are later able t study frm their ntes. The effect even persisted when the students wh typed were explicitly instructed t rephrase the material in their wn wrds. The instructin was “cmpletely ineffective” at reducing verbatim(逐字逐句地)nte-taking, the researchers nte: they did nt understand the material s much as parrt it.
Many studies have cnfirmed handwriting’s benefits, and plicymakers have taken nte. Hwever, several schl systems in America have gne s far as t ban mst laptps. This is t extreme. Sme students have disabilities that make handwriting especially hard. Nearly all will eventually need typing skills. And typing can imprve the quality f writing: being able t get ideas dwn quickly, befre they are frgtten, can bviusly be beneficial.
Virginia Berninger, prfessr f psychlgy at the University f Washingtn, is a lngtime advcate f handwriting. But she is nt a purist. Since students spend mre time n devices as they age, she argues fr ccasinal “tuning up” f handwriting in later schl years.
28. What des the underlined wrd “dismayed” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Inspired.B. Disappinted.C. Amazed.D. Cnfused.
29. What can be inferred frm paragraph 4?
A. Students taking ntes by hand understand the material better.
B. Students studying frm their ntes perfrm better n tests later.
C. Students wh take ntes in their wn wrds prefer handwriting
D. Students wh typed can imitate the material in an effective way.
30. Which f the fllwing des Virginia Berninger agree with?
A. Students shuld spend mre time n devices.
B. Students shuld take ntes by hand at schl.
C. Learning typing skills at schl is unnecessary.
D. Senir students can take ntes in different ways.
31. What is the main idea f the passage?
A. Handwriting is mre beneficial than typing.
B. Schls shuld put emphasis n handwriting.
C. The imprtance f handwriting is better understd.
D. Handwriting and typing are equally imprtant at schl.

Army ants make a habit f killing rganisms, ften much larger than themselves, breaking them int pieces and dragging them back t their bases. They dn’t eat everything. Waste full with discarded bits f prey is a feature f army ant bases. But little is knwn abut which animals make use f army ant leavings.
As recunted in a paper in Eclgy &. Evlutin, Christph vn Beer en at the Technical University f Darmstadt and Daniel Krnauer at the Rckefeller University in New Yrk, went t the rainfrests f Csta Rica t find ut. They fund an entire ecsystem thriving amng the leftvers.
Mnitring tiny insects in a rainfrest is tricky. But the researchers hped mdern DNA analysis techniques might make the jb manageable. Wrking with a team f clleagues, they fllwed ant trails back t their bases, finding 34 sites in ttal.
The researchers used a handheld vacuum cleaner t suck up all the bugs at waste and brught the samples back t a field labratry. T keep the task manageable, the team cnfined themselves t examining nly the beetles they had cllected. They identified the beetles they culd and ran DNA analyses n thse they culd nt.
In ttal, they cllected 8.364 adult beetles, 511 beetle larvae and 24 beetle eggs. Thse were spread acrss 91 species, several f which were entirely new t science. Aside frm that being far mre than anyne had expected, the presence f the larvae and eggs indicates that the leftvers are nt s much cnvenient restaurants as full-n hmes, where the beetles live ut their entire lives.
Precisely hw these species manage t avid being eaten themselves by their army-ant hsts remains t be determined. Dr. vn Beer en speculates that a hygiene instinct that keeps the ants frm eating material that has been taken t their waste is partially respnsible. And many species f beetles are able t prduce cmpunds that smell disgusting t ants. The chances are high that amng these insects are sme predatrs t, seeking t feed n unsuspecting scavengers(食腐动物) in turn.
32. What d army ants d with rganisms?
A. They cnsume sme f rganisms.
B. They drag rganisms t waste piles.
C. They kill rganisms and eat them all.
D. They break rganisms int discarded bits.
33. Hw did the researchers make the jb manageable?
A. By examining the beetles they had sucked up.
B. By classifying the insects int different varieties.
C. By using DNA analysis techniques n all beetles.
D. By running DNA analyses n the unknwn insects.
34. What did the researchers find after analysis?
A. The leftvers are like restaurants t the beetles.
B. The leftvers are just like hmes t the beetles.
C. The army ants kill sme f the larvae and eggs.
D. The larvae and eggs are eaten by the army ants.
35. What culd be the title f the passage?
A. In the Leavings the Insects Are the King
B. One Insect’s Leavings Is Anther’s Meal
C. Where There’re Leavings, There’re Insects
D. When the Ants Away, the Insects Will Play
