T get a clser lk at these amazing creatures, Herman and his team spent a week n bard the Jennifer Marie. Whenever they heard the cry “Dlphins!” they slipped int the water. The dlphins apprached, curius abut them, bserving them with dark, liquid eyes. Dlphins lve t imitate. If they swam n their backs, Dlphins did t. If they dived, Dlphins fllwed. This talent can be carried t extrardinary lengths. In ne instance, a trainer blew a puff(泡)f cigarette smke against the windw f an bservatin tank. In a wrld where fire threatens mre and mre hmes, scientists have develped a surprising type f material that might keep sme buildings safer: thin sheets f fungi(真菌).
Underneath every mushrm is a branching netwrk f rt like structures called a mycelium(菌丝体). Nw researchers have successfully grwn these netwrks int pizza-size sheets that culd act as a fire retardant in building materials, accrding t a new study in Plymer Degradatin and Stability.
“Using a bilgical material like mycelium has enrmus benefits”, says senir authr Eversn Kandare. Unlike asbests, which is still smetimes added t building materials as a fire retardant, mycelium des nt release pisnus cmpunds when expsed t fire. “When there is a building fire, it ften isn’t the flame intensity r the heat that kills r injures peple,” says Kandare, an engineer at RMIT University in Melburne, Australia. “It is the smke and the pisnus metal that cmes ut f building materials.”
The new mycelium sheets, grwn int prtective carpets up t a few millimeters thick, culd prevent such building materials frm burning in the first place. Mycelium cntains a lt f carbn. When expsed t fire, the sheet briefly burns, releasing water and carbn dixide int the air, leaving behind a black layer f carbn.
This study is the first t integrate these prperties int a useful building material. Kandare suggests mycelium culd replace the fire retardant fam(泡沫剂), which can prduce CO and ther pisnus prducts when it burns.
The RMIT team has been reaching ut t mushrm farmers t see whether they culd prmte the technlgy fr cmmercial use. Kandare says, “Mycelium can grw in the dark, which means its energy needs are relatively minimal. Even better, mycelium is a bilgical material, and any waste it leaves behind can be used as fertilizer.”

    A. Fire blck. B. Fire signal. C. Fire alarm. D. Fire detectin.
    33. What is paragraph 4 mainly abut?

    B. It cntains enrmus fam.
    C. It’s resistant t high temperature.
    D. It’s a safer ptin fr cnstructin.
    35. What is Kandare’s attitude t mycelium’s future use?
    A. Cntradictry. B. Dubtful. C. Optimistic. D. Cautius.
