1.Shpping fr clthes is nt the same experience fr a man as it is fr a wman. A man ges shpping because he needs smething. His purpse is settled and decided in advance. He knws what he wants, and his bjective is t find it and buy it; the price is a secndary cnsideratin. All men simply walk int a shp and ask the assistant fr what they want. If the shp has it in stck(有现货的), the salesman prmptly prduces it, and the business f trying it n fllws at nce. All being well, the deal can be and ften is cmpleted in less than five minutes, with hardly any chat and t everyne's satisfactin.
Fr a man, slight prblems may begin when the shp des nt have what he wants, r des nt have exactly what he wants. In that case the salesman, as the name implies, tries t sell the custmer smething else, he ffers the nearest t the article required. N gd salesman brings ut such a substitute implitely; he des s with skill: “I knw this jacket is nt the style yu want, sir, but wuld yu like t try it fr size? It happens t be the clr yu mentined.” Few men have patience with this treatment, and the usual respnse is: “This is the right clr and may be the right size, but I shuld be wasting my time and yurs by trying it n.”
Nw hw des a wman g abut buying clthes? In almst every respect she des s in the ppsite way. Her shpping is nt ften based n need. She has never fully made up her mind what she wants, and she is nly “having a lk rund”. She is always pen t persuasin; indeed she sets great stre by what the saleswman tells her, even by what cmpanins tell her. She will try n any number f things. Uppermst in her mind is the thught f finding smething that everyne thinks suits her. Cntrary t a lt f jkes, mst wmen have an excellent sense f value when they buy clthes. They are always n the lkut fr the unexpected bargain. Faced with a rmful f dresses, a wman may easily spend an hur ging frm ne rail t anther, t and fr, ften retracing her steps, befre selecting the dresses she wants t try n. It is a labrius prcess, but apparently an enjyable ne. Mst dress shps prvide chairs fr the waiting husbands.
