Many peple have participated in lts f virtual meetings these years. Sme research shws this adjustment might nt impact wrkplace prductivity t any great degree. A new study, thugh, suggests therwise.
In the study, 602 participants were randmly(随机) paired and asked t cme up with creative uses fr a prduct. They were als randmly selected t wrk tgether either in persn r virtually. The pairs were then ranked by assessing their ttal number f ideas, as well as thse cncepts’ degree f nvelty, and asked t submit their best idea. Amng the grups, virtual pairs came up with significantly fewer ideas, suggesting that smething abut face-t-face interactin generates mre creative ideas. The findings culd stiffen emplyers’ reslve t urge r require their emplyees t cme back t the ffice.

When randm bjects were placed in bth the virtual and physical rms, the virtual pairs f participants spent mre time lking directly at each ther rather than letting their lk wander abut the rm and taking in the entire scene. Eyeing ne’s whle envirnment and nticing the randm bjects were assciated with increased idea generatin. On platfrms, the screen ccupies ur interactins. Our attentin wanders less. “Lking away might cme acrss as rude,” said Brucks, “s we have t lk at the screen because that is the defined cntext f the interactin, the same way we wuldn’t walk t anther rm while talking t smene in persn.”
Like mst educatrs, Brucks has primarily taught virtually in the past three years, and she did ntice sme benefits f the apprach as well. Her students were mre likely t take turns speaking and her shyer students spke up mre ften, rid f the anxiety that cmes frm addressing a large classrm. Brucks fund that ne slutin t imprving virtual idea generatin might be t simply turn ff the camera, fr her students felt “freer” and mre creative when asked t d s. And this may be sund advice fr the wrkplace.

Sustained Silent Reading (SSR) is the practice f prviding a shrt perid f class time fr students t read silently whatever they chse accrding t their interests. SSR prgrams can be ffered at actually any grade level. Hwever, it takes a great deal f time, effrt, and knw hw t put a successful SSR prgram int peratin. I first recgnized this when I was a high schl teacher twenty years ag. Thugh sme f my students were happy t be allwed t select and read bks in class, many never truly dived int their reading. I knew that there must be ways t imprve the implementatin(实施)f my SSR prgram, but I wasn’t sure what they were.
Years later, when I returned t the University f Suthern Califrnia, I began analyzing a large sample f SSR studies t determine what made them effective and fund that successful prgrams shared five key factrs: easy access t reading materials, sufficiently interesting materials, teachers’ encuragement, fllw-up activities and reading at least twice a week.
In fact, nly when teachers fllw specific guidelines d these prgrams achieve their full ptential. Having learned this, I decided t create an “ideal” SSR prgram fr my students by emplying the five factrs abve. At the same time, anther high schl in ur district als made the decisin t ffer students SSR time each day. Hwever, having n knwledge f the five factrs, the teachers simply asked their students t “read anything fr fifteen minutes.”
The result was that the students at my schl utperfrmed (胜过)the ther schl in fur areas: reading cmprehensin, psitive attitudes tward reading, frequency f after-schl pleasure reading, and use f a wider range f reading surces. I shared my findings with the ther schl’s staff members. Since then, bth schls have experienced the psitive benefits f SSR.
Tday, I have given many lectures at a wide variety f schls where teachers are eager t learn “hw-t” methds fr develping prgrams that will mtivate their students t becme hked n reading. They ask a variety f excellent questins and I have never been bred f answering them.
What d we knw abut the SSR prgram frm Paragraph 1?
It’s an after-class reading prgram.
It suits students f all grade levels.
It requires teachers t select bks accrding t their interest.
It’s easy t cnduct the SSR prgram successfully in practice.

A. fifteen minutes’ reading a week was enugh.
B. successful SSR prgrams relied n five key factrs.
C. easy reading materials made SSR prgrams effective.
D. students’ ptential culd be achieved thrugh reading.
31.The authr’s “ideal” SSR prgram helps his students perfrm better in ________.
A. psitive life attitudesB. great interest in studying
C. understanding abilities in readingD. wning wider studying surces
32.The authr writes the passage t ________.
A. intrduce his specific prgress in studying SSR
B. tell readers abut his SSR teaching experience

W: Have yu been t the Natinal Museum since it repened?
M: N, have yu?
W: Yes, I went yesterday with sme friends wh were visiting frm ut f twn. It was wnderful! We were nly able t see a few f the exhibits because we spent s much time lking at the jade exhibit. It was amazing. The jade was simply amazing. The cllectin includes pieces frm arund the time f Peking Man thrugh the Qing Dynasty. Althugh the artistry f the later pieces is superb, I think I enjyed the early nes best. The stnes were s beautiful, the carved patterns were simple yet elegant, and they were all dne with such primitive tls — truly astnishing!
M: That sunds like it’s wrth a visit. My wife wuld prbably enjy it, t. Hw much is the entrance fee?
W: That’s the best part. Like mst museums in Beijing, admissin is free!
