Earthquakes cannt be frecast, but engineers can prepare fr them. Seismic-islatin (地震隔离) systems, built int the bases f certain buildings in high-risk areas, use cmplex structures f cncrete, rubber and metal t reduce quake damage by absrbing the grund’s hrizntal shaking.
But such adaptatins are expensive. Engineer Jian Zhang f the University f Califrnia, says building seismic-islatin system can increase cnstructin csts by up t 20 percent. Althugh these systems might save mre than they cst ver time, builders in sme regins may nt have the budget fr them at present.
A new seismic-islatin methd uses the physics f rlling t create a lwer-cst alternative with readily available materials: recycled tennis balls. “Everyne plays tennis, and they dn’t knw what t d with the tennis balls after each game,” says ETH Zürich seismic engineer Michalis Vassiliu.
Vassiliu’s team based its methd n an early frm f seismic-islatin that rlls a shaking building t a stp the way a skater in a half-pipe eventually cmes t rest. By separating a building frm the grund with a layer f spheres, rlling islatin changes unstable hrizntal shaking int a gentle rcking mtin. This methd was used in 5,000-year-ld Peruvian pyramids, but tday builders favr expensive, standardized islatin systems.
Fr their mdern take n rlling seismic-islatin, the researchers injected cncrete-like mixes int hundreds f balls that had lst their bunce. They built an inexpensive mdel cnsisting f fur filled tennis balls sandwiched between tw cncrete plates, and they fund that it withstd earthquake shaking while supprting eight kil newtns f frce per ball — abut twice what islatin systems might experience under ne-stry huses.
Zhang says that the wrk is wrthwhile and that such technlgy might serve an unmet need. But she ntes that the results are primary. Vassiliu agrees; next steps will mean creating and testing a larger mdel with hundreds f tennis balls at a research center in earthquake-prne Cuba — an example f a place where such systems culd make islatin practicable in rdinary cnstructin.
    28. Why d the engineers adpt recycled tennis balls?
    A. T imprve the perfrmance f tennis balls.
    B. T help deal with the tennis balls after matches.
    C. T simplify the cmplex structures f buildings.
    D. T cut the expense f seismic-islatin building.
    29. What effect culd the new methd achieve?
    A. Recycling useless tennis balls.
    B. Withstanding earthquake shaking.
    C. Transfrming the shaking int a gentle ne.
    D. Enabling a huse t supprt much mre frce.
    30. Which f the fllwing best describes Zhang’s attitude twards the new technlgy?
    A. Dubtful.B. Objective.C. Unclear.D. Apprving.
    31. What is the main idea f the text?
    A. Researchers are creating and testing mdels in Cuba.
    B. Engineers are explring ways f earthquake frecasts.
    C. A lw-cst design helps shaking buildings rll t a stp.
    D. Recycled tennis balls culd prtect buildings frm disasters.

Cmmuting t and frm wrk can be a nightmare. Cars advance slwly in stp and g traffic, crawling frm ne traffic jam at stplights t the next. At peak rush hur especially, there is n chance f sailing thrugh a series f green lights. Nw, thanks t artificial intelligence, German researchers have fund a way t reduce time spent at the crssrads.
Called the KI4LSA prject and funded by the Ministry f Transprt and Digital Infrastructure, the innvatin is being tested. Scientists first studied algrithms taken frm a busy intersectin t learn abut traffic patterns and where imprvements were mst needed. Then, the technlgy, using high-reslutin cameras and radar sensrs, mre precisely captured the actual traffic situatin and detected the average speed f the cars and their waiting times. Finally, the AI uses deep enhanced learning algrithms t calculate the best switching behaviur fr the traffic lights and determine the best phase sequence t shrten waiting times at the crssrads.
The results are encuraging when it is being tried ut at a busy intersectin in Lemg, Germany. The intelligent lights are said t imprve traffic flw by 10 t 15 percent, which results in mney saved; the EU estimates that traffic jams create ecnmic damage that adds up t 100 billin eurs a year. Aside frm reducing cmmuting time, these traffic lights will reduce nise and CO2 emissins frm cars waiting at the crssrads.
Anther exciting develpment in this research is the K14PED prject, which studies pedestrians crssing the crssrads. Using AI as well as a 3D pints clud, researchers can identify hw many peple are waiting at a pedestrian crssing and whether sme f the disabled r elder peple will need extra time t crss the street. Such a needs-based system culd reduce pedestrian waiting time by 30 percent, which culd then decrease jaywalking(乱穿马路)by 25 percent.
Researchers are ptimistic that it will be adpted by many cuntries after the tests in the German twns f Lemg and Bielefeld. This technlgy is exciting news fr pedestrians and drivers alike. It encurages safety, prtects the envirnment, and may even give yu mre time t enjy yur mrning cffee befre heading ff t wrk!
    32. Why is AI used in the KI4LSA prject?
    A. T study traffic algrithms t cntrl CO2 emissins.
    B. T detect rad cnditins t reduce jam r speeding.
    C. T remind peple t pass in sequence fr a shrter wait.
    D. T adjust traffic signals t ensure efficiency at the crssrads.
    33. Which f the fllwing is true accrding t the passage?
    A. The intelligent lights serve the mere purpse f reducing cmmuting time.
    B. The better traffic flw is imprved, the less ecnmic damage is caused.
    C. The mre cars are waiting at the crssrads, the mre nise is reduced.
    D. The effect f traffic jams is heavier n envirnment than n ecnmy.
    34. What is the functin f K14PED prject?
    A. It mnitrs traffic cnditins at intersectins.
    B. It helps t estimate the number f jaywalkers.
    C. It ensures flexible crssing time fr pedestrians.
    D. It imprves the speed f vehicles n busy rads.
    35. What is the main idea f this passage?
    A. The intelligent lights ffer a blessing t transprtatin.
    B. The AI technlgy is bund t be a prmising industry.
    C. Attentive traffic service lends a helping hand t senirs.
    D. Digital traffic systems mark the beginning f smart cities.

Even thugh we didn’t always talk, just having her there made me feel secure.
Sitting there, I lked back at the wasted years and regretted trying t live my wn life and verlking hers. I felt particularly bad because I had nt even given her a hug befre she barded her plane, and that made my heart ache.

    Pssible versin:
This qute highlights the imprtance f determinatin and devtin. T me, a strng willpwer is what it takes t accmplish anything difficult.
This is apparently true t Tu Yuyu. Faced with the challenges t find a cure fr malaria, she encuntered numerus bstacles. Hwever, she made up her mind t settle the prblem instead f acknwledging defeat. After endless attempts, she led her team t discver artemisinin and win the battle against malaria, saving hundreds f thusands f peple’s lives.
Overall, I’m inspired by Tu Yuyu and her team. Their cntributin demnstrates that in time f difficulties, we are suppsed t re n effrt t win. Hpefully, we can turn “impssible” int “I’m pssible”.
    第二节(满分25分)

I knw we aren’t as clse as sme sisters, but that desn’t mean I’m nt missing yu a tn.”
Fr a lng time there was nthing but silence n the ther end f the line. Finally she spke. Her vice sunded as thugh it came frm nearby. “I’ve been sitting here, all alne, thinking abut yu guys back hme, t. Yur vice makes me feel as thugh I were right there with yu,” she said very quickly just as I did. “I miss yu, t. I’m cunting dwn the days befre I can g hme.”

    Text 10
If yu have studied and mastered a language t a high level, it’s a significant achievement that brings persnal satisfactin and new pprtunities. One f thse pprtunities might be the desire t live and wrk in the cuntry f that language. Hwever, reginal accents can increase sme difficulties, even fr cnfident language learners. Even within a small cuntry, accents can be varius. Fr example, when peple learn English, they tend t learn what is cmmnly referred t as the Queen’s English, Oxfrd English, BBC English, r Received Prnunciatin, namely RP. All f these are typical standard British accents. It was previusly believed that just 5% f the British ppulatin actually spke with an RP accent, but the mst recent studies suggest the true figure is even lwer — nly abut 3% f the ppulatin speaks in RP. S, there are arund 40 different accents within the United Kingdm alne. Smetimes, even native speakers may find it challenging t understand a particularly strng accent. In such situatins, a helpful apprach is t plitely request the speakers t repeat what they said, perhaps at a slwer pace.
