These inspired him t start a z at the Twer. Henry’s ‘wildcats’, althugh described as lepards, were prbably lins. These are the ancestrs f the three lins that still appear n the England ftball team’s shirts tday.
In 1252 the lins were jined by a white bear prbably a plar bear—given by the King f Nrway. In 1255, the King f France sent the first elephant ever seen in England and peple flcked tgether t see the nvel (新奇的) sight. Sadly, the elephant died tw years later.
Pr treatment and cramped cnditins meant many f the animals did nt survive fr lng. But the Menagerie cntinued t grw. Edward I created a permanent new hme fr the Menagerie at the western entrance t the Twer in what became knwn as the Lin Twer. The terrifying sunds and smells f wild animals must have bth impressed and scared visitrs.
By 1622, the cllectin had been extended t include three eagles, tw pumas, a tiger and a jackal, as well as lins and lepards, wh were the main attractins.
Hwever, the end f the Menagerie came in the 1830s. Campaigners had begun t raise cncerns, and the animals were expensive, ccasinally dangerus and a nuisance t the guardsmen. The Duke f Wellingtn sent 150 f the beasts t a new z in Regent’s Park, tday’s Lndn Z.
Despite Alfred Cps’s best effrts t carry n, several further incidents including an escaped wlf and a mnkey that bit a guardsman’s leg cnvinced King William IV t shut dwn the Menagerie fr gd in 1835. The remaining animals were sld t zs and travelling shws and the Lin Twer was later pulled dwn.

Yung trees dn’t just grw; they develp a persnality and learn mre abut their envirnment and hw they shuld best behave in it. They als help each ther ut whenever there’s truble.
Persnality, just as amng peple, varies amng trees. Sme are anxius, sme bld. On the authr’s land, there are three ak trees grwing clse tgether. One f the ak trees always starts t shed its leaves tw weeks earlier than the thers. Since they all experience the same temperature, the same sil and the same length f day, such variables can’t be the explanatin. S what’s happening? Well, this tree is simply mre careful than the thers. Whever hlds n t leaves lnger can d mre phtsynthesis (光合作用) and stre mre nutrients (营养物). Hwever, the lnger a tree keeps its leaves, the higher the risk f injury.
Nt nly d trees make their wn decisins; they als learn frm their mistakes. A tree, fr example, keeping its leaves t lng during ne year will never make this mistake again. This leads t several ther cnclusins: trees must ntice the temperature and length f the day and be able t save their experiences smewhere. Obviusly, trees dn’t have brains, but it is thught that in the sensitive tips f their rts they keep track f infrmatin and experiences.
But trees aren’t nly clever when it cmes t caring fr themselves. They als supprt each ther whenever there’s truble by giving warnings and even taking care f sick and weak cnspecifics with nutrients. Fr example, ne time the authr fund a very ld tree stump (树桩). Its insides had rtted a lng time ag t tpsil. But the wd n the utside f the stump was still living. Hw was this pssible? Well, the stump was nurished (滋养) by its neighbrs with nutrients frm the rt system, and had been fr at least 400 years!
Why d trees d such a thing? It’s simple: it’s better tgether. Trees need the frest; it prtects them frm strms, prvides the right micrclimate and warns them f attacks.
28. Why des the authr mentin the three ak trees?
A. T illustrate trees can learn frm experiences.
B. T shw trees can make independent decisins.
C. T explain trees are quite supprtive t each ther.
D. T prve trees have the same persnalities as humans.
29. Accrding t the text, which f the fllwing best describes the general features f trees?

AR glasses and virtual (虚拟的) reality headphnes haven’t yet been inside the mainstream, but tech cmpanies are jyfully saying that such equipment will eventually replace ur smartphnes. With 5G, that culd actually happen. This is ntable because cmpanies such as Apple are reprtedly develping AR glasses t imprve —r even replace— smartphnes.
