As he was grwing up, he used t run bareft daily n ht sand t schl, which was situated 20kilmeters frm his huse. He thinks this was gd training but knws it is nt pssible t ask children t d this tday. Hwever, he des feel that the early identificatin f talented athletes is als imprtant fr India's athletic teams t shine.
India has in the last few years judged success purely in terms f medals, but lking int the past reveals hw a mre generus generatin saluted Milkha as a pineer. Milkha is India’s finest track athlete f all time. He remains the nly Indian male t win an individual Cmmnwealth Games athletics gld—he wn the 400 meters at Cardiff in 1958, the first athlete frm independent India t d s.
Since retiring frm athletics, the frmer champin athlete has set up the Milkha Singh Charitable Trust, which helps prer families survive if an athlete in their family has died. A percentage f the prfits frm the film Bhaag Milkha Bhaag are ging t his trust.
Finally, let's read a qute frm Milkha himself: “There is n shrtcut t success.” A scene in the film shws Milkha Sing h running with injured feet—this actually happened. “I haven’t fund an alternative t hard wrk. Yu need t be patient, dedicated and true t yurself and yur wrk.”

Usain Blt burned abut 10kcal f energy t win his gld during the 200-metre sprint final at the Olympic Games, which culd rughly pwer an ld 60W light bulb fr 1 1 minutes. If yu culd make use f all the pwer generated by all the athletes during the Games, yu wuld still be nwhere clse t reaching the 29.5 billin Watts cnsumed verall by the athletes, spectatrs and rganizers ver the event. We take sprt fr granted, but d we ever cnsider its cst t the planet?
Frm the water required t maintain the glf curse during The Masters turnament t the hundreds f flights it takes t bring ftball fans t a Wrld Cup, majr sprts events are nt helping much in the fight against glbal heating. What's mre, there is a lack f recgnitin within sprt f its respnsibilities and little discussin abut pssible slutins.
This is strange given that the effect wrks bth ways: the climate crisis is nt just affected by sprts, but it is already having a negative impact n many sprts. When ice-climber Will Gadd set ut t cnquer the wrld's glaciers,
he didn't realize it wuld becme a race against climate change. “I thught glaciers are there frever.” When he arrived at the summit, Gad d was shcked: “The ice…wasn’t there. The things I planned t climb were gne.”
Glbal heating is nticeable in ther sprts. Amy Steel played prfessinal net ball until she suffered frm heatstrke after playing in 39°C cnditins and unfrtunately, the damage was permanent. Nt nly that, but extreme weather events made mre frequent as a result f glbal heating mean sprting events are mre ften delayed r cancelled. This has cst sprt billins in ptential earnings.
Yet sprt can be a pwerful mtivatr: it can unite whle natins behind its teams. Culd sprt have a rle t play in driving climate awareness? Will Gad d and Amy Steel are amng many athletes wh think s. One thing is certain. Sprt must put climate change at the tp f its agenda and decarbnize at a Usain Blt-like pace t make a difference.
    28. What is the main fcus f the first paragraph?
    A. The energy impact f sprts events. B. Blt's cntributin t the envirnment.
    C. The amunt f pwer generated by athletes. D. The reasn fr energy cnsumptin in sprts.
    29. Why des the writer use Will Gad d and Amy Steel as examples?
    A. They initiated climate-cnscius sprts. B. They sustained permanent injuries in sprts.
    C. They fell victim t climate-related incidents. D. They achieved recrd-breaking perfrmances.
    30. What effect f glbal heating n sprts is mentined in the text?
    A. Stricter facility restrictins. B. Substantial financial lsses.
    C. Higher athlete training standards. D. Prlnged utdr sprts seasns.
    31. What can be a suitable title fr the text?
    A. Sprts in the Climate Crisis B. Athletes against Glbal Heating
    C. The Olympian Energy Dilemma D. The Envirnmental Cst f Outdr Sprts
    D
Despite all the effrts students make t graduate with a science majr, research has shwn that mst cllege science curses prvide students with nly a fragmented (碎片化的 ) understanding f fundamental scientific cncepts. The teaching methd imprves memrizatin f separate facts, prceeding frm ne textbk chapter t the next withut necessarily making cnnectins between them, instead f learning hw t use the infrmatin and cnnect thse facts meaningfully.
With that in mind, we develped a series f crss-disciplinary(跨学科的) activities. In ur mst recent study, we investigated hw well cllege students culd use their chemistry knwledge t explain real-wrld bilgical phenmena. T begin with, we interviewed 28 first-year cllege students majring in sciences r engineering. All had taken bth intrductry chemistry and bi lgy curses. We asked them t identify the cntent f these curses and what they believed t be the take-hme messages frm each curse. The students respnded with extensive lists f tpics, cncepts, and skills that they'd learned in class.
Fllwing that, a set f crss-disciplinary activities were designed t guide students in the use f cre chemistry ideas and knwledge t help explain real-wrld bilgical phenmena. One activity explred the impacts f cean acidificatin n seashells. Here, the students were asked t use basic chemistry ideas t explain hw the increasing level f carbn dixide in sea water is affecting shell-building marine animals such as crals, clams and ysters.
Overall, the students felt cnfident f their chemistry knwledge. Hwever, they had a harder time applying the same chemistry knwledge t explaining the bilgical phenmena. These findings highlight that a big gap remains between what students learn in their science curses and hw well prepared they are t apply that infrmatin.
The students in ur study als reprted that these activities helped them see links between the tw disciplines that they wuldn't have perceived therwise. The ability t make these cnnectins is imprtant beynd the classrm as well, because it's the basis f science literacy(科学素养). S we als came away with evidence that ur chemistry students at least wuld like t have the ability t have a deeper understanding f science and hw t apply it.
    32. What des the existing science educatin fail t d accrding t the research?
    A. Extend students’ theretical knwledge.
    B. Engage students in mre utdr activities.
    C. Encurage students t enjy the learning prcess.
    D. Teach students t make cnnectins amng different subjects.
    33. What can we learn abut the student interviewees in the first step f study?
    A. They have rich academic knwledge. B. They pay little attentin t bilgy curses.
    C. They hardly identify the cre ideas f science. D. They fully understand their majr's imprtance.
    34. The activity abut cean acidificatin expects students t .
    A. analyse the exact cmpsitin f sea water
    B. study sme unusual phenmena under the sea
    C. cme up with practical methds t prtect sea life
    D. explain the effects f carbn dixide n sea creatures
    35. What des the authr see frm the result f the study accrding t the last paragraph?
    A. The need t remve the unfairness in educatin.
    B. The difficulties f fstering crss-disciplinary abilities.
    C. The ptential t prmte students’ science literacy.
    D. The methd f increasing students' practical skills.

Simple things like asking where smene's frm really can pen up a discussin and allw yu t find areas in cmmn. And if all else fails, yu can fall back n that mst British f tpics: the weather. 40
    A. It can be a nice start f a cnversatin.
    B. Instead, yu need t shw interest in them.
    C. There's ne incredibly simple tl: yur smile.
    D. S, can yu learn t develp superhuman charm?
