But what better way is there t g green? After giving it a secnd thught, we decided t put in an ffer and mved in n Thanksgiving Day.
When we first mved t the prperty, we did sme remdeling (改造) and stayed in ur mtr hme. We were cnfrnted with real challenges at the time. But the frustratins just made us wrk harder. We slwly gt things fixed and mved int the huse after 38 days.
While living here fr the past fur mnths has been a big adjustment, there are many benefits t living ff the grid (电线). I think ne f the mst educatinal lessns is teaching my kids the imprtance f cnservatin. They used t take water, pwer and gas fr granted. We started taking quicker shwers, ding nly full lads f laundry, turning ff the water while brushing ur teeth. Including a jke in the title f a paper culd pay ff in terms f citatins (引用), accrding t a study. The finding — which has nt been prved by peers — suggests that researchers culd gain citatins by giving their papers amusing titles while sme say the evidence is t weak t supprt the cnclusin.
Jkes smetimes find their way int academic papers. “One place where we ften see humr is in titles, but there’s a very small amunt f literature abut whether this is reasnable,” says lead authr Stephen Heard, an evlutinary eclgist.
T investigate whether having a funny title culd bst a paper’s readership and citatins Heard and his clleagues asked vlunteers t scre the titles f 2,439 papers accrding t hw amusing they were. The scrers assessed humr n a seven-pint scale, frm zer (serius titles) t six (extremely funny). The researchers then lked fr a link between papers’ humr scres and the number f citatins they had received, including self-citatins by their wn authrs.
Papers with funny titles were cited slightly less ften than thse with mre serius r straightfrward titles. Hwever, papers with mre amusing titles als tended t have fewer self-citatins, which led Heard’s team t infer that scientists might give funnier titles t less imprtant papers. “Our assumptin is that authrs dn’t cite their wn papers subsequently because they dn’t think that thse are their mst imprtant papers,” Heard says.
After cntrlling fr self-citatins as a measure f a paper’s imprtance, the researchers fund that articles with funny titles are in fact cited mre than thse with serius titles. Fr example, papers with titles that gt a scre f six had nearly twice as many citatins n average as thse whse titles gt a humr scre f fur. But sme researchers argued that self-citatins might nt be a gd criterin fr a paper’s imprtance.

A. a widely accepted belief.B. smething surprising.
C. a whlly resisted pinin.D. smething still in debate.

C. By matching the papers’ scres with the vlunteers’ likes.
D. By digitalizing the citatins int varius scres f humr.
10. Which f the fllwing statements will Heard mst prbably agree with?
A. Including a jke in an essay is by n means a gd attempt.
B. Self-citatins dn’t serve as a gd standard fr the research.
C. Articles with fewer self-citatins tend t be unimprtant t the authrs.
D. Scientists shuld stp their self-citatins t guarantee academic fairness.
11. Which f the fllwing is the best title f the passage?
A. One Cites Himself: A Rise T FameB. Funny Or Serius: It Serves Yur Chice

Expecting the wrst t avid feeling bad later is knwn as “bracing”. It may help them prepare fr emtinally challenging situatins, particularly in the mments befre these situatins ccur. Peple brace fr the wrst while waiting fr ptentially negative utcmes. Smene might als brace fr the wrst in anticipatin f stressful events like giving a presentatin at wrk.
Sme psychlgical theries suggest that bracing shuld help. Fr example “decisin affect thery” prpses that hw we feel abut a situatin is determined partly by cmparing what actually happened with what culd have happened. Based n this, peple shuld be happy when an event ges beynd their expectatins, and disappinted when an event falls behind. Therefre, by anticipating the wrst, ne can safeguard themselves against future disappintment, as any result is likely t surpass their expectatins.
But ther psychlgical theries undermine the idea that bracing will be helpful. It has been therized and scientifically established – that expectatins can pwerfully influence reality. There are tw key ways that expectatins can shape reality.
First, peple may behave in ways that fit with their expectatins. If yu expect t fail an upcming test r interview, then yu might nt invest effrts in preparatin, which in turn reduces yur chances f ding well. Secnd, peple may interpret a situatin in line with their expectatins. Imagine yu believe yu are insufficiently qualified fr a jb yu’ve applied fr. During the jb interview, yu’re likely t interpret blank expressins frm the interviewer in line with this belief, which culd negatively affect yur perfrmance. In fact, the interviewer did nt want t give anything away.
Drawing tgether the scientific studies, it seems that expecting the wrst is anything but a wise way t prepare fr upcming news r results. It might be better t hld psitive expectatins than t brace fr the wrst.
12. What is the secnd paragraph mainly abut?
A. The lgic f preparing fr the wrst.
B. The thery f cmparing past and future.
C. The cnflict between peple’s expectatin and reality.
D. The emtins hidden behind anticipating the wrst.
13. What des the underlined wrd “undermine” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Strengthen.B. Determine.C. Oppse.D. Justify.
14. Hw can negative expectatins prbably affect peple’s perfrmance in reality?
A. By resulting in unnecessary time waste.
B. By prmting peple’s ambitin and mtivatin.
C. By giving weight t peple’s ptential f excellence.
D. By causing less preparatin and sme misinterpretatins.
15. What is the authr’s attitude tward bracing fr the wrst?
A. Unclear.B. Objective.C. Negative.D. Apprving.
