I hate this. I am a retired letter carrier, and we mved mail the ld-fashined way: hand t hand, human t human. We were fast, friendly, and frequently accurate.
The wman in the frnt f the line was clicking away at the screen. And the clicks were surprisingly lud. Any signs f hesitatin n her part were telegraphed t the whle lbby. I felt srry fr her: The machine culd smell fear. The next persn tk a lng time, t. I breathed deeply. By the time it was my turn, I had the heart rate f a ygi(瑜伽修行者).
Under the weight f cncern frm the peple in line behind me, I felt a grwing bligatin t minimize the secnds between clicks. Finally it was time t slide in a credit card. The machine didn't take it. “Try putting it in the ther way,” the gentleman behind me suggested. N gd.
“I've gt a different card,” I said, and fished arund fr that ne, beginning t sweat. The machine wanted a PIN, but nt the ne I suggested.
“Start ver,”I clicked, intending t try the first card again.
Oh n. I had t start all ver again.

“Dn't give up,” said the nice man behind me.“ Try it again. We're all friends here, right?”
Smiles were blming(绽放)all dwn the line. I tried again, clicked with deliberatin and sincerity, and intrduced my credit card as thugh I were presenting it t the queen. Finally, I made it!

When was the last time yu went t yur lcal library? Last week? A mnth ag? A year ag?
Fr many reasns, brrwing bks frm libraries seems t be in decline. With advances in technlgy, it is nw pssible fr peple t dwnlad and read whatever they like n electrnic devices such as Kindles.

Persnally, I still lve libraries. They ffer a quiet space t sit, read, think, d research…a real escape frm the utside wrld. When I was at university, I frequently spent hurs at the schl library and brrwed numerus printed materials, as it was just t expensive t buy brand new bks every week t read fr seminars and lectures. Libraries are free!
Libraries ften rganize interesting activities as well. At hme, my lcal library hsted actrs, histrians and ther speakers during the twn's annual art and literature festival. Well-knwn authrs are als invited t libraries t give speeches r lead discussins abut their wrk. Events such as these are a great way t appeal t peple f all ages in the cmmunity and encurage the use f libraries.
Since mving abrad t wrk in Quebec fr a year, the imprtance f libraries has becme clear t me n an even mre persnal level. The schl I wrk in has an incredible library, which is prving invaluable when I want a gd bk t read but am feeling cnscius that everything I wuld want t read during the year is unlikely t fit in my suitcase by the time l g hme!
