Thugh diet and exercise are recmmended as ways t imprve health, new UCR research is the first t examine the lng-lasting, cmbined effects f bth factrs when they are experienced early in life. “Any time yu g t a dctr with cncerns abut yur weight, almst withut fail, the dctr recmmends that yu exercise and eat less, ”said researcher Marcell Cadney. “That’s why it’s surprising mst studies nly lk at diet r exercise separately. In this study, we wanted t include bth,” he said.
The researchers fund that early-life exercise led t reduced anxius behavirs and an increase in adult muscle and brain mass. When fed Western-style diets high in fat and sugar, the mice nt nly became fatter, but als grew int adults that preferred unhealthy fd.
T btain the findings, the researchers divided the yung mice int fur grups—thse with access t exercise, thse withut access, thse fed a standard, healthy diet and thse wh ate a Western diet. Mice started n their diets immediately after weaning(断奶), and cntinued with them fr three weeks until they reached adulthd. After an additinal eight weeks f “washut”, during which all mice were hused withut wheels and n a healthy diet, the researchers did a behaviral analysis and measured levels f several different hrmnes.
