In 1991, my dream life began t break. My marriage ended in divrce. It was all gne! And if that was nt enugh hardship, I had t listen t the hrrible wrds f my dctr, “Beverly, yu have breast cancer.” I was shcked and frzen in fear.

Replacing salt with a cmmn substitute (替代品) culd prevent thusands f strkes and heart attacks in Britain each year, a study suggests. Salt substitutes cntaining less sdium (钠) and added ptassium are already available in supermarkets and taste like nrmal salt. They had been linked t lwer bld pressure but the new research is the first t shw a clear link with reduced rates f heart attacks and strkes.
The study, published in the New England Jurnal f Medicine, suggests that the risk f strke was cut by as much as 14 per cent in adults with a histry f high bld pressure.
Strkes cause abut 34, 000 deaths in the UK each year and arc the biggest cause f severe disability. There are mre than 100, 000 hspital admissins each year due t heart attacks, r abut ne every five minutes, accrding t the British Heart Fundatin. This research marks ne f the largest “dietary interventin (干预)” studies ever cnducted.
Participants f the research in sme f the villages were prvided with the salt substitute, which cntained 70 per cent sdium chlride (氯化钠) and 30 per cent ptassium chlride, free f charge. Thse in the ther villages cntinued t use nrmal table salt, which is 100 percent sdium chlride. They were tracked fr an average f nearly five years each, and mre than 3, 000 had a strke. Fr thse using the salt substitute, researchers fund that the strke risk was reduced by 14 per cent.
Graham MacGregr, prfessr f cardivascular medicine at Barts and the Lndn Schl f Medicine, said: “This study clearly demnstrates that in the UK cnsumers shuld be encuraged nt t add salt t fd. If they have t, it’s vital that they use a reduced sdium with added ptassium sail.”
