I learned an imprtant lessn frm ne f my patients. When I first met Linda, she was nly six years ld, beautiful and energetic. She had an accident when she fell int the fire n a camping trip, leaving 30 percent f her skin surface damaged.

In his first year at Harvard, Manny Medran made a big breakthrugh. With the help f his prfessr Gary Urtn. Medran interpreted a set f six khipus, kntted cra (打结的绳子)used fr recrd keeping in the Inca Empire(印加帝国).
The Inca Empire reached the height f its pwer in 15th- and l6th-century Peru (秘鲁). When the Spanish arrived, the Inca had established the largest and mst cmplex sciety in the Americas, but they left behind n written recrds. The nly nes the Inca are knwn t have kept are in the frm f khipus. In 2002, Urtn began Harvard s Khipu Database Prject. I learned an imprtant lessn frm ne f my patients. When I first met Linda, she was nly six years ld, beautiful and energetic. She had an accident when she fell int the fire n a camping trip, leaving 30 percent f her skin surface damaged.

But, as we previusly reprted, micrbes (微生物) culd be hiding beneath the red planet's surface, kept warm by its cre and fed by radiatin frm rcks. A recent study shws that Mars might have experienced vlcanic explsins 50,000 years ag- practically last week in gelgic time (地质时期). Such activity raises the pssibility that, vlcanically, Mars “may still be active, even tday,” says David Hrvath, a scientist at the Planetary Science Institute in Tucsn, Arizna.
What's mre, NASA's InSight missin has picked up Marsquakes cming frm the area Hrvath studied. The quakes suggest there culd still be mlten magma (熔化的岩浆) belw the surface, warming the frzen undergrund and making liquid water pssible arund vlcanic htspts, Hrvath says. That culd create an undergrund haven fr life n Mars.
The team, based ut f the University f Arizna, lked at a single fissure (裂缝), ne f several fissures in the grund knwn cllectively as the Cerberus Fssae. They fund it surrunded by a dark regin which they think is ash (灰) frm a vlcanic eruptin. The fissures stretch acrss the Martian surface fr miles, althugh they're fairly shallw. The ne in questin is nly abut 20 meters deep. They fcused n this particular fissure because it stands ut. It’ s surrunded by visibly dark material which keeps heat well, Hrvath says.
If Mars was vlcanically active thugh, it's nt impssible that life culd be hanging ut in little undergrund islands arund the larger Martian vlcanes. If vlcanes n Mars are similar t thse n Earth, they culd have been active fr millins f years, says Erika Rader, a vlcanlgist at the University f Idah. But it's still a very extreme envirnment. By cntrast, ne deep undergrund fed by radiatin wuld prbably be mre stable, she says. In his first year at Harvard, Manny Medran made a big breakthrugh. With the help f his prfessr Gary Urtn. Medran interpreted a set f six khipus, kntted cra (打结的绳子)used fr recrd keeping in the Inca Empire(印加帝国).
The Inca Empire reached the height f its pwer in 15th- and l6th-century Peru (秘鲁). When the Spanish arrived, the Inca had established the largest and mst cmplex sciety in the Americas, but they left behind n written recrds. The nly nes the Inca are knwn t have kept are in the frm f khipus. In 2002, Urtn began Harvard s Khipu Database Prject. He traveled t museums arund the wrld t recrd the numbers f knts, lengths f crds, clrs f fibers, and ther details abut every Inca: khipu he culd find.
Urtn says he and ther researchers in the field have always had a general sense f what the khipus represented. Many had t d with census(人口普查) data. Others appeared t be calendar systems. But, until recently, nne f the khipus Urtn studied culd be understd n a very detailed level.
A turning pint came when Urtn began lking int a set f six khipus frm the 17th-centurySanta River Valley regin f Nrthwest Peru. One day, Urtn picked up a bk and happened t spt a Spanish census dcument frm the same regin and time perid. “A lt f the numbers that were recrded in that census recrd matched thse six khipus exactly, Urtn says. Then he culdn't help mentining it t his students. Medran, wh was amng these students, asked if he culd help during spring break.
