Dry lightning(雷电)can still be harmful even when cnditins aren’t s dry, said a study published in Gephysical Research Letters last mnth. Dry lightning during little t n rainfall was previusly thught t cause wildfire danger nly with less than 2.5mm f rain in a day. “The rainfall amunts we recrded shuld help prvide a better understanding f just hw much rain can cause a fire risk,” said Dmitri Kalashnikv, lead authr f the study.
The researchers analyzed(分析)cases n mre than 4,600 naturally caused fires frm 2015 t 2020. They matched 3,726 f thse t the lightning strikes that likely started them with the help f Natinal Lightning Detectin Netwrk.
The study fund that 15.3% f thse were hldver fires which burn withut smke, bringing abut ver a hundred fires each year. Analyzing the rainfall amunts arund the time f the lightning strikes shwed greater rainfall than previusly thught amng the earlier fund fires ranging frm 1.7 mm t 4.6 mm.
